Top 5 Tuesday: Books With Swords

Top 5 Tuesday is a fun, weekly meme that asks you to pick 5 books that fit that week’s theme. It was created by Bionic Bookworm and is currently being hosted by Meeghan Reads. You should check out their wonderful blog for more details and the list of prompts!

Hello, reader!

We’ve arrived at another lovely Tuesday, which means it’s time for a Top 5 Tuesday post! This week, I had a much easier time with the scavenger hunt. That’s because I had to find books with swords on the cover and, apparently, I read a lot of sword books 😂 I’ve trimmed the list down to five of my favorite books that feature a large piece of cutlery on the front.

That being said, let’s get to my list!

#1. Nimona by N.D. Stevenson

This is probably one of my favorite graphic novels, so I’m glad one of the characters is holding a sword so I could feature it! Lord Blackheart happens to be my favorite character, too. Nimona is a shapeshifter that is bound and determined to become the villainous Blackwell’s minion. This was such a wild ride with action and adventure on every page. It also made me get a bit teary-eyed with Nimona and Blackwell’s backstories. It was such an incredible read!

#2. The Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter

There is quite an assortment of weapons on the cover of this one, but there’s definitely at least one sword. It makes sense as this book follows a nation at war and a man seeking revenge. The first book in The Burning series was such an intense ride! It’s an incredibly compelling story that has fantastic world-building. The characters have to be my favorite part of the story, though, especially Tau. He is single-minded yet complex and it’s fascinating watching his growth throughout this novel.

Current Reads

  • Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan: I had checked this book out from the library but never got around to picking it up. So, when I was looking for a new audiobook to read and this one popped up on Scribd, I instantly downloaded it! So far, I’m really loving the tone of this story. It is beautifully written and evocative, making me feel like I’m in the book alongside the characters. Our main character, Xingyin, is fascinating and I can’t wait to continue her story.
  • The Book of Cold Cases by Simone St. James: I’m finally reading a Simone St. James book! I’ve been wanting to try a thriller by her for awhile now. I have quite literally just started this one (I’m on, like… page 5) so I have no opinions about the book either way. I’m not actively hating it, so… so far, so good!

Blog Tour: The Merciless Ones by Namina Forna

Hello, reader!

Today, it’s my stop on the book tour hosted by TBR & Beyond Tours for one of my most anticipated reads of 2022: The Merciless Ones by Namina Forna! After reading (and loving!) The Gilded Ones last year, I could not wait to get my hands on the latest installment in this lush world. Especially after what happened at the end of the first book!

Before I get into my post, however, let me take a moment to thank some people. First, thank you to the wonderful team at TBR & Beyond Tours for allowing me to participate in this tour. I was so excited when I got the email confirmation! Second, thank you to the publisher, via Netgalley, for providing me with a free e-ARC so that I could participate. It is, as always, very much appreciated. Rest assured that all opinions contained in my post are my own.

Fans of The Gilded Ones and Children of Blood and Bone will love the second book in an epic fantasy series about a girl who is the key to saving the empire–or its greatest threat.

It’s been six months since Deka has freed the goddesses and discovered who she really is. There are now wars waging across the kingdom. Otereans now think jatu are traitors to the nation. Deka is called a monster.

But the real battle has only just begun and Deka must lead the charge. Deka is tasked with freeing the rest of the goddesses. Only as she begins to free them, she begins to see a strange symbol everywhere in places of worship and worn on armor. There’s something unnatural about that symbol; just looking at it makes Deka lose her senses. Even worse, it seems to repel her powers. She can’t command or communicate with the new deathshrieks. In fact, she can’t even understand them when they speak.

Deka knows freeing the goddesses is just the beginning. She can tell whatever dark force out is powerful and there is something sinister out there threatening the kingdom connected to that symbol–something merciless–that her army will need to stop before humanity crumbles. But Deka’s powers are only getting stronger…and her strongest weapon could be herself.

Content Warning: scenes of violence, including some graphic violence and description of sexual assault

Sundays In Bed With… The Merciless Ones by Namina Forna

Sundays in Bed With… is a meme that dares to ask you what book has been in your bed this morning and is hosted by Midnight Book Girl. Come share what book you’ve spent time curled up reading in bed with, or which book you wish you had time to read today!

Hello, reader!

It has been a lazy Sunday here and lazy Sundays are perfect for reading. What book have I been spending my day with this lovely Sunday? It’s the sequel to one of my favorite reads of last year and one of my most anticipated reads of 2022! I’ve been eager to read this book, so was very excited to be included in the TBR & Beyond Tours book tour for it.

Now, let me tell you more about this read that has re-captured my imagination!

My Sunday Read Is…

The Merciless Ones by Namina Forna

I’ve dived right back into the world that Namina Forna has created and it is just as captivating the second time around! It throws us right into the action, with Deka and crew dealing with the consequences of the end of book one, The Gilded Ones. There are strange things happening and I’m captivated by all that is going on! This is just as vivid and cinematic as the first one. I’m not sure how this is going to end but, if what I’ve read so far has been incredible!

Current Reads

  • The A.B.C. Murders by Agatha Christie: I’m continuing on my Poirot reading and, so far, this has been one of the more interesting ones. I’ve only just begun, but I’m loving the mystery in this! I’m also loving that Hastings is back. He may be completely obtuse, but he’s my favorite, haha. The friendship between Poirot and Hastings is one of my favorite things in these books, so I always miss Hastings when he’s not around. Anyways, I’m really enjoying this one so far.
  • The Merciless Ones by Namina Forna: I’ve started in on one of my most anticipated reads of the year and, so far, it’s living up to expectations. Of course, I’m only a few chapters in, but this is just as cinematic and vivid as the first one! I feel like this book is going to contain a bit more action than the first since, ya know, there’s a war going on and I am ready for it. I’m excited to see how this one turns out.

Top 5 Tuesday: Anticipated Reads for Apr-Jun 2022

Top 5 Tuesday is a fun, weekly meme that asks you to pick 5 books that fit that week’s theme. It was created by Bionic Bookworm and is currently being hosted by Meeghan Reads. You should check out their wonderful blog for more details and the list of prompts!

Hello, reader!

It’s time for another Top 5 Tuesday! A new month means a whole new list of prompts and we’re kicking off April with a good one. That’s because, this week, I’ll be talking about my top five most anticipated books that are coming out between April and June! I’ll be the first to admit that I haven’t been keeping up with the new releases in 2022 as much as I did last year. It took me a minute to pick through my Want to Read shelf on Goodreads and find the books for this list. But the five that I did find are definitely at the top of my anticipated list!

That being said, let’s dive into the post.

#1. Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse

I can’t start a most anticipated list with anything other than my most anticipated book of 2022! I cannot WAIT to get back into the world that Rebecca Roanhorse created in Black Sun. Especially after that ending. I need to know what happens with Xiala and Serapio, dangit! I’m so hyped for this book and I’ll be reading it as soon as it comes out.

Release Date: April 19, 2022

#2. The Marvellers by Dhonielle Clayton

Give me all the magical school stories by BIPOC authors pleeeease! This book sounds absolutely incredible. It sounds whimsical and diverse and like it’s going to be a wonderful ride. I haven’t read anything by Dhonielle Clayton as of yet, but I’ve wanted to for a hot minute. When I saw this was coming out, I figured there was no better time than now!

Release Date: May 3, 2022

#5OnMyTBR – Daggers, Swords, Duels

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook where you chose five books from your to-be-read pile that fit that week’s theme. If you’d like more info, head over to the announcement post!

Hello, reader!

It’s a bit later in the week than usual for my 5 On My TBR post, but this has been the week of blog tours! And I’m not mad about it! Knowing what the theme for this week was, though, there was no way I could pass it up. As a huge fantasy nerd, how could I see dagger, swords, and duels and not want to participate! That practically screams fantasy.

Now I had quite a few fantasy novels on my TBR that could have made it to the list. I decided to be a bit cheeky, though, and pick ones that not only had weapons on the inside, but on the cover, as well. Funnily enough, they all ended up being YA, but we know I love me a good YA fantasy, so it’s hardly unsurprising 😂

That being said, let’s jump into the list!

#1. The Keeper of Night by Kylie Lee Baker

This is a more recent addition to my TBR that I’m rather excited to read. It features a young woman who is half Reaper and half Shinigami who is fighting to be accepted. It promises a lot of action and swordplay, so it definitely fits the bill here! I’ve heard mixed reviews on this one, but I’m still eager to give it a shot. And I do really love the cover! If the protagonist is anywhere near as badass as she looks on the cover, I know I’m gonna love this.

#2. One for All by Lillie Lainoff

I read The Three Musketeers last year and kind of fell in love with the four idiots contained within. So learning about this gender-bent retelling that focuses on a heroine with a chronic illness had me absolutely ascending! It sounds fantastic and definitely promises a lot of stabby-stabby action. The author also recently posted some character art for the four main characters as part of the pre-order campaign and I’m in love. I cannot wait to read this one!

#5OnMyTBR – 2022 Releases

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook where you chose five books from your to-be-read pile that fit that week’s theme. If you’d like more info, head over to the announcement post!

Hello, reader!

It’s time for my first 5 On My TBR of 2022. The theme this week is quite appropriate, too. We’re focusing on 2022 releases, which is a topic high on the bookish world’s mind. We’ve entered a new year and there are a lot of new, shiny books that are coming out. Even though I’m trying not to buy as many books this year, there are definitely at least five 2022 releases that I absolutely have to have! In fact, I have quite a few more, but I’m gonna whittle it down to five 😂

Let’s see which new release make the cut!

#1. Babel by R.F. Kuang

The full title of this alone makes me want to read this. I mean… who wouldn’t want to read something titled Babel: or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators’ Revolution? It’s so pretentious and I LOVE IIIIIITTTT. Besides, I am beyond hyped to see R.F. Kuang’s fantasy take on dark academia. This sounds incredible and I need it. Not want… need.

#2. The Merciless Ones by Namina Forna

After finally reading The Gilded Ones last year, I knew I was going to want this book as soon as it came out. If it is half as good as the first book, it’s gonna blow my socks off! Namina Forna’s writing is spectacular and I’m ready for her to transport me once again. Besides, I need to know the next step in Deka’s journey! It doesn’t hurt that the cover is just gorgeous 😍
