Book Blogger Hop: Mar 25- 31

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Crazy-For-Books and is currently being hosted by Coffee Addicted Writer. Every Friday, a new question is posted for book bloggers to answer in the coming week. The purpose of the hop is connection and community. You can discover new blogs to follow, new books to read, and you may end up with some new followers, as well!

This Week’s Question

Do you have a threshold on books where you will offer the author feedback but won’t review?

Submitted by Heather @ MM Romance Reviewed.

I actually have a couple of different answers for this question. It mostly hinges on how I received the book I’m planning to review. For example, if I got the book from Netgalley, I always feel obligated to post a review, whether I liked the book or not. Usually, I try to keep reviews on the blog positive, so if I rate a book less than three stars, I simply post the review to Netgalley and move on. I might also post a review on Goodreads or book selling sites depending on whether I found the content problematic or not. Unproblematic but not my cup of tea? I’ll keep it to just Netgalley. Problematic af? That review is going everywhere I can get it.

Now, what about if I received the book from an author/publisher for review? If that’s the case and I was rating below three stars, I would contact whomever (author or publisher) to see how they would like me to proceed. I would never presume to give feedback unless the author explicitly asks for it! If they are okay with me posting a less than stellar review, I would probably keep it to Goodreads and, if they really wanted, a blog post. Again, I try to keep negative reviews off my blog because just because I didn’t enjoy a book doesn’t mean someone else couldn’t love it. If the author or publisher prefers no review, I would respect that.

The last circumstance is if I purchased the book myself. If I end up not liking it, I’ll probably still write a review for Goodreads, but not post it to my blog. I try to review as many books as I can on Goodreads (though I am vastly behind 😅) even the ones I didn’t particularly like. If it’s so terrible that I just have no words, then I’ll just give it one star and go, haha.

Basically, I try to keep the reviews on my blog positive. So, if I rate something two stars or less, then I keep the review to Goodreads. And the only way I would offer feedback is if specifically asked by the author.
