WWW Wednesday: Jul 8, 2020

It’s time for another WWW Wednesday! This is a bookish meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words where bloggers answer the 3 Ws:

  1. What are you currently reading?
  2. What did you recently finish reading?
  3. What do you think you’ll read next?

If you’d like to learn more about any of these books, click on the cover to be taken to the Goodreads page.

Current Reads

  • The Jumbies by Tracey Baptiste: I’m reading this book as part of the Middle Grade Marvels book club and it’s incredibly hard sticking with the reading schedule! It’s such an interesting and fun story and the setting is richly invoked. I can’t wait to get back into it!
  • Thomas Wildus and the Book of Sorrows: This is another book I’m reading as part of the Middle Grade Marvels group! (Which, btw, you should all totally join) I just started this one because ya girl packed her copy and just found it yesterday, heh. That being said, so far I’m enjoying the journey!
  • Voice of War by Zack Argyle: This is a fantasy novel I’m reading for a blog tour run by Storytellers on Tour. It’s definitely got me intrigued, so far, and the world-building is pretty on point. I’m excited to continue this one, as well.

Can’t Wait Wednesday: Jun 10, 2020

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a meme where you get to flail about whatever upcoming book you’re excited to read. Though it is generally a new release, it certainly can be any book that’s on your TBR! This meme is currently hosted by Wishful Endings and it’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.

Hello, reader!

Another super late night post because ya girl is spending her entire days packing. You’d think I would have planned ahead and scheduled some posts for this week, but… yeah. That didn’t happen so here we are 😅 It’s still Wednesday, though, and I’m ready to talk about a book that I am dying to read. And there may be a reason I picked this one especially today. If you follow a certain children’s literature author, I’m sure you’ll figure out why soon enough.

So this book is one I’ve been hearing about since 2019. It’s a book that features:

  • Ghosts!
  • A trans main character!
  • Creepy vibes!
  • Supernatural love!

The book I’m talking about is….

Goodreads Synopsis:

Yadriel has summoned a ghost, and now he can’t get rid of him.

When his traditional Latinx family has problems accepting his gender, Yadriel becomes determined to prove himself a real brujo. With the help of his cousin and best friend Maritza, he performs the ritual himself, and then sets out to find the ghost of his murdered cousin and set it free.

However, the ghost he summons is actually Julian Diaz, the school’s resident bad boy, and Julian is not about to go quietly into death. He’s determined to find out what happened and tie up some loose ends before he leaves. Left with no choice, Yadriel agrees to help Julian, so that they can both get what they want. But the longer Yadriel spends with Julian, the less he wants to let him leave.”

Publication Date: September 1st, 2020

Pre-order here: Bookshop::Indiebound::TBD::B&N::Amazon

Why I’m Excited

It just sounds like it’s going to be so cute! Creepy, but cute! I want to watch Yadriel and Julian fall in love because I just need some softness right now, okay? And I’m super curious in brujo traditions and I’m always up for a witchy/supernatural romp! The fact that it is now coming out during my birth-month just makes it that much more appealing 😉 And, of course, the cover is just gorgeous! I can’t wait to get my hands on this one.

What book are you excited to pick up? Have any of you had the pleasure to read Cemetery Boys yet? Let me know in the comments!

And, as always, happy reading!

If you have a moment, as well, considering signing this petition for Tony McDade, a Black trans man that was recently killed by police in Tallahassee. And much love to everyone in the trans community who may be hurting right now. Trans men are men. Trans women are women. And that’s that on that.

#5OnMyTBR – LGBTQIA+ Books by Black Authors

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook where you chose five books from your to-be-read pile that fit that week’s theme. If you’d like more info, head over to the announcement post!

Hello, reader!

This post is going up very late because ya girl has been a busy bee today. We recently purchased a house and will be moving soon, so there’s been a lot of going through stuff and packing. It’s… not fun, but I’m still so excited to get into our new place! I also fell into a book and have just emerged, lol. I’m sure you all know how it is 😉

Anyways, to the post! This week’s #5OnMyTBR theme is actually a freebie. Seeming as we are in Pride month and I’m still boosting Black voices with everything going on, I decided to focus on five LGBTQIA+ books written by Black authors! I’m so eager to pick up all five of these books!

#1. Cinderella Is Dead by Kalynn Bayron

Cinderella Is Dead is a YA fantasy that will be coming out in July. It sounds like it’s going to be incredible! We are thrown into a fairytale world long after Cinderella has found her prince. Now, all the eligible maidens are made to attend the Annual Ball, where they will be matched with men to marry… or mysteriously disappear. We follow Sophia, who is in love with her best friend, Erin, and wants nothing to do with the Annual Ball. She flees, only to find herself embroiled with a plot to bring down the king himself.

I mean… does that not sound amazing?! Also… the cover. We know I’m a sucker for a nice cover.

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook where you chose five books from your to-be-read pile that fit that week’s theme. If you’d like more info, head over to the announcement post!

Hello, reader!

How is this Monday treating everyone? I’ve been a bit of a lazy bum all day, which felt wonderful compared to my normally busy days. Of course, that also means I was putting off blogging until just now! But I couldn’t skip today’s #5OnMyTBR topic because it’s all about books with blue covers. Blue is my favorite cover and we all know I’m a sucker for a pretty book! So here are the 5 blue books on my TBR that jumped to my mind.

#1. One Day in December by Josie Silver

This was a Book of the Month pick that was a result of me trying things out of my comfort zone. This is a wintery romance that sounded like I could get into it. Though the concept of falling for some guy you randomly see while on the bus is a bit much for me, I am curious how this romance would work out! I feel like I probably won’t pick this up til winter time, but I am excited to finally read it.

Sunday By My Shelf: Standalones

Hello, reader!

It’s time for another Sunday By My Shelf! This is a bookish meme that was started by Fiona @ Fi’s Bibliofiles. The purpose is to explore books sitting on your physical TBR as opposed to a virtual one. It is bi-weekly, with new topics to talk about each time. The schedule can be found on Fiona’s original post here!

This week, the books I’ll be talking about are all standalones that are collecting dust on my bookshelf. All of these books are ones that I can’t wait to get to, but have been left behind in the rush of new books. I’m hoping to make room for them on my bedside table TBR soon!

#1. The Nobody People by Bob Proehl

I bought this book because it was blurbed by one of my favorite authors, Seanan McGuire. The fact that it sounds like a modern day X-men (in a fashion) didn’t hurt, either! I really do want to pick this one up soon. It just sounds like it would be a wild ride with lots of moral ambiguity. And if it’s suggested by one of my favorite writers, I have to give it a chance, right? Right!

Sunday By My Shelf: Series I Want To Start

Hello, reader!

It’s time for another Sunday By My Shelf! This is a bookish meme that was started by Fiona @ Fi’s Bibliofiles. The purpose is to explore books sitting on your physical TBR as opposed to a virtual one. It is bi-weekly, with new topics to talk about each time. The schedule can be found on Fiona’s original post here!

Technically, I should have posted this last Sunday. Last Sunday was Mother’s Day, though, and I spent the entire day being spoiled and lazy, lol. So I’m bringing you last week’s topic this week! The books I’ll be talking about that are chilling on my physical TBR, waiting for my attention, are series that I own, but have not started. Most of the ones I’ll be discussing are series where I bought the first book but have yet to pick up the rest of the series because I still haven’t read the book I bought! There are quite a few to talk about, so let’s dive in.

#1. The Legacy of Orisha series

I’ve been interested in this series for quite some time. I received the first in the series as a gift and ended up buying the second on a whim while shopping. Because that’s the type of person I am 😂 I’m excited to dive into The Children of Blood and Bone and discover the world that Tomi Adeyemi has crafted! And, besides all that, the cover is just iconic. We love to see a dark-skinned black girl front and center on a YA fantasy!

#2. The Arc of a Scythe series

This is one of those books that I picked up simply because of internet hype. So many Booktubers love this series! Of course, it also sounds incredibly intriguing: a world where no one dies, so a whole organization forms to cull the population. I can only image the moral dilemmas that will arise! I picked the first book up at a Barnes & Noble some time ago and now it just sits… patiently waiting for its time.

Currently Reads

Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo: So, this book honestly wasn’t on my radar. I had heard about it and thought the premise was interesting, but I hadn’t read a book written in verse before. I wasn’t sure how I would feel about it.

And then I read The Poet X by the same author and IMMEDIATELY downloaded this book so I could read it, too! I found both audiobooks on Scribd and, honestly, that is the way to go with both of them. The audiobooks are incredible! I’m not too far into Clap When You Land, but I feel like I’m going to love it just as much as The Poet X.

Recently Finished

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Disenchanted by Brianna Sugalski: This one ended up being a fun, action-packed read that I enjoyed, but didn’t love. Mostly because it was incredibly insta-lovey and that just isn’t my thing. Still, I loved the descriptions and the action and, overall, had a good time reading this. You can read my full review here!

Harrow Lake by Kat Ellis: A horror book that read like a campy 80’s horror flick! This was a creepy, atmospheric read and I really enjoyed it. You could feel the sinister vibes just oozing from the pages! You can read my full review here.

The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo: I read this on a whim after downloading Scribd. I had always heard that the audiobook was incredible and, dear lord, folks weren’t kidding! This was so emotional and raw and beautiful. There were tears, there was laughter… I absolutely adored this book! I’m still gathering my thoughts together on this one, but a review will be up soon.

What’s Next

Catalyst by Tracy Richardson: I’ll participating in the #TheWriteReads blog tour for this book, so I’ll definitely be picking it up next! It’s about a young woman named Marcie with some mysterious powers and it sounds like it will be a fun ride! I’m looking forward to it.

#5OnMyTBR – Superhero Books

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook where you chose five books from your to-be-read pile that fit that week’s theme. If you’d like more info, head over to the announcement post!

Hello, reader!

It’s been a minute since I participated in the #5OnMyTBR weekly meme, hasn’t it? When I saw this week’s theme, I knew I couldn’t pass it up! Strap on your capes and fasten your utility belts; we’re talking about superheros! Though I don’t know the most about superheros and am hopelessly behind on Marvel movies, they were always hold a special place in my heart. I remember growing up reading comic books and cartoon shows centered around superheros, as most kids did. So I’m excited to talk about 5 superhero books on my TBR!

TBR Book Tag

TBR Book Tag

While reading through various blogs, I stumbled upon this tag over at A Journey of Words. Though I’m not one to typically build monthly TBRs, I still have quite an extensive list of books I want to read! Besides, I thought the questions were intriguing, so why not give it a whirl?

With that said, let’s dive in!

How do you keep track of your TBR pile?

Currently, I have an entire bookshelf in my bedroom dedicated to all my unread books! I’ve been meaning to focus on reading those books this year, though this past month has been filled with library books… oops. Still, it’s nice to have all my unread books in one spot.

Other than that, I have a Goodreads shelf dedicated to books I want to read. That shelf is much more full than my physical bookshelf, heh. I just want to read all the books, ya’ll.

Is your TBR mostly print or e-books?

Currently it is mostly print books. I tend to enjoy reading physical books more than e-books, so they make up more of my owned books. I do have a growing collection of e-books, though, and most of my ARCs are in e-book format. And I have a small Audible collection, as well. I just have books everywhere, lol.

A book that’s been on your TBR list the longest?

It used to be The Count of Monte Cristo but I finally finished that book last year! So now the one that has been there the longest would probably beeeee…

Are we seeing a trend? Most of the oldest books on my TBR are classics and ya girl has a tense relationship with classics. I did end up loving The Count of Monte Cristo, though, so perhaps it’s time to suck it up and finally read Les Mis. I mean, it’s only been on my TBR since *peeks* 2011?!

Yikes…

A book you recently added to your TBR?

I literally just added this book to my TBR yesterday! The author, Alix E. Harrow, posted the cover reveal on Twitter and… I mean… look at it! How could I not add it?! Also, I adored the author’s first book, The Ten Thousand Doors of January, and this book is about witches. I just want it now, please.

A book in your TBR strictly because of its beautiful cover?

Like, all of them?

Hmm… what is the most recent book I picked just because of the cover? Let’s go with…

I distinctly remember seeing the cover of this book, not knowing a single thing about it, and thinking, “I must read this.” I LOVE this cover! And I own the book! But still haven’t read it because of who I am as a person!

Sigh…

Still, since randomly buying it because pretty, I have actually learned more about the book and I’m excited to actually read it!

A book on your TBR that you never plan on reading?

Well, the whole point of a TBR is that they are books I’m planning on reading at some point in time. I don’t think there are any books on my TBR that I’m actively planning on not reading. That being said, I’m sure there are quite a few books on my TBR that I won’t manage to get to in my lifetime. And, if I’m being honest with myself, one of the classics would be most likely to be forgotten.

An unpublished book on your TBR that you’re excited for?

I just… really need this book. I need to know how Fie’s story ends. I need to know what’s up with that title! That title has me W O R R I E D.

A book on your TBR that basically everyone’s read but you?

I feel like everyone has read this book but me, heh 😅 It is definitely on my soon-to-read list. It’s currently chilling on my physical TBR bookshelf, judging me for ignoring it for so long. I just know I’m going to love this book, but I kept skipping it for shiny new releases. Mayhaps I’ll finally get to it in March.

A book on your TBR that everyone recommends to you?

This was the book I heard the most about last year. Quite a few of the Booktubers I watched loved this, it was all over book Twitter… it was freakin’ everywhere! I found myself falling for the hype. So now it’s hanging out on my TBR bookshelf, waiting to be picked up. With as well as my recent foray into adult romances went, I’ll probably be reading this sooner than later.

A book on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

*grabby hands* GIMMIE!

…Please?

Seriously, though, I’m so excited to read this book. The cover! Harrow! More weird necromancy sh*t! My body is ready.

How many books are on your Goodreads shelf?

Hahahahahahaha, do we have to talk about it…?

Yes?

….Fine. It’s *cough*539*cough*

I have a problem, okay?

How many books are on your TBR? What are you most excited to read? Let me know in the comments! Feel free to snag this tag if you enjoyed it! I’d love to see your answers, so drop me a link if you decide to join the fun.

And, as always, happy reading!
