#5OnMyTBR – Classics

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook where you chose five books from your to-be-read pile that fit that week’s theme. If you’d like more info, head over to the announcement post!

Hello, reader!

It’s another Monday and time for another 5 On My TBR! This week’s theme is calling me out a wee bit. It’s all about classics and I have such a hit or miss relationship with those, hence why I have so many on my TBR. At some point, I should really go through and remove the ones I just know I’m never going to read. Too many books, too little time, ya know?

Either way, I have picked five that I do really want to read sooner rather than later, so let me share them with you now!

#1. Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy

I’ve read a couple of books by Thomas Hardy and found that I quite enjoyed both of them. That’s how this book first found it’s way on to my TBR. When I find a classics author whose writing doesn’t make my eyes roll into the back of my head, I tend to stick with them, lol. I also enjoy how this author writes women in the context of the time period where he was writing. I’m eager to give this one a go!

#2. Kindred by Octavia E. Butler

It’s honestly embarrassing that I haven’t read this Black classic sci-fi yet. I think my hesitancy comes in two parts. I’m sure this is going to deal with Black trauma quite heavily and I gotta be in the right headspace to read that. And I did read a different Octavia E. Butler and… wasn’t a huge fan. Though I think that was mostly due to the audiobook narrator. Either way, I still want to pick this one up eventually.

#3. The Neverending Story by Michael Ende

I’ve wanted to read this book since I found out it existed! Like most kids who grew up in the 80s/90s, I loved the movie version of this book. I didn’t know it was an actually book until well into adulthood, though! I’m excited to read the source material for one of my favorite childhood films. It’ll be interesting to see which one I enjoy more.

#4. The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

This horror classic has been on my TBR for so long, y’all. The only thing I’ve read by Shirley Jackson is her short story, The Lottery, but I loved it! The tension it that could be cut with a knife and it was one of the first truly unnerving things I read as a kid. I’ve wanted to read more of her work for quite awhile but it just never seems to happen, haha. Now I’m deciding to make it a priority!

#5. The Complete Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

I’ve always been a fan of mystery stories, but I’ve yet to read any of the stories of one of the original fictional detectives. Sherlock Holmes is such an intriguing character and I want to learn more about him from the source! I have the first volume of Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective’s stories and I want to pick it up soon! Then, if I like the first volume, I can hunt down the next.

What are some classics that are on your TBR? Have you read any of the books on mine? Let me know in the comments!

And, as always, happy reading!

  1. The Neverending Story was required summer reading for me going into 9th grade. I don’t remember much of the source material, but the movie is still stuck in my brain. My husband and I actually watched it a few months ago since it’d been such a long time since we’d last seen it. What a classic.

  2. Oh, that reminds me that I always wanted to read the English translation of Die unendliche Geschichte. Therefore, I should take a note to check for The Neverending Story in my local bookstore. 😊
