The Outstanding Blogger Award

Hello, reader!

Today on the blog, I’m playing tag catch-up once again. This time, I’ll be doing the Outstanding Blogger Award! I was lucky enough to be tagged by two incredible bloggers, Danni @ _ForBooksSake and Kat @ KB Book Reviews. They both have wonderful blogs and talk about a wide range of books! If you’re looking for new bookish people to follow, you can’t go wrong with Danni and Kat 💕 I’m excited to see what questions they have for me.

That being said, let’s jump in!

The Rules:

  • Have the link to the creator’s original award post
  • Answer the questions provided
  • Create 7 unique questions
  • Nominate 10 other bloggers. Neither the award’s creator nor the blogger that nominated you can be nominated

Danni’s Questions:

#1. What was your favourite read of 2020?

If you’ve been around my blog for any amount of time, you’ve probably heard me gush about Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko. It’s one of the few books that I’ve re-read and that was in the first year it was released. That’s how much I loved it! It’s a beautifully vibrant YA fantasy that follows an incredible character named Tarisai. I fell in love with the story, the world, and especially the characters. The found family vibes are immaculate and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series! Which may or may not be popping up later in this post, who knows *winkwink*

#2. What are you hoping to achieve in 2021?

I think the main thing I want to focus on in 2021 is finding a good life-work-blogging balance. I’m the type of person that throws her all into something, but that is usually at the determent of all the other aspects of my life 😅 So I’m trying to be better at not hyper-focusing on just one thing and making sure I put effort into all aspects of my life, not just one. I think I’m getting there! Slowly, but surely, y’all.

#3. What is your most anticipated release of 2021?

Oh, hey, look who it is! Redemptor is the sequel to the book I was gushing about in the first question. I was just approved for an e-ARC on Netgalley and I was practically vibrating! It took all my willpower to not drop every book I’m reading right now to immediately pick this one up. I need to know what is going to happen to Tarisai, how she’s going to move on from the events at the end of Raybearer, and I need to know how it’s all going to wrap up! I’m both stoked and sad that this is a duology, lol. Don’t be surprised if this one sneaks it’s way onto my April TBR. Though maybe I’ll do another re-read of Raybearer first… hmmm…

#4. Are there any books that you are desperate to read this year?

Oh, there are so many! Um… five off of the top of my head are:

  1. Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas
  2. Witches Steeped in Gold by Ciannon Smart
  3. Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
  4. A Psalm of Storms and Silence by Roseanne A. Brown
  5. Little Thieves by Margaret Owen

#5. Other than reading/writing/blogging, do you have any hobbies?

I love gaming! Board games, video games, games on my phone… I love to play games of all kinds. My husband and I play D&D regularly, as well. Well… as regularly as we can get all of our group online, lol. Though I love playing video games, I’m terrible at actually finishing games. Looking at you, Skyrim playthrough. I also like to go for walks when it’s not bitterly cold outside, which is why I’m so excited that it’s finally Spring!

#6. Tell us 3 interesting facts about yourself.

  1. I can make a clover shape with my tongue 👅
  2. I’ve been in choirs (church or school) since I was in 2nd grade 🎶
  3. I used to be a Girl Scout but I quit because the one time we went camping, I was mad that we stayed in a lodge instead of using tents 😂

#7. Where in the world would you most like to visit?

We’re gonna have to do another first five I think of because I want to travel to so many places!

  1. Australia (I really want to see Uluru!)
  2. Scotland (specifically Edinburgh)
  3. Germany (I lived there for about four years when I was young and I want to go back as an adult)
  4. Spain (I just think it looks gorgeous)
  5. New Zealand (HOBBITON!)

Kat’s Questions:

#1. What is your most anticipated release this year?

Since I’ve already talked about my most anticipated book of 2021, I’m going to go with another 2021 release that I can’t wait to read. Little Women is one of the few classics that I actually enjoyed, so I’m excited to pick up So Many Beginnings by Bethany C. Morrow, which is a Little Women remix. The cover is gorgeous, it features young Black girls, and I need to have it in my grubby hands! Unfortunately, I have to wait til September… but that is my birth month, so it’ll be like a present just for me, lol.

#2. What is the prettiest book you own, and did the story live up to the cover?

2020 was the year that I started receiving a couple of subscription boxes. That means that my amount of pretty books has certainly skyrocketed! One of the prettiest that I’ve received, though, is the Owlcrate edition of These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong. I mean… look at it! The cover itself is gorgeous, but that naked hardback is just 😍 It’s even prettier in person! I’m not one that typically likes to take the dust jackets off my books but, for this one, I might make an exception.

#3. What was your favourite inclusive/diverse read from 2020 (or from this year so far)?

This is the perfect time to sneak Legendborn by Tracy Deonn on this list! This was a beautifully written King Arthur remix featuring a young Black woman who is going Through It™. I loved watching Bree on her journey has she deals with the grief of losing her mother and the stress of dealing with everything that is the Order of the Round Table. It’s filled with fantastic characters and the action is incredible! Definitely one of my faves from 2020.

#4. Do you prefer standalones or series?

Ooo, this is a tough one. I suppose it depends on how much I connect with the characters and the story. Some stories are perfect as standalones. But there are some stories where I just want to stay in the world for longer than one book can contain! I think, if I had to choose, I would probably go with series because I love being able to linger with characters and watching them develop and grow. And sometimes I just don’t want to let the world go!

#5. If you could have any fictional character’s entire wardrobe, whose would it be?

Oh, wow, this is a great question! I don’t tend to pay much attention to character’s clothing, if I’m being honest. I would want to go with something comfortable because ya girl likes to feel cozy. That being said, I would probably pick Rue’s wardrobe from Wings of Ebony by J. Elle. She’s constantly wearing a hoodie and that is legit how I survive winters in New England. Hoodies all day, every day 😂

#6. Which mystical/fantasy creature would you want as a companion?

A DRAGON! But… like a little dragon that can chill on my shoulder and hiss at strangers that stand too close to me. Bonus points if it breathes fire! We could roast marshmallows together, omg. *spirals off into her imaginary world with her imaginary dragon*

#7. What are you passionate about, outside of reading?

My job. I absolutely love working in the lab and I love working in microbiology! Do I have days where I’m tired and feel like I’ve been run into the ground? Oh yes. But if I think about other things I could do, my mind always comes back to the lab. Microbiology is fascinating, I get to wear scrubs to work, and I even get a sweet, mad scientist lab coat! It’s the perfect place for me and I’m so glad I found it.

My Questions:

  1. What is your favorite part of being a blogger?
  2. Do you have any pets? And can we see pictures?
  3. What’s a genre you would like to explore more?
  4. Do you have a favorite book from your childhood that you still re-read?
  5. What’s the best book you’ve read so far in 2021?
  6. What’s your favorite ice cream flavor? Or favorite dessert if you’re not a fan of ice cream?
  7. Name your top five books from your favorite genre!
