August 2021 Wrap Up

Hello, reader!

Guess who just had her best reading month (both in quantity and quality) in August?? Yup! This girl! Not only did I read a whopping 16 books (!!), but I read not one, not two, but four 5 star reads! Let’s take a moment to appreciate this because it won’t be happening again 😂 I have to give props to the Trope-ical Readathon and my competitive nature for bumping them numbers, lol. Though I didn’t finish all the books on my TBR, I read more prompts than I ever have before! After a kind of lackluster July, I’m happy that August really brought its A game. I read so many incredible books (and a couple of duds…) and found a couple of new favorites.

But enough chit-chat, let’s get to what I read in August!

Books Read

Click on the covers to be taken to the book’s Goodreads page

Book: The Furthest Station by Ben Aaronovitch

Rating: ★★★★

Thoughts: The Rivers of London readalong continues and, this time, I went with an audiobook! Which, I have to say, I really loved. The narrator was top-notch! This is a novella that I quite enjoyed, especially since we get to see a lot of Abigail. She’s quickly becoming one of my favorite characters in this series.

Book: The Princess Bride by William Goldman

Rating: ★★

Thoughts: This one hurt, I have to say. This was one of my favorite books when I was younger. The adventure! The love story! I remember falling for this book so hard. And then I re-read it with TWR book club and yiiiiikes. The fatphobia! The sexism! It was just… not it. Nostalgia is the main reason this got a two star instead of a one. I think I’ll just stick with the movie 😅

Book: The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo

Rating: ★★★★★

Thoughts: And then came my first five star read of the month! My goodness, this book was incredible! This is the first book in the Singing Hills Cycle and it completely captured my imagination. Nghi Vo has beautiful writing that pulls you into the story in the best way. I loved the cleric and their talking bird and I loved hearing Rabbit’s story. This book made me want to read everything Nghi Vo ever writes!

Magical Readathon: Orilium TBR

Hello, reader!

You know how I don’t ever do monthly TBRs? Welp, now I’m doing one two months in a row! And they are both because of readathons, haha. September is not only my birth-month, but the month of the return of the Magical Readathon hosted by G @ Book Roast! And it’s bigger and better than ever! I couldn’t possibly hope to explain all the moving pieces of this readathon, so I’m going to link the announcement video so you can be wrapped up in the magic just like I was.

The gist is that we the readers are characters in this new world of Aeldia and we’re on our way to try and gain entrance the magical school at Orilium. This first round of the readathon focuses on our journey to arrive at Orilium Academy along the Novice Path. There are seven stops along the way, which correspond to seven reading prompts. There are a ton of resources on a shared Google drive, including a map, a brief history of the world, and sheets to keep track of your character! Just a note that all the images and resources that I’ll share in this post were made or commissioned by G @ Book Roast.

Now, though there are seven stops on this path, you only need to “master” two to complete your journey. I’m trying to go for all seven, so cross your fingers for me! There are also prompts for creating your character, but you have until April 2022 to finish those. I haven’t chosen books for those prompts because I’m trying to not overload myself, lol. So let me tell you what I’ll be reading in September!

Also, stick around til the end for details on a giveaway!

Alright, let’s get to it!

Synopsis

“Two brothers. One prophecy. A world in peril.

When Kaiel loses his chance to become part of the legendary Daemon Hunters, joining the Bronze Guard mercenaries seems like the logical alternative. It is an opportunity to put his training to use and, more importantly, as the company is currently in the employ of Prince Alesandr, it will allow him to keep an eye on his younger brother, Darien, who’s determined to follow his dream of becoming a Ciralys magic-user.

But the broken continent of Athmay still bears the scars of the war between the Summoners some three-thousand years ago, and an unexpected battle with a daemon – a remnant of that ancient war – reveals the brothers’ connection to a forbidden bloodline. Soon they find themselves on the run from the prince, daemonic hordes, and a prophecy that could break the world anew.”
