Itโ€™s time for another WWW Wednesday! This is a bookish meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words where bloggers answer the 3 Ws:

  1. What are you currently reading?
  2. What did you recently finish reading?
  3. What do you think youโ€™ll read next?

If youโ€™d like to learn more about any of these books, click on the cover to be taken to the Goodreads page.

Current Reads

  • Malice by Heather Walker: I’ve finally started this dark fairytale retelling and I’m already invested in what happens to Alyce. This book has a lot going for it! The plot is intriguing, I’m liking the tone, and the writing is fantastic so far. I’m eager to get more into the story.
  • Redemptor by Jordan Ifueko: That’s right! I’m finally reading my most anticipated book of 2021! No pressure, right? It certainly has started off with a bang and it’s great to see all this characters I love so much again. I expect I’ll tear through this one in no time, lol.

Recently Finished

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
  • The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo: Uuuummm, this novella was incredible! And makes me want to read more by Nghi Vo! This was lyrical, mystical, and beautifully sad. I loved the characters. I could read an entire book of Rabbit telling stories, tbh. This was a breath of fresh air and I can’t wait to continue with the series!
  • A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers: Two five star reads pretty much back to back and they’re both novellas! This is a sci-fi novella featuring two of my new favorite characters: a tea monk named Dex and the robot they run into in the wilderness, Mosscap. I would fight for both of them and I’ve only just met them, lol. Thankfully, this is the first book in a new series which means I get more of these amazing characters!

What’s Next

  • The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune: That’s right, I’ll be picking up on of the most hyped books of this year next. I’m really excited to read this one as it features one of my favorite tropes: found family. Which is why I’m using it for that challenge in the Trope-ical Readathon, lol. I’m also eager to get to this because I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about it!
  • Fireborn by Aisling Fowler: I’m reading this one for a The Write Reads blog tour. Much like the previous book, I’ve heard nothing but great things about it! So much so that, even if I wasn’t on the tour, I would want to pick it up soon, lol. It’s a middle grade that is promising a lot of action and some โœจmagicโœจ, so I can’t wait! Also, how beautiful is that cover, right?

#5OnMyTBR – Science

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunterโ€™s Nook where you chose five books from your to-be-read pile that fit that weekโ€™s theme. If youโ€™d like more info, head over to the announcement post!

Hello, reader!

It’s been awhile since I’ve done a 5 On My TBR, so I figured it was about time I brought it back. The topic this week is science and I’m interpreting this one in a couple of ways. I have a mixture of science fiction and and non-fiction centered around science and they’re all books that I can’t wait to read!

Now it’s time to see what’s on my list.

#1. The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

One day, I am going to finally read the Broken Earth trilogy. One day!

This series, and this book in particular, has been on my TBR for forever. It sounds like a science fiction novel that would be right up my alley. Something that focuses on the characters and their struggles but also has incredible world-building. I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about this book, which is why I’m so excited to pick it up! Now I just gotta squeeze it onto a monthly TBR, lol.

#2. Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly

I’ve wanted to read this book ever since I heard about the movie. Which is kind of funny because I haven’t seen the movie, either ๐Ÿ˜… But a book that tells the true tale of the Black women who helped make NASA what it is? Yes, please! This sounds like one of those non-fiction books that won’t read like a textbook. Those are the ones I can just eat up! I’m looking forward to getting to this one… eventually.

#3. Kindred by Octavia Butler

I’ve been wanting to dip my toe into Octavia Butler’s books for a long time. I figured, why not start with one of her more popular sci-fis?

The subject matter of this story promises to pack quite a punch, so I feel like I need to be in a good mindset for it. But it also sounds likes it’s going to be absolutely amazing. I do love a bit of historical fiction, too, so here’s hoping I love this one, too.

The Bookworm’s Book Tag

Hello, reader!

Today on the blog, I’ll be doing another fun, bookish tag! Tags are some of my favorite posts to do and I’m glad I’m finally starting to catch up on them. I’m excited to bring to you The Bookworm’s Tag, which looks like it’s gonna be a blast. I was tagged by the lovely Livy @ Shelves of Starlight. She runs a fantastic bookish blog, so you should definitely go check it out! Thank you so much for the tag, Livy! Sorry it took me forver to get to it ๐Ÿ˜… This tag was originally created by Jehosheba @ Rambling Reviews.

Alright, let’s get to the questions!

The Rules:

  1. Thank and link the blogger who nominated you
  2. Include the tag graphic in your post
  3. Answer the 10 questions the blogger asked
  4. Nominate 5-10 bloggers
  5. Ask you nominees 10 book related questions
  6. Donโ€™t feel bound to these rules
  7. Have fun!

Livy’s Questions:

Where is your favourite place to read?

Currently? The recliner in our living room. I can play an ambiance video on YouTube, cuddle with the cats, and keep an eye on our youngest all at the same time, lol. If I’m reading a book where I don’t want to be too distracted, I’ll read up in my little office or on the bed or, if the weather is agreeable, on the back porch. Those are my go-to spots!

What has been your favourite book so far this year?

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse! Hands down! Will I shut up about this book any time soon?

Probably not.

But that’s only what it deserves! This is a vivid and lush story set in ancient Mesoamerica that will have you completely wrapped up in its world. The world-building? Top shelf! The characters? Compelling! The… everything?! EPIC!

Seriously, I loved this book and I want more people to love it too. If you haven’t read it yet (especially if you’re a fan of fantasy), I’m begging you to give it a try!

Which book are you excited to read in the second half of the year?

Is anyone surprised by this?

Redemptor by Jordan Ifueko is my most anticipated book of 2021, so of course it’s the book I’m most excited to read in the second half of the year! This is the sequel to Raybearer, my favorite book of 2020, and I’m both stoked to read it and a little nervous. This is the problem with loving the first book in a series…. what if I don’t love the subsequent books as much?

There is also the fact that this is the last book in the series. I don’t know if I’m ready to say goodbye to Tarisai and the world of Aritsar. Still, I’ll be reading this book in August and I cannot wait!

First Lines Friday #17

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?  If you want to make your own post, feel free to use or edit the banner above, and follow the rules below:

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but donโ€™t give anything else about the book away just yet โ€“ you need to hook the reader first
  • Finallyโ€ฆ reveal the book!

If youโ€™re using Twitter, donโ€™t forget to use #FirstLinesFridays!

Hello, reader!

Happy Friday! I can’t tell you how excited I am that it’s finally the end of the week. It’s been super busy at work and ya girl is T I R E D. But now I can look forward to two days to just relax and garden and read. Ugh, it sounds fantastic.

But! That’s neither here nor there. Right now, it’s time for First Lines Friday! Today, I’m featuring a book that I’d been curious about for awhile and was happy to snag a copy from my library recently. I’ve been seeing it all over the bookish internet and my curiosity has just grown! I’m currently in the middle of it and it’s definitely living up to the hype. So now it’s time to share the first few lines and a few hints and see if I can get you hooked, as well.

The Line(s):

“Something wants to eat you,” called Almost Brilliant from her perch in a nearby tree, “and I shall not be sorry if it does.”
Chiming bells. Chih rolled to their feet, glancing around the perimeter and squinting at the jangling string of bells that surrounded the small campsite. For a moment, they were back at the abbey in Singing Hills, late for another round of prayers, chores, and lessons, but Singing Hills did not smell of ghosts and damp pine boughs. Singing Hills did not make the hairs on Chih’s arms rise up in alarm or their heart lurch with panic.”

The Hints:

This is a fantasy novella that was released last year.

It’s the first book in a series of fantasy novellas.

It’s set in an empire reminiscent of imperial China.

The Reveal:

Goodreads Synopsis

“A young royal from the far north is sent south for a political marriage in an empire reminiscent of imperial China. Her brothers are dead, her armies and their war mammoths long defeated and caged behind their borders. Alone and sometimes reviled, she must choose her allies carefully.

Rabbit, a handmaiden, sold by her parents to the palace for the lack of five baskets of dye, befriends the emperor’s lonely new wife and gets more than she bargained for.

At once feminist high fantasy and an indictment of monarchy, this evocative debut follows the rise of the empress In-yo, who has few resources and fewer friends. She’s a northern daughter in a mage-made summer exile, but she will bend history to her will and bring down her enemies, piece by piece.”

Did those first few lines capture your attention? Did they make you want to read the rest of the story? Let me know in the comments!

And, as always, happy reading!

Current Reads

  • Changeling by Matt Wesolowski: The Six Stories readalong continues! I’ve literally just started this one today and I’m already getting sucked into the story. I already had this one on my Kindle, but I’m really eyeing the audiobook ๐Ÿ‘€ I just keep hearing such great things about it! Maybe for book four… Anyways, I’m excited to get more into this one and see where it leads.
  • The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo: And then we have a book that’s not even on my TBR for this month, lol. What can I say, I saw it at the library, it’s super short, and one of the librarians said it was awesome. How could I not check it out?? I’ve read just a few pages, so I don’t have any real impressions as of yet, but I’m hoping I’ll love it.

July 2021 Wrap Up

Hello, reader!

We’ve made it to a new month, which means it’s time to wrap up my reading for the last month! July both flew and dragged by and, though I’m happy we’ve moved on the August, I’m also shocked that it’s already the eighth month of the year. I will say, though, that July was definitely a much better reading month than June! I ended up reading 11 books and I found myself really enjoying all of them! I also got away from the weird reading mood I had been in all of June. I think the fact that I was, for the most part, reading whatever I wanted certainly helped with that. I even picked up a couple books that weren’t for blog tours or buddy reads!

But enough rambling. Let’s take a look at what I got to read in the month of July.

Books Read

Book: Foxglove Summer by Ben Aaronovitch

Rating: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Thoughts: My Rivers of London readalong with some of the TWR gang continues! This was the most recent full-length novel I read in the series since we’ve started diving into the graphic novels and novellas. I really liked it, though I wish there had been more Nightingale. What can I say? He’s my favorite! Still, this was a solid addition to the series.

Book: Rivers of London: Night Witch by Ben Aaronovitch

Rating: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Thoughts: Speaking of Rivers of London graphic novels, this was the next book I completed in July. Though I found myself not loving this one as much as Body Work, I still had a fun time with it. The story just felt a bit disjointed, but, once I got into the flow, I enjoyed the ride. Also, it was interesting learning a bit more about a certain Night Witch.

Book: Gargantis by Thomas Taylor

Rating: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Thoughts: Aaahh, I loved this book!! I honestly can’t decide whether I enjoyed this one more than the first book in the series, Malamander. It was such a fun, eerie, exciting read and it made me anxious to snatch up the third book once it comes out. I need more Herbie and Violet adventures!

readathon

Trope-ical Readathon TBR: Round Five

Hello, reader!

As you’ve probably noticed, I’m not usually one to do a monthly TBR. One of the few exceptions to this rule is when I’m participating in a month-long readathon. And one of my favorite readathons happens to be having a round in August! That’s why today’s post is going to be all about my Trope-ical Readathon TBR!

So what is this readathon all about? As I’m sure you can probably guess from the name, it’s where you read books that feature certain tropes. Ya know, like “The Chosen One” or, one of my faves, “found family”. This is a competitive readathon, so the books you read count for a certain amount of points and there are different teams representing a variety of genres. I’m bad at describing the rules, so you can read all about them here!

I had a tough time choosing my team this round because I always tell myself I should rep my fave genre (Team Fantasy!), but I’ve been on the same team the last two times I participated in the Trope-ical Readathon (Team Mystery/Horror/Thriller!). I do love my fantasy, but, once again, I went with the spooky team, lol. Now, there are different challenges for each individual team as well as a group of general challenges for all to enjoy. As I’m not 100% sure I can get through over ten books in one month, I’ve chosen to focus on the team challenges and sprinkle in a couple of books for the general challenges. I have picked a book for each challenge, but we all know I’m not getting to all of them ๐Ÿ˜‚

Alright, now it’s time to show what I’m actually planning to read!

Team Mystery/Horror/Thriller Challenges

As I mentioned, I’m mainly focusing on the challenges for my team. Here are the three books I’ll be reading to accomplish them!

Team Book

The Taking of Jake Livingston by Ryan Douglass

I can’t express how much I’m excited to read this book! As soon as I saw it as one of the team book choices for Team M/H/T, I knew I was going to be participating this round, lol. I’ve heard nothing but great things about this book and I’ve been craving some more horror in my life. I’ve also not really delved into YA horror, so I’m eager to give this one a go!

“Is It Supernatural?”

Wicked Little Deeds by Kat Ellis

This challenge is focusing on the trope of the characters (and the readers) not knowing if whatever is causing spooky happenings is an actual supernatural baddie or just a Scooby Doo villain. I’m not 100% sure this book counts, but the synopsis does say that our main character starts to wonder if “the local legends are true”, so I think that counts! I’m reading this book for a The Write Reads blog tour and I can’t wait!

“Locked Room Mystery”

The Guest List by Lucy Foley

I’ve been wanting to read something by Lucy Foley for a long time, so I thought this was the perfect time! I suppose this is less of a “locked room” and more of a “stuck on island” mystery, but it counts. The premise makes me think of And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, which is my favorite Christie, so I’m hoping to love it. And, if I do, I have a new mystery author to explore!
