Current Reads

  • These Fleeting Shadows by Kate Alice Marshall: I’ve just started this spooky YA horror and, already, I’m entranced! The atmosphere is pitch perfect, the little hints that something is not right have me intrigued, and I’m truly interested in finding out more about our main character, Helen. I’m very much getting an The Inheritance Games vibes, what with her inheritance of this creepy house hinging on her staying in it a full year and some less than friendly relatives who seem upset about the will. But this is definitely got a more paranormal vibe and I am here for it!
  • Hide by Kiersten White: I literally just finished the first chapter of this horror novel and, in comparison, I’m not as immediately into it as I was with These Fleeting Shadows. Maybe it’s because I’ve only read one chapter so far. Maybe it’s because nothing has really happened yet. I’m definitely intrigued enough to keep going but the writing hasn’t really gripped me yet. The main character, Mack, certainly seems like she has a Past and I’m interested to find out more about her. Here’s hoping I get more invested as I continue.

Current Reads

  • Jade City by Fonda Lee: I’m not too far into this book but it certainly starts off with a bang! I also kind of already love Hilo and this seems like a bad choice to make? I dunno, there’s something about that hot-headed idiot that entices. The entire Kaul family are an interesting bunch and I can’t wait to learn more about them. I’m loving the writing, as well! So… so far, so good.
  • Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett: I’m finally continuing on reading the Discworld books! I’m glad that you can kind of pick these books up at your own place and easily fall back into the story. And I had forgotten how much I enjoy Sir Pratchett’s writing! I love the humor and the wit. The fact that this story centers around a girl who is determined to become the world’s first female wizard is certainly making this an interesting read. Esk is such a great character and I can’t wait to watch her kick the patriarchy’s butt.

Current Reads

  • Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid: Not gonna lie, I only picked this book because it’s a book of the month pick for one of my Goodreads groups. Nothing about the synopsis really appealed to me because it sounded like it was just going to be a story of rich people making terrible decisions. Which… it kind of is, but it’s more so a story about family and familial bonds. And I’m kind of loving it!
  • Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert: I started this book yesterday and stayed up way too late because I did not want to stop! I loved the other books in the Brown Sisters series, but this book? This book is top-tier, chef’s kiss, cannot be beat. Eve and Jacob? Jacob and Eve?! I adore them so much and I want nothing but wonderful things for these precious beans. I’m currently deep enough into the book that I am dreading the probable third act breakup because why can’t they just be happy?! I mean… I know they will be in the end, but why can’t they be noooow 😭

Current Reads

  • The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde: I’m gonna be honest and say that I had only the vaguest sense of what this classic was about before I started reading it. I knew that there is a painting that takes on the sins of it’s subject, Dorian Gray. I wasn’t prepared for how terrible Dorian actually is throughout the story! Like… why is anyone friends with this man?! Well, I know why… because he’s rich and handsome. But dear lord, he sucks! Suffice it to say, I’m having a great time reading about this terrible person 😂
  • Ariadne by Jennifer Saint: Dipping back into Greek mythology retellings with this one and, so far, I’m really enjoying it! I want to fight some people (LOOKING AT YOU, THESEUS) and loads of poor decisions have been made, but I’m liking how we get to see more of who Ariadne is beyond her part in Theseus’ tale. I’m already wishing that this book was a little longer because I would have loved to spend more time with Ariadne when Asterion was a baby. I’m intrigued by their relationship, but it’s a blip in this story. Still, this book is scratching that mythology retelling itch and I’m enjoying it!

Current Reads

  • Juniper & Thorn by Ava Reid: I started this gothic horror a few days ago and, so far, it has me hooked! I’m taking my time reading it because this feels like a story that you need to settle into. No rushing through the pages with this one and I’m perfectly okay with that! It lets me enjoy the beautiful writing and the interesting setting. Current vibes? I feel like I’m gonna love this.
  • Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes: I just started this last night and I stayed up way past my bedtime because I just wanted to keep reading. The synopsis instantly made me think “Dead Space in book form” and, so far, that is absolutely true. And I ain’t mad about it! This is perfectly creepy and I’m loving that were flashing from the present to the past when the events of the book actually take place. The spooky vibes are incredible and I can’t wait to continue reading.

Current Reads

  • Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse: I’ve finally started my most anticipated read of the year and, so far, I’m loving it! It’s just as gripping as the first installment, though I do find myself rolling my eyes already when I come to certain POVs. I gotta give them a chance! I’m hoping to love this one as much as I loved Black Sun. It seems promising so far!
  • The Witch’s Heart by Genevieve Gornichec: I’ve only read the first chapter or so of this fantasy, but I’m already enjoying the Norse vibes. I can’t say much else about this yet as I haven’t gotten a real feel for it. So far, it’s caught my interest and makes me want to read more, so that’s good! Here’s hoping it continues to be as interesting as it is right now.

Current Reads

  • Son of Shadow by John Lenahan: I’m reading this because I’m participating in a blog tour hosted by The Write Reads. So far, it’s quite the interesting story! This book follows after the events of a completed trilogy that I definitely haven’t read and I feel so far behind because of that. I do appreciate the writer having a synopsis of the events of the first trilogy at the beginning of the book, though! I’m still feeling a little lost, but I’m loving the characters and the plot is engaging. Check back tomorrow for my full review!
  • The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov: I’m reading this book for a reading challenge I’m doing on Goodreads. I had heard nothing about this before it was picked as a book of the month! So far, I am both thoroughly amused and thoroughly confused. More so confused because WTF is happening in this book, Mikhail?! Still, it is quite funny and satirical, so I’m having a good time. No thoughts, just vibes right now 😂

Current Reads

  • Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan: I had checked this book out from the library but never got around to picking it up. So, when I was looking for a new audiobook to read and this one popped up on Scribd, I instantly downloaded it! So far, I’m really loving the tone of this story. It is beautifully written and evocative, making me feel like I’m in the book alongside the characters. Our main character, Xingyin, is fascinating and I can’t wait to continue her story.
  • The Book of Cold Cases by Simone St. James: I’m finally reading a Simone St. James book! I’ve been wanting to try a thriller by her for awhile now. I have quite literally just started this one (I’m on, like… page 5) so I have no opinions about the book either way. I’m not actively hating it, so… so far, so good!

Current Reads

  • The A.B.C. Murders by Agatha Christie: I’m continuing on my Poirot reading and, so far, this has been one of the more interesting ones. I’ve only just begun, but I’m loving the mystery in this! I’m also loving that Hastings is back. He may be completely obtuse, but he’s my favorite, haha. The friendship between Poirot and Hastings is one of my favorite things in these books, so I always miss Hastings when he’s not around. Anyways, I’m really enjoying this one so far.
  • The Merciless Ones by Namina Forna: I’ve started in on one of my most anticipated reads of the year and, so far, it’s living up to expectations. Of course, I’m only a few chapters in, but this is just as cinematic and vivid as the first one! I feel like this book is going to contain a bit more action than the first since, ya know, there’s a war going on and I am ready for it. I’m excited to see how this one turns out.

Current Reads

  • The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake: This book snuck its way onto my radar after it seemed like everyone in the bookish community was talking about it. I know little about it other than it’s dark academia and it was originally self-published. It’s the story of six magically gifted people competing for a chance to join the Alexandrian Society, who holds all the secret knowledge supposedly lost in the great fire that burned down the Library of Alexandria. Unfortunately, there are only five spots available and it’s heavily hinted that whoever doesn’t get a spot also doesn’t get out alive. I’m enjoying the story, so far, though I’m not too far in. There’s a lot of characters to get used to, but I’m loving it!
  • The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa: I’m reading this book for a group I’m in on Goodreads. It’s one of the Book of the Month selections, which I was happy about because I’ve been curious about this book for awhile. I do love a multiple POV novel and, in this one, we get the POV of a cat, as well! So far, this is such a sweet and cozy story, but it’s hinting at something that I know is going to destroy me later. We’re following a man named Satoru and his beloved cat, Nana, as they travel around trying to find someone that will take Nana into their home. I’m suspicious that, whatever reason Satoru has for giving up a cat he clearly loves, is going to make me a mess. Will it make me cry? Stay tuned, haha.
