WWW Wednesday: Aug 11, 2021

It’s time for another WWW Wednesday! This is a bookish meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words where bloggers answer the 3 Ws:

  1. What are you currently reading?
  2. What did you recently finish reading?
  3. What do you think you’ll read next?

If you’d like to learn more about any of these books, click on the cover to be taken to the Goodreads page.

Current Reads

  • Malice by Heather Walker: I’ve finally started this dark fairytale retelling and I’m already invested in what happens to Alyce. This book has a lot going for it! The plot is intriguing, I’m liking the tone, and the writing is fantastic so far. I’m eager to get more into the story.
  • Redemptor by Jordan Ifueko: That’s right! I’m finally reading my most anticipated book of 2021! No pressure, right? It certainly has started off with a bang and it’s great to see all this characters I love so much again. I expect I’ll tear through this one in no time, lol.

Recently Finished

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
  • The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo: Uuuummm, this novella was incredible! And makes me want to read more by Nghi Vo! This was lyrical, mystical, and beautifully sad. I loved the characters. I could read an entire book of Rabbit telling stories, tbh. This was a breath of fresh air and I can’t wait to continue with the series!
  • A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers: Two five star reads pretty much back to back and they’re both novellas! This is a sci-fi novella featuring two of my new favorite characters: a tea monk named Dex and the robot they run into in the wilderness, Mosscap. I would fight for both of them and I’ve only just met them, lol. Thankfully, this is the first book in a new series which means I get more of these amazing characters!

What’s Next

  • The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune: That’s right, I’ll be picking up on of the most hyped books of this year next. I’m really excited to read this one as it features one of my favorite tropes: found family. Which is why I’m using it for that challenge in the Trope-ical Readathon, lol. I’m also eager to get to this because I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about it!
  • Fireborn by Aisling Fowler: I’m reading this one for a The Write Reads blog tour. Much like the previous book, I’ve heard nothing but great things about it! So much so that, even if I wasn’t on the tour, I would want to pick it up soon, lol. It’s a middle grade that is promising a lot of action and some ✨magic✨, so I can’t wait! Also, how beautiful is that cover, right?

The Bookworm’s Book Tag

Hello, reader!

Today on the blog, I’ll be doing another fun, bookish tag! Tags are some of my favorite posts to do and I’m glad I’m finally starting to catch up on them. I’m excited to bring to you The Bookworm’s Tag, which looks like it’s gonna be a blast. I was tagged by the lovely Livy @ Shelves of Starlight. She runs a fantastic bookish blog, so you should definitely go check it out! Thank you so much for the tag, Livy! Sorry it took me forver to get to it 😅 This tag was originally created by Jehosheba @ Rambling Reviews.

Alright, let’s get to the questions!

The Rules:

  1. Thank and link the blogger who nominated you
  2. Include the tag graphic in your post
  3. Answer the 10 questions the blogger asked
  4. Nominate 5-10 bloggers
  5. Ask you nominees 10 book related questions
  6. Don’t feel bound to these rules
  7. Have fun!

Livy’s Questions:

Where is your favourite place to read?

Currently? The recliner in our living room. I can play an ambiance video on YouTube, cuddle with the cats, and keep an eye on our youngest all at the same time, lol. If I’m reading a book where I don’t want to be too distracted, I’ll read up in my little office or on the bed or, if the weather is agreeable, on the back porch. Those are my go-to spots!

What has been your favourite book so far this year?

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse! Hands down! Will I shut up about this book any time soon?

Probably not.

But that’s only what it deserves! This is a vivid and lush story set in ancient Mesoamerica that will have you completely wrapped up in its world. The world-building? Top shelf! The characters? Compelling! The… everything?! EPIC!

Seriously, I loved this book and I want more people to love it too. If you haven’t read it yet (especially if you’re a fan of fantasy), I’m begging you to give it a try!

Which book are you excited to read in the second half of the year?

Is anyone surprised by this?

Redemptor by Jordan Ifueko is my most anticipated book of 2021, so of course it’s the book I’m most excited to read in the second half of the year! This is the sequel to Raybearer, my favorite book of 2020, and I’m both stoked to read it and a little nervous. This is the problem with loving the first book in a series…. what if I don’t love the subsequent books as much?

There is also the fact that this is the last book in the series. I don’t know if I’m ready to say goodbye to Tarisai and the world of Aritsar. Still, I’ll be reading this book in August and I cannot wait!

First Lines Friday #17

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?  If you want to make your own post, feel free to use or edit the banner above, and follow the rules below:

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

If you’re using Twitter, don’t forget to use #FirstLinesFridays!

Hello, reader!

Happy Friday! I can’t tell you how excited I am that it’s finally the end of the week. It’s been super busy at work and ya girl is T I R E D. But now I can look forward to two days to just relax and garden and read. Ugh, it sounds fantastic.

But! That’s neither here nor there. Right now, it’s time for First Lines Friday! Today, I’m featuring a book that I’d been curious about for awhile and was happy to snag a copy from my library recently. I’ve been seeing it all over the bookish internet and my curiosity has just grown! I’m currently in the middle of it and it’s definitely living up to the hype. So now it’s time to share the first few lines and a few hints and see if I can get you hooked, as well.

The Line(s):

“Something wants to eat you,” called Almost Brilliant from her perch in a nearby tree, “and I shall not be sorry if it does.”
Chiming bells. Chih rolled to their feet, glancing around the perimeter and squinting at the jangling string of bells that surrounded the small campsite. For a moment, they were back at the abbey in Singing Hills, late for another round of prayers, chores, and lessons, but Singing Hills did not smell of ghosts and damp pine boughs. Singing Hills did not make the hairs on Chih’s arms rise up in alarm or their heart lurch with panic.”

The Hints:

This is a fantasy novella that was released last year.

It’s the first book in a series of fantasy novellas.

It’s set in an empire reminiscent of imperial China.

The Reveal:

Click the cover to be taken to the Goodreads page

Goodreads Synopsis

“A young royal from the far north is sent south for a political marriage in an empire reminiscent of imperial China. Her brothers are dead, her armies and their war mammoths long defeated and caged behind their borders. Alone and sometimes reviled, she must choose her allies carefully.

Rabbit, a handmaiden, sold by her parents to the palace for the lack of five baskets of dye, befriends the emperor’s lonely new wife and gets more than she bargained for.

At once feminist high fantasy and an indictment of monarchy, this evocative debut follows the rise of the empress In-yo, who has few resources and fewer friends. She’s a northern daughter in a mage-made summer exile, but she will bend history to her will and bring down her enemies, piece by piece.”

Did those first few lines capture your attention? Did they make you want to read the rest of the story? Let me know in the comments!

And, as always, happy reading!

Current Reads

  • Changeling by Matt Wesolowski: The Six Stories readalong continues! I’ve literally just started this one today and I’m already getting sucked into the story. I already had this one on my Kindle, but I’m really eyeing the audiobook 👀 I just keep hearing such great things about it! Maybe for book four… Anyways, I’m excited to get more into this one and see where it leads.
  • The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo: And then we have a book that’s not even on my TBR for this month, lol. What can I say, I saw it at the library, it’s super short, and one of the librarians said it was awesome. How could I not check it out?? I’ve read just a few pages, so I don’t have any real impressions as of yet, but I’m hoping I’ll love it.

Blog Tour: Kings and Daemons by Marcus Lee

Hello, reader!

I feel like it’s been a minute since I’ve done a blog tour post. After having multiple tours every month since the beginning of 2021, it’s weird to have a month where I only have one, lol. My one tour for the month of July is being hosted by the ever wonderful The Write Reads and I’m happy to report that it turned out to be a great time, too! Kings and Daemons by Marcus Lee is a dark fantasy novel that features magic, action, and, as promised in the title, daemons.

Before I get into the post and my review, though, I want to thank Dave @ The Write Reads and the author for providing me with a free e-book in exchange for my participation with this tour. As always, it is very much appreciated!

That being said, let’s get to it!

Blog Tour: Oathbreaker by A.J. Rettger

Hello, reader!

It’s my stop on another Storytellers On Tour blog tour today. I’m excited to talk to you about a fantasy novel that captured my attention called Oathbreaker by A.J. Rettger! This book features knights, elves, and a heaping helping of intrigue.

Before I continue, I want to thank the wonderful folks at Storytellers On Tour and the author for providing me with a free e-book in exchange for my participation with this tour! I always appreciate being able to help promote books and that’s especially true for indie authors. Also, if you’d like to visit any of the other stops on this fabulous tour, click the banner below to go to the tour schedule:

Now, let’s get to the post! Oh, and keep reading til the end for a surprise!

Synopsis

“For thousands of years, elves and non-humans alike had lived freely until humans colonized their land and forced them into hiding and subjugation. After years of living as slaves or second-class citizens, the elves rebelled, but their uprising failed, and humans remained victorious.

Mario Deschamps, a new graduate of the Knight’s College, sets off to complete his first deed, an accomplishment that will grant him knighthood and into the ordo equestris. But he has huge boots to fill. His late father, a famous knight and considered the Scourge of Bandits, single-handedly ended the Elven Uprising. Mario’s youthful confidence, vanity, and naivety don’t get him far in the real world, and he quickly finds himself trapped in a political climate where tensions are on the rise and war is inevitable.

In a world filled with monsters, outlaws, bounty hunters, demons, and murderous bandits, Mario is forced to make tough moral decisions. In a world fuelled by violence, hate, and bigotry, things are not as clear cut as he once thought. Lines have been drawn, but to complete his task, he must cross them all. With every choice, the consequences weigh greatly on him, leaving him full of guilt and doubting his path . . . and all the while, in the darkness, someone-or something-is waiting for him to break . . ..

A.J. Rettger weaves an epic tale of politics and prejudice, war and depravity, and legacy and destiny in his action-packed debut fantasy Oathbreaker….”

First Lines Friday #9

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?  If you want to make your own post, feel free to use or edit the banner above, and follow the rules below:

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

Hello, reader!

We’ve arrived at another Friday and I, for one, am super excited! This probably has a lot to do with the fact that, as of 3:30 pm EST, I will be on vacation! I’m looking forward to a week of relaxation and hanging out with the family. Before I go into full relaxation-mode, though, it’s time for First Lines Friday. Today’s selection is something I recently picked up to try and tackle my Netgalley backlist. I’m loving it so far and I think the opening lines will definitely capture your attention! Let’s see if you can guess what book I’m talking about from just a few lines and a couple of hints.

The Line(s):

“Today he would become a god. His mother had told him so.
‘Drink this,’ she said, handing him a cup. The cup was long and thin and filled with a pale creamy liquid. When he sniffed it, he smelled the orange flowers that grew in looping tendrils outside his window, the ones with the honey centers. But he also smelled the earthy sweetness of the bell-shaped flowers she cultivated in her courtyard garden, the one he was never allowed to play in. And he knew there were thinks he could not smell in the drink, secret things, things that came from the bag his mother wore around her neck, that whitened the tips of her fingers and his own tongue.”

The Hints:

This is an adult fantasy that features multiple POVs.

The color of the cover and part of the title share a name.

The author has previously written both young adult and middle grade novels.

The Reveal:

Click the cover to be taken to the Goodreads page

Goodreads Synopsis

The first book in the Between Earth and Sky trilogy, inspired by the civilizations of the Pre-Columbian Americas and woven into a tale of celestial prophecies, political intrigue, and forbidden magic.

A god will return
When the earth and sky converge
Under the black sun

In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial event proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world.

Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a man’s mind. Her ship carries one passenger. Described as harmless, the passenger, Serapio, is a young man, blind, scarred, and cloaked in destiny. As Xiala well knows, when a man is described as harmless, he usually ends up being a villain.”

As I mentioned, I’ve already started reading this book in an effort to knock some novels off of my Netgalley backlist. I’m so glad I requested it because I’m absolutely loving this story! There are certain POVs I prefer more than others (Xiala has my whole heart) but this has been thoroughly enjoyable, so far, and I can’t wait to continue!

Did those first few lines capture your attention? Did they make you want to read the rest of the story? Let me know in the comments!

And, as always, happy reading!

Blog Tour: The Fires of Vengeance by Evan Winter

Hello, reader!

Back in July of 2019, my family and I had just moved cross-country to Massachusetts. We had moved into our apartment, but none of our stuff was there. We were sleeping on air mattresses and sitting in those cloth folding chairs that you can never get back into their flimsy, little holders. It was a stressful time, but I had something with me that first month that helped me relax. I had an ARC of Evan Winter’s The Rage of Dragons. I had won it in a giveaway hosted by Orbit on their Instagram, not knowing much about it beyond the fact that it was written by a Black man and it had dragons. So, when I picked up during that stressful first month in our new home, I don’t think I was fully prepared for the incredible story contained within those pages. I flew through that ARC and knew before I was even halfway through that I was going to give it five stars. I also knew that I would fight the demons of Ishihogo to get my hands on the sequel!

Fast forward to this past summer, when Shealea @ Caffeine Book Tours put a call out to the bookish community for people would like to be part of #TheBurningTour for The Fires of Vengeance, the sequel I was so desperate to read. I don’t think I’ve ever filled out a form so fast! And you could have knocked me over with a feather when I was selected to be a part of the tour! So, before we get into the meat of this post, I wanted to take a moment to thank Shealea @ Caffeine Book Tours and the publisher, Orbit, for this opportunity. There are also a lot of other incredible bookish content creators on this tour, as well, so click here to take a look at the schedule. Also, we might as well get some disclaimers out of the way.

First, as you’ve probably figured out, I did receive an ARC of The Fires of Vengeance from Caffeine Book Tours and Orbit in exchange for my participation in this promotional tour. Second, as this is a review for the second book in a series, there might be some slight spoilers for the content of the first book within my review. If you haven’t read The Rage of Dragons (um, why haven’t you?) and wish to, perhaps skip this post until you have. This review, however, will be spoiler free for The Fires of Vengeance. And, last, stick with me until after my review for information about an amazing giveaway 🎉🎉🎉

Alright, with all that said, let’s get to it!

Synopsis

“Desperate to delay an impending attack by the indigenous people of Xidda, Tau and his queen craft a dangerous plan. If Tau succeeds, the queen will have the time she needs to assemble her forces and launch an all-out assault on her own capital city, where her sister is being propped up as the ‘true’ Queen of the Omehi.

If the city can be taken, if Tsiora can reclaim her throne and reunite her people, then the Omehi might have a chance to survive the coming onslaught.”
