The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Crazy-For-Books and is currently being hosted by Coffee Addicted Writer. Every Friday, a new question is posted for book bloggers to answer in the coming week. The purpose of the hop is connection and community. You can discover new blogs to follow, new books to read, and you may end up with some new followers, as well!
This Week’s Question
Do you have a genre you haven’t read before but would like to?
Submitted by Sam @ Another Book on the Shelf.
Something I like about myself as a reader is that I read a little bit of everything. Though I’m mainly a SFF woman, I’ll still read horror, romance, contemporary… you name it! But there is one genre that I really don’t ever go near… poetry.
I don’t know if it’s an intimidation thing or me thinking I just won’t “get it”, but I have never picked up a poetry collection just to read it. I’ve read a few books in verse that I adored, which makes me think that, perhaps, I wouldn’t hate poetry as much as I think I would.
Honestly, I think school killed whatever love I may have ever had for the genre. I feel like poetry is going to mean different things to different people. When I was in high school, though, it was driven into my head that a poem meant This One Thing and if I didn’t interpret it that way, then I was Wrong. And my overachieving ass did not appreciate that. So I just didn’t bother reading poetry because it made me feel dumb. Which, looking back, is so silly and probably caused me to miss out on a lot of great reads.
Now, I would love to give the genre another try, free from the confines of high school/college. My issue now is… I have no idea where to start 😅 I’m considering picking up a few of the finalists from the Goodreads Choice Award. I know that thing is just a popularity contest, but perhaps it would be a good jumping off point.
I would also love any recommendations you might have, readers! If there any poetry collections that you love, let me know in the comments!
OOOOF. I know exactly what you mean. I majored in Creative Writing in college, and the poetry classes STRESSED ME OUT. I think that stress contributed to my hesitation on picking up poetry collections as well. 😂
I did read a poetry collection last year that I liked: Obit by Victoria Chang. That one deals with grief because the author lost both her parents, and she’s navigating her grief through poems. That collection was really sad; it’s like I underwent the five stages of grief alongside the author.

Exactly! It really sucked the fun out of poetry for me. That poetry collection sounds sad but really good! I’ll have to check it out 😊

[…] out my list is a genre that I rarely, if ever, pick up: poetry I talked about this in a recent Book Blogger Hop, but poetry is definitely on the low end of genres I willingly choose to read. But I honestly think […]
