What are your favorite characteristics of a main character?

Oooo, this is a really great question! I had to have a think to really pinpoint down what makes me love a character.

Thinking of some of my favorite main characters, one thing that jumps out to me is that they tend to be bookish. It’s probably because I find it easy to connect to characters that have something in common with me. Take, for example, Zachary Ezra Rawlins from The Starless Sea. I immediately connected to his character because he reminded me so much of myself when I was in college. That was in no small part due to his love of books (and video games, too). So if you give me a MC that loves reading, we’re already off to a good start.

Something else I find I enjoy in my main characters is a willingness to adapt and learn. Characters who are open to realizing they don’t know everything and are willing to learn from others always find a way into my heart. Probably because I strongly dislike close-minded people in real life, so why would I want to read about a main character who exhibits that attribute? I also just really love following a character’s journey when they are learning a new skill or adapting to a new situation. I find that so interesting and it helps to explore who they are, as well.

I also love reading about main characters that come from diverse backgrounds! Especially since that’s not something that I got to enjoy a lot when I was growing up. Now that we’re getting more and more diverse books, I want to consume them all so that they keep coming! I’ve found some of my favorite characters when reading diverse books and I love that for me.
