5 on my tbr

#5OnMyTBR – Mythology

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook where you chose five books from your to-be-read pile that fit that week’s theme. If you’d like more info, head over to the announcement post!

Hello, reader!

We’ve arrived at another 5 On My TBR Monday and I’m super excited about this one! Why? Because this week’s theme is mythology! I love mythology from all different cultures and I especially love mythological retellings. They are some of my favorite stories, so you can imagine that there are quite a few on my TBR. It was difficult picking just five to highlight today, but I’ve chosen the five that I’m the most eager to pick up. They are all retellings of or inspired by mythology from a variety of cultures and I can’t wait to read them!

#1. Star Daughter by Shevta Thakrar

I’ve been wanting to read this YA fantasy inspired by Hindu mythology for quite some time. I have to be honest that the cover drew me in first. I mean… just look at it! But the concept sounds like it would make for such a great story. A young woman who is part human, part star, has to appeal to her celestial mother to save her human father. I want to see how that unfolds!

#2. Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James

I’ve had this adult fantasy on my TBR for quite some time. Since it was first announced, in fact! It is inspired by African mythology and sounds incredibly intriguing. There is a hunter who is contracted to track down a mysterious boy and finds himself entangled with a strange group along the way. I’ve heard it’s rather dark and to definitely check trigger warnings before going in. I’m looking forward to checking it out for myself.

#3. The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty

This Middle Eastern-inspired YA fantasy with the beautiful cover has been calling to me for some time now. It has quite the following in the YA community, too, which makes me even more anxious to pick it up. I’m a sucker for the hype train, y’all. Besides, it features djinn and a con artist… how can I resist? And the series is complete so, if I love it, I don’t have to wait to continue!

#4. The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

We’ve got another YA fantasy, but this book draws heavily on Russian mythology. I’ve always been intrigued by Russian myths and folktales, but I’ve read very few books inspired by them! I’ve wanted to read the beginning to the Winternight Trilogy for ages. I even have the book chilling on my bookshelf! This is going to be the year that I finally dig myself into this wintery fairytale.

#5. The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

Y’all know Madeline Miller has to be on this list. I loved her other book based on a well known Greek myth, Circe, and I’ve heard that this one blows it out of the water. I’ve always been intrigued by the story of Achilles and I love Miller’s writing, so this was a no-brainer to add to the list! I’ve also heard this book will make you cry and I’m always up for having my emotions destroyed over fictional characters.

What are some mythology books on your TBR that you can’t wait to read? Have you read any of the books on mine? Let me know in the comments!

And, as always, happy reading!

  1. Great list! I totally forgot about BLRW although that book intimidates the heck out of me especially after reading so many reviews for it. I’m still not sure whether it’s gonna be a book for me but I’m keen to try. I also had Star Daughter on my list 😃 Hope you enjoy all these books!

  2. I’ve read The Bear and the Nightingale and The City of Brass and strongly recommend them both. I still need to read the last in the series for both of those.
I really want to get to the Star Daughter, I also love the cover and I haven’t read much inspired by Hindu mythology.

  3. Black Leopard Red Wolf on my TBR but don’t know when I’ll get to it since I’ve heard such mixed things. On my TBR is Half God of Rainfall, a play by Inua Ellams
