Sundays In Bed With… The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow

Sundays in Bed With… is a meme that dares to ask you what book has been in your bed this morning and is hosted by Midnight Book Girl. Come share what book you’ve spent time curled up reading in bed with, or which book you wish you had time to read today!

Hello, reader!

I hope you’re all having a wonderful Sunday. I’ve finally roused myself from bed after a whirlwind Saturday helping my best friend get married! It was a great day and now I’m ready to just relax and catch up on some reading, haha. The book I’m snuggling up with today is one that I’m buddy reading with some bookish friends and am woefully behind on. Hopefully I can remedy that today!

But, first, let me tell you more about it.

My Sunday Read Is…

The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow

What an incredible story this has been so far! I think it’s been confirmed that I love Alix E. Harrow’s writing because I was immediately pulled into this story. I love the descriptions and the parallels drawn between these three, witchy sisters through the beautiful writing. And, speaking of the sisters, the sibling dynamics in this book are incredible! If you’re a fan of stories that explore the ideas of family and shared trauma, this is definitely one I would suggest reading. And the fact that, mixed in with all this, we have true magic and suffragettes makes it that much better.

Sundays In Bed With… Babel by R.F. Kuang

Sundays in Bed With… is a meme that dares to ask you what book has been in your bed this morning and is hosted by Midnight Book Girl. Come share what book you’ve spent time curled up reading in bed with, or which book you wish you had time to read today!

Hello, reader!

I hope you’re having a relaxing Sunday, wherever you are. I had to work, but now I’m off for a week because my best friend is getting MARRIED! I’m so excited for her and will be spending the week making sure everything goes as swimmingly as it can. And getting prepared to be fancy for a day, haha. For tonight, though, I’m spending the night reading because I’m in the middle of a book that I can already feel is going to be a five star read and I don’t want to stop 😆

So let me quickly tell you more about it so I can get back to reading!

My Sunday Read Is…

Babel by R.F. Kuang

Y’all. THIS BOOK.

I went into this knowing that I’m a fan of R.F. Kuang’s writing. I also knew that she is an author that does not pull punches and that is definitely true of her newest novel. Is it as horrific as The Poppy War? So far, no… but she does not shy away from depicting the horrible affects of racism and colonialism. I’m completely wrapped up in this novel and have a feeling this might be one of my favorite reads of 2022. The academia vibes are spot on, the characters have my whole heart, and I am invested in the plot that is unraveling. If you like dark academia even a little bit, you need to check this one out!

Sundays In Bed With… Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Sundays in Bed With… is a meme that dares to ask you what book has been in your bed this morning and is hosted by Midnight Book Girl. Come share what book you’ve spent time curled up reading in bed with, or which book you wish you had time to read today!

Hello, reader!

My head cold has finally left the roost and I can breathe again! There’s still some lingering snot, but I can finally think again. That means that reading is back on the table! I have quite a few books leftover from my September reads that I would love to finish up because I was really enjoying them. One of those books happens to be the book I’m planning on curling up with this evening.

I’m sure most people have already read this book, but let me tell y’all more about it!

My Sunday Read Is…

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Starting this book made me realize that I need to read more mixed media books because I always love them! It’s just so visually stimulating and fun. I’m also loving the relationship between Kady and Ezra. Both of their personalities really shine through in all these snippets of chats and case files. I find it incredible that the tension and plot can shine through just as well when we’re not even getting full paragraphs. I’m definitely hooked and I can’t wait to read more now that my brain can finally process things again!

Sundays In Bed With… The Midnight Guardians by Ross Montgomery

Sundays in Bed With… is a meme that dares to ask you what book has been in your bed this morning and is hosted by Midnight Book Girl. Come share what book you’ve spent time curled up reading in bed with, or which book you wish you had time to read today!

Hello, reader!

I hope you’re having a wonderful Sunday. I’ve spent the weekend celebrating my best friend at her bachelorette party, which consisted of chilling at a hotel pool and getting drunk 😂 It was great times! Now, however, I’m ready to relax and recharge before the impending work week. That means it’s time to curl up with one of my current reads!

My Sunday Read Is…

The Midnight Guardians by Ross Montgomery

This is such a cute middle grade fantasy! There is a lot going on in this book. There’s a Spirit World, imaginary friends that come to life, and a frightening bad guy that gives me the chills. And it’s all set on the backdrop of WWII, so there are definitely some intense moments. Still, it’s wonderful watching Col fight for his sister and his friends as he goes on this adventure. I love the Guardians and can’t wait to continue this story!

Sundays In Bed With… Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card

Sundays in Bed With… is a meme that dares to ask you what book has been in your bed this morning and is hosted by Midnight Book Girl. Come share what book you’ve spent time curled up reading in bed with, or which book you wish you had time to read today!

Hello, reader!

Happy Sunday and I hope you’re having a relaxing one! The family and I are about to head out to go apple picking for my birthday because I grew up in the Midwest and apple picking is one of my favorite fall activities! There’s also the promise of delicious apple cider donuts, so I’m excited 🤤 Once we get back, though, I plan to spend the rest of the day curled up with a book!

The book I’ll be reading today is a classic that I somehow managed to get through all of my school career without reading. I’ve already started it and, I have to say, I’m having a great time! Now it’s time to tell you more about it.

My Sunday Read Is…

Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card

First of all, can I just say I had no idea that this was the start to a series? I always thought this book was a standalone! That makes me a little nervous because now I know all this tension and angst won’t be wrapped up at the end of this novel. At least I’m enjoying all the drama in the meantime, though, haha. This book is, first and foremost, a character study and I am absolutely loving it. Ender is such a fascinating character and what he’s being put through is awful. Maybe it’s because I used to be in the military, but I am not at all surprised by the tactics these officers are using to make him “the best of the best”. I’m eager to watch it blow up in their faces. (Please let it blow up in their faces…)

Sundays In Bed With… Stillhouse Lake by Rachel Caine

Sundays in Bed With… is a meme that dares to ask you what book has been in your bed this morning and is hosted by Midnight Book Girl. Come share what book you’ve spent time curled up reading in bed with, or which book you wish you had time to read today!

Hello, reader!

I hope everyone is having a nice Sunday. It’s my last day of my long weekend and I’m using it to be as much of a slacker as possible 😂 I’ve been hanging out downstairs, watching my daughter play Red Dead Redemption 2, and poking around on the internet. I’ve also been washing my hair which, as a Black woman, is a Whole Thing. Whilst getting my curls in check, I decided to pick up my first audiobook of the month.

So now let me tell you more about it!

My Sunday Read Is…

Stillhouse Lake by Rachel Caine

I’ve wanted to start this thriller series by Rachel Caine for some time now. I love one of her fantasy series, The Great Library, and I’ve always been curious whether or not I would like her other work. Seeming as thrillers are probably my second favorite genre, this seemed like a good choice! I found the audiobook on Scribd and now I’m digging in. This story focuses around a woman who discovers that her husband was a serial killer. Four years later, she and her kids have new names and are trying to build a new life. So far, it’s been intense and I’m really enjoying it!

Sundays In Bed With… Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

Sundays in Bed With… is a meme that dares to ask you what book has been in your bed this morning and is hosted by Midnight Book Girl. Come share what book you’ve spent time curled up reading in bed with, or which book you wish you had time to read today!

Hello, reader!

I hope you had a nice, relaxing Sunday. I have been all over the place, what with work and picking my kiddo up after her summer holiday, that this is the first moment I’ve been able to chill. So, once I’m done with this post and have stuffed my face with food, I’m ready for some quality reading time.

Today, I’m spending my reading time with a classic that I’ve been meaning to read for awhile. So let’s jump into the post so I can tell you more about it!

My Sunday Read Is…

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

Look. I don’t know what I was expecting when I picked this book up. But I was not expecting it to be this intense. Which I suppose doesn’t make sense because it’s a book about the normalized practice of burning books. I dunno… I guess I wasn’t expecting it to dig so deep into the why, but I’m loving that it is! Also, I’m listening to the audiobook, which is narrated by Tim Robbins, and he is doing a fantastic job. He’s definitely got my heart pumping quite a few times. I’ll probably have this done tomorrow and I’m looking forward to seeing how this wraps up!

Sundays In Bed With… The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart

Sundays in Bed With… is a meme that dares to ask you what book has been in your bed this morning and is hosted by Midnight Book Girl. Come share what book you’ve spent time curled up reading in bed with, or which book you wish you had time to read today!

Hello, reader!

This is the first Sunday in a minute that I didn’t have to work and it has been glorious! Mostly because I slept for a good portion of the day, haha. Apparently, my body needed to catch up on some rest. Now that I’m feeling more restful, I’m definitely in the reading mood. I’ve picked a book from my various monthly TBRs that I’ve been wanting to read for awhile now. It’s been so hyped and I’m eager to see if I jump on the train, as well.

That being said, let me tell you more about it!

My Sunday Read Is…

The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart

I’m reading this book for the Magical Readathon because it has an animal companion. Thankfully, it’s also a book I’ve been wanting to read for a long time! I’m only a few chapters in, but I’m already falling in love with the world that Andrea Stewart is creating. I’m already rooting for both Lin, the daughter of the Emperor, and Jovis, a smuggler on a quest. And I’m definitely curious about the Tithing Festival and what sounds like a horrible tradition. In just a few short chapters, this book has sucked me in and I’m excited to continue!

Goodreads Synopsis

Magic. Revolution. Identity.

The Emperor’s reign has lasted for decades, his mastery of bone shard magic powering the animal-like constructs that maintain law and order. But now his rule is failing, and revolution is sweeping across the Empire’s many islands.

Lin is the Emperor’s daughter and she spends her days trapped in a palace of locked doors and dark secrets. When her father refuses to recognise her as heir to the throne, she vows to prove her worth by mastering the forbidden art of bone shard magic.

Yet such power carries a great cost, and when the revolution reaches the gates of the palace, Lin must decide how far she is willing to go to claim her birthright – and save her people.

The Bone Shard Daughter is an unmissable fantasy debut – a captivating tale of magic, revolution and mystery, where a young woman’s sense of identity will make or break an empire.

Sundays In Bed With… Fledgling by Octavia E. Butler

Sundays in Bed With… is a meme that dares to ask you what book has been in your bed this morning and is hosted by Midnight Book Girl. Come share what book you’ve spent time curled up reading in bed with, or which book you wish you had time to read today!

Hello, reader!

I hope you’ve had a restful Sunday, so far! I’m epically tired because I stayed up ridiculously late playing D&D and then had to wake up this morning to go to work. Very bad combo. Would not recommend. Now that I’m home, though, I’m happy to curl up in my bed and read.

That being said, let me tell you a little about my Sunday read!

My Sunday Read Is…

Fledgling by Octavia E. Butler

This is Octavia E. Butler’s take on the classic vampire story with bits of sci-fi dropped in. I’m… enjoying it? I guess? I’m listening to the audiobook and, while I’m listening, I’m having a good time. But I’m never eager to pick it back up 😅 I don’t know, I think it’s because this book is quite happy to meander as it goes and, even though exciting things are happening, I feel so bored reading them. Part of that is the narrator. Her voice is the kind that makes me want to take a nap which is not helpful when I’m trying to pay attention! I like the unique vampire lore in this, but, so far, I’m feeling pretty ‘meh’ about this one. Perhaps that’s just my generally ‘meh’ feelings about vampires popping up.

Sundays In Bed With… Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Sundays in Bed With… is a meme that dares to ask you what book has been in your bed this morning and is hosted by Midnight Book Girl. Come share what book you’ve spent time curled up reading in bed with, or which book you wish you had time to read today!

Hello, reader!

Happy Sunday! I hope you’ve been having a relaxing day, so far. I’ve been doing a lot of chilling and a lot of reading this lovely day. Partly because it’s a billion degrees outside and, even though I love hot weather, I don’t feel like melting today. And partly because I’ve been quite engrossed in my current read.

So let’s jump into the post so I can tell you more about it!

My Sunday Read Is…

Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid

I kept saying that this book has utterly surprised me and I feel like I need to qualify that statement. It’s not like I went into this book expecting it to be bad. Quite the opposite. I’ve enjoyed two other books by TJR, so I know I enjoy her writing. It’s the fact that I’ve come to care so much about a quartet of famous people and all their problems. Which, thinking about it now, I should have known better. The books I’ve read by TJR both feature famous people and I came to care about those characters, as well! I suppose I don’t like books about celebrities… unless they’re written by Taylor Jenkins Reid 😂

Goodreads Synopsis

Four famous siblings throw an epic party to celebrate the end of the summer. But over the course of twenty-four hours, their lives will change forever.

Malibu: August, 1983. It’s the day of Nina Riva’s annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their adored baby sister, Kit. Together, the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over—especially as the offspring of the legendary singer, Mick Riva.

The only person not looking forward to the party of the year is Nina herself, who never wanted to be the center of attention, and who has also just been very publicly abandoned by her pro tennis player husband. Oh, and maybe Hud—because it is long past time to confess something to the brother from whom he’s been inseparable since birth.

Jay, on the other hand, is counting the minutes until nightfall, when the girl he can’t stop thinking about promised she’ll be there.

And Kit has a couple secrets of her own—including a guest she invited without consulting anyone.

By midnight the party will be completely out of control. By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames. But before that first spark in the early hours before dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play, and the loves and secrets that shaped this family’s generations will all come bubbling to the surface.

Malibu Rising is a story about one unforgettable night in the life of a family: the night they each have to choose what they will keep from the people who made them… and what they will leave behind.
