Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

That’s right, y’all. I’m finally giving this much talked about romance a read. I literally just started it last night, so I can’t really say how I’m feeling just yet. So far, I’m liking Alex, so that’s good! I can’t get behind a romance when I don’t like one (or both) of the MCs. I’m looking forward to getting more into this!

Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco

I’m participating in Netgalley November with a bunch of bookish friends and this was one of the first ones I picked up. I was excited to pick this up because it sounded like a different take on a vampire story. I was prepared for paranormal hijinks. I was not prepared for a vampire-half vampire-vampire hunter throuple but I ain’t mad about it! This book is dark and steamy and thrilling in the best ways so far. I’m loving the rep, the action, and the ✨drama✨

The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow

I know I talked about this book recently but I am still reading it. Because I overcommitted to buddy reads this month. Because all the books sounded SO GOOD! So far, I haven’t been disappointed, and that definitely holds true for this book. I’m loving the sisterly dynamics, the look into the suffragist struggle, and, of course, all the witchy stuff. I’m also loving Alix E. Harrow’s writing, which is unsurprising as much as I loved her first book, The Ten Thousand Doors of January.

The Kiss Curse by Erin Sterling

After devouring The Ex Hex, I was eager to pick up the next book in Erin Sterling’s witchy romance series. I’m glad I did because I may have enjoyed this one even more than the first! I loved Gwyn and Wells so much. Their dynamic was *chef’s kiss* and I could read several books about their future shenanigans. I also enjoyed the underlying mystery in this book, though I definitely guessed its resolution. I just love a good, magical mystery, apparently.

The Kiss Curse by Erin Sterling

After completely devouring The Ex Hex, I couldn’t resist picking up the sequel when I came across it on Scribd! So far, this is just as fun and sexy as the first. I’m loving the rivals-to-lovers vibe and Gwen is a certified badass. This book makes me want to live in Graves Glen even more! Also, I have to say I’m really enjoying the narrator for this book.

The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley

I started listening to this because I had finished an audiobook and I didn’t have another one downloaded. I’ve been wanting to read a Lucy Foley book for awhile, so this seemed like a sign. So far, I’m enjoying the mystery of it all. It’s dark and twisty, with plenty of secrets to keep me interested. Jess kind of makes me want to throttle her, but that’s neither here nor there 😂

The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling

Uuuugh, this book was so freakin’ CUTE! I was reading this as part of a buddy read, but after the first section, I just couldn’t get myself to stop. Which is fine since the feeling was very mutual in the buddy read group 😂 This was such a compulsively readable book. When I wasn’t reading it, I wanted to be, and now that it’s over, I want more! Thankfully, this is just the start to a romance series, which means I can dive right back into Graves Glen.

  • Babel or the Necessity of Violence: an Arcane History of the Oxford Translators’ Revolution by R.F. Kuang: October is the month of buddy reads and this one was at the top of my pile! I’ve had the book since it came out and it’s be difficult holding off. This is probably my number two most anticipated book of the year and now I finally get to read it! So far, I’m absolutely loving the style of the writing, which immediately puts me in mind of the world of academia. It’s probably the footnotes. I’m also loving how this is, so far, a love letter to language. Add on top of that compelling characters and an interesting alternate history and I’m in heaven.
  • The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling: Here we have yet another buddy read and, y’all… if I didn’t five thousand other books to read this month, I would be done with this one already. I’ve only listened to the first nine chapters, but I am absolutely entranced! The small town setting! The witchy goodness! The witchy badness! THE TENSION! I want to gobble this book up all in one sitting, but I’m trying to be patient because I will be useless for buddy read chats if I have to remember what may and may not be a spoiler 😂 Suffice it to say, I’m having a lot of fun with this spooky romance.

Soul of the Deep by Natasha Bowen

So I’ve been sick for the last few days and that means my reading has taken a nosedive. I hate when a head cold gives me brain fog because I can’t focus on anything. That being said, though, the one book I’ve been trying to read through the haze is one. It’s the sequel to Skin of the Sea and, so far, it’s just as enthralling as the first book! I’m loving the development we’ve had so far and I’m eager to continue to see how it ends.

  • This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone: I picked this book up because I needed a quick read involving time travel. Now I’m mad that I never thought to read this book before because, y’all, it has me in a chokehold. I need Blue and Red to meet each other and run away together immediately. The tension! The banter! The weirdly hidden missives! Also the audiobook is *chef’s kiss* A++.
  • Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff: I have literally only read a few pages so I can’t give you a firm grasp of whether or not I’m liking it. I will say that I’m loving the format! I always forget how much I love mixed media format until I pick up a mixed media book. Again, I haven’t read enough to give a true update of how I feel about it, but I’m getting good vibes so far.

Current Reads

  • It Looks Like Us by Alison Ames: Holy $#^!, this book is freaky! And it dumps you right into the frights, too! I’m loving how intense and strange this story is, so far, and I may have stayed up way too late last night because I needed to know what happened next. This is a young adult horror that is set in Antarctica where a group of teens are tasked with helping collect ice samples. Of course, that all goes horribly wrong when a monster finds its way to them. The setting and the monster combine in a way that makes it truly spooky and this author knows how to write a creepy scene. I can’t wait to continue!
  • Unravel the Dusk by Elizabeth Lim: I’m finally finishing the Blood of the Stars duology! I read Spin the Dawn forever ago and truly enjoyed it. Now it’s time to complete the series by finishing this one. So far, the writing is just as good as the first book. I’m excited to pick up Maia’s story where it left off and it certainly starts off in an exciting, if dangerous, way! Looking forward to finishing this one up this week.

  • The Midnight Guardians by Ross Montgomery: I’m reading this book with the Middle Grade Marvels group and, so far, I’m loving it! It’s an interesting and surprisingly intense read. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised that it delves into some darker topics as it is set during WWII. I’m loving our main character, Col, and I’m excited to continue with his story!
  • Stillhouse Lake by Rachel Caine: Speaking of intense, this book is making me uncomfortable with the stuff that’s going down. But in a good way, I guess? Because I’m absolutely enthralled by what is going on in this book! I also want to fight people for Gwen because why can’t she just live?!? UGH! Sorry… I’m getting far too worked up over a fictional character 😂
