#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook where you chose five books from your to-be-read pile that fit that week’s theme. If you’d like more info, head over to the announcement post!
Hello, reader!
It’s once again Monday and, can I just say, I’m super excited about this week’s 5 On My TBR theme! Why is that? Because this week, we’re focusing on one of my favorite topics: animals! There are a lot of ways you can take this theme. Are we looking for animals on the cover? Animal companions? Animals as main characters? I’m going with any and all of these apply! My list of five is a mix of a few interpretations, but they are all books I can’t wait to read.
#1. A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan
This is one of those books that I put on my TBR forever ago and kind of forgot about. But it’s also one that sounds incredibly interesting! It’s about a woman who wants to be a dragon naturalist which, come on, how can you not want to read that? Women scientists and dragons all in one book! Also, I absolutely love the cover 😍 One day I will pick this one up, perhaps sooner than later now that I’ve been reminded how much I want to read it, lol.
Oh and it clearly fits the theme since it’s centered around dragons!
#2. Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin
While this book doesn’t feature an animal, per se, it certainly has one in the title! The main character also has wolf tattoos according to the synopsis, so I think that counts 😂 She’s also a skinshifter who is entering a race so she can try and kill Hitler which sounds incredible! I’ve been interested in this book for awhile. I’ve also been hearing a lot about it, lately, which makes me even more excited to pick it up! Perhaps it’ll be one of my first reads in 2021?
#3. Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James
Here we have another book I chose because of there were animals in the name. There is, however, also a shapeshifter named Leopard, so I can only assume that they can turn into their namesake. It works both ways!
I’ve been curious about this book since it came out, but it often gets pushed to the backburner for other, shorter books 😅 I’ve also heard it’s pretty intense so I may be a bit nervous to pick this one up. I still think it sounds fascinating and I’m always intrigued by books that are inspired by African mythology and history. I hope to read this one soon!
#4. The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding by Alexandra Bracken
Here’s an example of a book that isn’t necessarily centered around animals, but it has an animal on the cover! I don’t know a ton about this book, but I do know there is a malicious demon living inside the main character. Perhaps this demon looks like the white animal on the cover? Who knows! I would love to find out, however.
This book sounds like it would be a dark, but fun middle grade. It has a wisecracking demon, after all. I’ve heard nothing but great things about it, as well! Hopefully I’ll be reading this one sooner rather than later.
#5. The Tea Dragon Festival by Katie O’Neill
I couldn’t have a list of books with animals and not include the second graphic novel in the Tea Dragon Society series! The little tea dragons are too cute for all that. I read The Tea Dragon Society last year when I was exploring the graphic novel selection at my local library. I instantly fell in love with the world and the little, baby tea dragons contained within. I want, like, fifty of them. The art in this series is absolutely adorable, too, with tons of vibrant colors, and the characters make you want to protect them at all cost. I can’t wait to continue on with the series!
What are some books the have animals in them on your TBR that you can’t wait to read? Have you read any of the books on mine? Let me know in the comments!
And, as always, happy reading!
Omg I can’t believe I forgot about Black Leopard, Red Wolf and Natural History of Dragons! Both of those are on my TBR as well, and although BL,RW has major intimidating vibes (lol), I’m keen to pick both up! I loved The Tea Dragon Festival 🥰 The GN’s by O’Neill are always so, so adorable!

I want to read all O’Neill’s graphic novels eventually! I love her art style, it’s so stinkin’ cute. And I am equally intimidated by BL,RW 😅
