This week, the books I’ll be talking about are all standalones that are collecting dust on my bookshelf. All of these books are ones that I can’t wait to get to, but have been left behind in the rush of new books. I’m hoping to make room for them on my bedside table TBR soon!
#1. The Nobody People by Bob Proehl
I bought this book because it was blurbed by one of my favorite authors, Seanan McGuire. The fact that it sounds like a modern day X-men (in a fashion) didn’t hurt, either! I really do want to pick this one up soon. It just sounds like it would be a wild ride with lots of moral ambiguity. And if it’s suggested by one of my favorite writers, I have to give it a chance, right? Right!

Technically, I should have posted this last Sunday. Last Sunday was Mother’s Day, though, and I spent the entire day being spoiled and lazy, lol. So I’m bringing you last week’s topic this week! The books I’ll be talking about that are chilling on my physical TBR, waiting for my attention, are series that I own, but have not started. Most of the ones I’ll be discussing are series where I bought the first book but have yet to pick up the rest of the series because I still haven’t read the book I bought! There are quite a few to talk about, so let’s dive in.
#1. The Legacy of Orisha series
I’ve been interested in this series for quite some time. I received the first in the series as a gift and ended up buying the second on a whim while shopping. Because that’s the type of person I am 😂 I’m excited to dive into The Children of Blood and Bone and discover the world that Tomi Adeyemi has crafted! And, besides all that, the cover is just iconic. We love to see a dark-skinned black girl front and center on a YA fantasy!
#2. The Arc of a Scythe series
This is one of those books that I picked up simply because of internet hype. So many Booktubers love this series! Of course, it also sounds incredibly intriguing: a world where no one dies, so a whole organization forms to cull the population. I can only image the moral dilemmas that will arise! I picked the first book up at a Barnes & Noble some time ago and now it just sits… patiently waiting for its time.
I’ve mentioned quite often the fact that I have an entire bookshelf dedicated to books I own, yet have not read. It’s the reason why I decided to participate in the #StartOnYourShelfathon. It’s my not-so-secret shame. But the even bigger shame?
…I often forget what books are even on that shelf 😬
I know, I know! How can I forget what books I’ve purchased over the years? Because ya girl has a pretty terrible memory, not gonna lie. And I’ve spent my past few reading years reading books I had recently purchased instead of books I already owned. Or, and this happened quite often, buying a bunch of books at once, only reading one or two, and stowing the rest on the TBR shelf to be forgotten.
But I have decided to change my ways! I’ve already made it a mission to reduce my owned TBR by at least 10% this year. And I’ve found something that I think will help to keep these poor, forgotten books in the forefront of my mind! Fiona @ Fi’s Bibliofiles has started a new bookish meme that is just perfect for me! It’s called Sunday By My Shelf and the purpose is to explore books sitting on your physical TBR as opposed to a virtual one. (We’ll not even talk about my Goodreads Want to Read shelf…) This is a bi-weekly meme with new topics to talk about each time. The schedule can be found on Fiona’s original post here. For now, though, let’s get to this week’s theme, which is:
Series on my shelf I have started, but haven’t finished
#1. The Mistborn Series
I started the original Mistborn trilogy a long time ago. At least, it feels like it’s been a long time! I fell in love with the universe and the characters fairly quickly, yet it is taking me forever to get through the trilogy! It has nothing to do with the books. I tore through the first book and the second was as gripping, if not more so. I own The Hero of Ages and it sits on my bookshelf, judging me. It’s not as though I don’t want to read it… I just constantly skip over the book to read something shiny and new.
This is clearly a problem for me.
That being said, I’m planning on reading the last book of the original trilogy soon because I recently discovered there’s another Mistborn trilogy! It’s set in a more modern time frame and it sounds like it’s going to be incredible!
#2. The Girls of Paper and Fire Series
I read Girls of Paper and Fire last year and absolutely fell in love with everything about the book. The world-building, the writing, LEI AND WREN!! Everything combined in a perfect mix to knock my socks off. So, when the sequel came out, I had to snatch it up!
And now it sits on my shelf… gathering dust. This is another instance of me buying a bunch of books at once and getting distracted by another one. I think Ninth House was the culprit this time. I honestly forgot I bought this until I went to write this post and was looking through the books on my shelf! I have problems!
Either way, I’m still really eager to continue this series. I’m going to have to bump this one up the TBR list.
#3. The Strange the Dreamer Series
I started this duology an embarrassingly long time ago 😅 I would die for Lazlo and Sarai, not gonna lie. I just love them and this story so much! And Laini Taylor just has an incredible way with words. And yet, here I am, with Muse of Nightmares staring at me from my shelf as I pick up other, newer books. It’s silently judging me and I deserve it.
I think part of what’s stopping me is the fact that, once I read Muse of Nightmares… that’s it. The story is over. And I’m not sure I’m ready for this story to be over! Still, I do want to finish this series sooner rather than later.
Side note: I’ve also read the first book in Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone series and haven’t finished that one, either. But I don’t own any of the other books in the series, so it’s getting an honorable mention.
#4. The Six of Crows Series
😬😬😬
Look. I’ve owned Crooked Kingdom for quite some time. I bought it almost as soon as it came out because I adored Six of Crows. Kaz! Inej! I needed more! But, once again, the sequel in this popular duology found itself gathering dust on my shelf as so many of it’s predecessors have.
I swear I buy these books with good intentions! I am going to read all of them at some point in time!
I’ve mentioned before that I think the reason I haven’t pick this one up is that I have… heard things. And I know it’s going to rip my heart out of my chest and laugh as it’s doing so. Which, honestly, I’m okay with. I love a book that can make me feel that much.
But I’m just not ready 😭
#5. The Kingkiller Chronicle Series
This is a series that I started more recently than some of the others on this list. My husband read the first book, The Name of the Wind, and convinced me that I would love it. I gave it a try and ended up completely wrapped up in Kvothe’s story! My husband has owned the second book for what seems like a really long time. I can feel a little better about myself, though, because he hasn’t read it either 😂
I suppose I can also tell myself that I’m waiting for the last book to come out before continuing on. Let’s ignore the fact that I’ve read every Game of Thrones book and have no idea if we’ll ever get the last books in that series. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it!
