Meet the Book Blogger Take Two

Hello, reader!

Today felt like a good day for a book tag, so I thought I’d bring you the Meet the Blogger Book Tag version 2.0! I did this tag awhile back, but the questions were completely different. So now I’m gonna do this new version because it looks like fun and I was tagged by the wonderful Danni @ _ForBooksSake! You should definitely check out her blog if you’re looking for that good, bookish content and especially if you like a good thriller. Danni knows her stuff ๐Ÿ˜Š

Alright, let’s get to the post!

The Rules:

  • Thank the blogger who tagged you (Thank you, Danni!)
  • Mention the creator Lauren @ย Lalaโ€™s Book Reviews
  • Tag as many (or as few) people as youโ€™d like
  • Have fun and get to know one another!

Introduction:

Introduce yourself!

Hello again, reader! I’m Kerri and I wear a lot of hats outside of the blogging world. I work as a medical laboratory scientist in microbiology and molecular which is both a lot of fun and a lot of work. I’m a mom to a 15 year old and an 8 year old which certainly keeps life interesting. I’ve been married to my husband for almost nine years (the mind, it boggles!) and I can’t imagine life without my weird, loving family.

Something most everyone wants to knowโ€ฆdo you have any pets?

Of course! We have three cats; Felicia (our void kitty), Nelson (our grey boi), and Marmalade (our smooth-brained orange laddie). Our most recent addition is our pup-pup, Aspen, who is very much a mutt, but mostly lab… we think.

What is your favourite thing to drink?

I suppose my go-to beverage is boring, ol’ water because the military drilled the importance of staying hydrated into me. My favorite “treat yo self” beverage has to be hot chocolate! Preferably french vanilla hot chocolate ๐Ÿ˜‹

What is your favourite season?

Spring and Summer! Basically whenever it’s warm because I live in New England and I hate being cold, lol. I also love when the plants and animals start to bloom/re-emerge after Winter. And I hate Winter so much I’m happy to see its backside. Winter is the WORST.

Do you have any special talents?

Err… not really? I do have a good singing voice and was in an All-State choir you had to be specially picked for when I was in fifth grade. I miss being in choir, honestly, which is probably why I randomly sing all. the. time. Seriously, you follow me around for a couple minutes and you’ll probably hear me sing ๐Ÿ˜‚

Blogging:

When and why did you start your blog?

I wrote my first post in August of 2019, but I didn’t truly start blogging until around November of that year. Something like that! It took me a moment to gather my courage to actually start blogging for real. As for the why, I wanted some place where I could completely geek out about books and be among similarly minded people. Reading has always been my preferred hobby, but I really didn’t have anyone to talk to about it at length like I wanted to. Thus my blog came into being!

What is something that you wish you knew about blogging when you first started?

That, no matter how much I want to, I cannot do ALL the blog tours/review requests! When I first started, I tried to sign up for every, little tour I could and I tried to accommodate every review request that came my way. And I burned myself out super fast. I had to pull back within a few months because this thing I had created for fun was starting to feel like a chore. I certainly didn’t want that! There are still moments when I overbook (haaaaaaaa!) myself, but I’ve gotten better at keeping a good balance.

What has been the hardest part about blogging?

For sure making myself a blogging schedule and sticking to it. I still don’t have a schedule I’m happy with, though I am pretty proud of the fact that I have posted at least once a day since the beginning of 2022. That’s the goal, but I want to get to the point where I also have a day dedicated to blogging where I can write my posts for the week and schedule them. That way I don’t feel so stressed out during the week when I have work and chores and tons of other stuff to worry about. I will get there one day!

What has been the most rewarding part of blogging?

Oh definitely the friends I’ve made and the bookish community! This is absolutely my favorite corner of the internet and I’ve met some of the best people because of my blog. I’m so glad to have these awesome folks in my life.

Do you write your posts ahead of time or write them the day of posting?

Heh, I was just talking about this ๐Ÿ˜… I try to write my posts ahead of the day that I want them to go up. Mostly because I’m usually pretty tired after getting home from work and it can take extra motivation to sit and write. That doesn’t always happen, though, so there are plenty of times I write posts the same day I post them. I’m hoping to get to a place where I can consistently schedule posts! Perhaps when life in general is less chaotic.

Reading:

Who are your top 5 favourite authors?

Oof, this is a tough one. Umm… this is subject to change and in no particular order, but we’ll go with:

  • Jordan Ifueko
  • Margaret Owen
  • Erin Morgenstern
  • Angie Thomas
  • V.E. Schwab

What genre do you read the most?

Most definitely fantasy! Fantasy will always be my first and one true love โค

What genre surprised youย by how much you love it?

Probably romance. I mean, I didn’t think I was going t absolutely hate romance, but I’m surprised at how much I’ve loved the ones I picked up so far. I should have explored this genre ages ago!

Which popular book didnโ€™t live up to the hype for you?

Sigh… the answer right now has to be Witches Steeped in Gold. It pains me to say it, but I had a hard time getting into that one, so much so that I still haven’t finished it! I’ve heard it picks up later on in the book, but I just couldn’t motivate myself to continue. I’m hoping to pick it back up soon and re-attempt finishing it. Perhaps I’ll love it once I’ve actually read it.

Who are some popular authors you havenโ€™t read?

There are tons, haha. I think the big two are Sarah J. Maas and Cassandra Clare. I do want to try a book by SJM but I honestly have no interest in the Shadowhunter books.

What upcoming release are you excited to read?

I can barely contain my excitement for R.F. Kuang’s newest novel, Babel, or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators’ Revolution. And it’s not simply because I’m love with that long ass title ๐Ÿ˜‚ This sounds like the dark academia book of my dreams! I may have pre-ordered the shiny Waterstones edition as soon as the author posted about it because I couldn’t resist! I can’t wait to have this book in my hands.

Do you listen to music while reading?

Usually, no, but I can listen to music while reading. I do sometimes enjoy the experience of it, as well. It can’t have words, though. If it’s music that I can sing along to, I’m gonna start singing and then my book will be forgotten, haha. I’ve been known to put on a lo-fi channel and just vibe and read, though.

Where else can we find you online?

Current Reads

  • Highway of Tears by Jessica McDiarmid: Yup, I’m still reading this non-fiction. Don’t worry, though… I’m not taking awhile with this one because I don’t like it. On the contrary, I’m finding it fascinating! Heartbreaking, yet fascinating. And I think that’s why I’m taking my time with it. I want to absorb all the information this book has to offer on the struggles First Nations women and girls have to deal with simply because of who they are. It’s a topic I know only a little about and I want to expand my knowledge. This book does it in a way that is both respectful to the victims and doesn’t feel like I’m sitting in a lecture. I’m really enjoying it, so far.
  • Witchlings by Claribel A. Ortega: I finally started one of my most anticipated reads of the year and, so far, it’s just as magical as I was imagining! I’m only a few pages in, but there’s already a toad named Edgar Allan Toad and Seven is utterly endearing. I can’t wait to continue!

#5OnMyTBR – Duologies I Need To Finish

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunterโ€™s Nook where you chose five books from your to-be-read pile that fit that weekโ€™s theme. If youโ€™d like more info, head over to the announcement post!

Hello, reader!

Happy Monday to you all! Today is a very special 5 On My TBR. Why? Because it’s the 2 year anniversary of this wonderful, bookish meme! The theme this week is a freebie, so, to celebrate a whole 2 years of 5 On My TBR, I figured I would talk about some duologies that I need to finish. Not to say that there are only five still on my TBR buuuuut we’ll not talk about that ๐Ÿ˜‚

Alright, let’s get to the list!

#1. A Psalm of Storms and Silence by Roseanne A. Brown

This is one of the newer duologies on my TBR and one I’m very eager to continue. A Song of Wraiths and Ruin was one of my favorite reads last year! It has a tense plot that is built around a gorgeous world and fantastic characters. Karina and Malik are fascinating to watch as they navigate all the dangers throughout this story. And I need to know whether or not they’re gonna be okay! Also, the covers are just incredible ๐Ÿ˜

#2. Unravel the Dusk by Elizabeth Lim

Here’s another sequel that I’m eager to read and just keep putting off, heh. I had such a great time reading Spin the Dawn! It’s an engaging read that pulls you into the fantasy world that Elizabeth Lim has created. I loved the quest, the contest, and all the intriguing aspects of the story. So I’m not sure why it’s taken me so long to pick this one up! I feel like Unravel the Dusk is going to be just as good as the first one, so I really need to prioritize picking it up.

Mini Reviews: Recent Reads Edition

Hello, reader!

Because of who I am as a person, I am, once again, behind on reviews. I thought I’d take a moment to catch up with another edition of my mini reviews! This time, I’m focusing on three recent reads that I still need to put thought to paper (or keyboard) for since finishing them. These books are an eclectic mix, so there might be a little something for everyone here, haha.

That being said, let’s get to the reviews!

Well, this was certainly… a book. With words. Lots of five dollar words that seemed a tad bit unnecessary, if I’m honest.

At the heart of this story is a ghostly tale of love and betrayal. Unfortunately, the ghost story is not the focus of this novel. I say “unfortunately” because the ghost/ghost story was the best part about this book! The focus, however, is on a bunch of the most unlikeable characters I’ve come across in awhile. I’m not saying I can’t enjoy a book that has unlikeable characters, but these characters came across as caricatures of their unlikeable traits. They all fell incredibly flat for me which, when the whole book is centered around them, didn’t make for an enjoyable experience.

However, where this book shined was in the atmospheric writing and the beautifully creepy ghostly elements. There are some gruesome scenes in this book that fix themselves in your mind as you’re reading with the way they are written. Definitely check trigger warnings before getting into this one! This author has an incredible talent for building tension and setting the tone of a horror novel. As I mentioned, if we had more of that and less a bunch of horrible people being horrible to each other, I probably would have enjoyed this a lot more.

BBNYA Finalist Blog Tour: Our Bloody Pearl by D.N. Bryn

Hello, reader!

Iโ€™ve got yet another blog tour for you today, this one featuring one of the 10 finalists from last yearโ€™sย Book Bloggers Novel of the Year Awardย (BBNYA)! I got to read Our Bloody Pearl by D.N. Bryn as a 2021 panelist and absolutely fell in love with the book! Finding new favorites is one of the many reasons I love being a BBNYA panelist. This diverse fantasy was fast-paced, spell-binding, and so much fun. But, before I get into my tour stop, let me tell you more about BBNYA.

BBNYA is a yearly competition where Book Bloggers from all over the world read and score books written by indie authors. If you are an author and wish to learn more about the BBNYA competition, you can visit the official website www.bbnya.com or twitter @bbnya_official.

The sign-ups will soon be open for the 2022 BBNYA competition, be it for authors to enter their books, or for bloggers wanting to be part of the new panel, so keep your eyes peeled!!

As a note, I received this book to read and review as part of the 2021 BBNYA tours organised by the TWR Tour team. All opinions are my own, unbiased and honest. Now, letโ€™s get into the post!

Synopsis

The ocean is uncontrollable and dangerous. But to the sirens who swim the warm island waters, itโ€™s a home more than worth protecting from the humans and their steam-propelled ships. Between their hypnotic voices and the strength of their powerful tails, sirens have little to fear.

That is, until the ruthless pirate captain, Kian, creates a device to cancel out their songs.

Perle was the first siren captured, and while all since have either been sold or killed, Kian still keeps them prisoner. Though their song is muted and their tail paralyzed, Perleโ€™s hope for escape rekindles as another pirating vessel seizes Kianโ€™s ship. This new captain seems different, with his brilliant smile and his promises that Kian will never again be Perleโ€™s master. But heโ€™s still a human, and a captor in his own way. The compassion he and his rag-tag human family show canโ€™t be sincereโ€ฆ or can it?

Soon it becomes clear that Kian will hunt Perle relentlessly, taking down any siren in her path. As the tides turn, Perle must decide whether to run from Kian forever, or ride the forming wave into battle, hoping their newfound human companions will fight with them.

This adult fantasy novel featuring an nonbinary disabled protagonist is a voyage of laughter and danger where friendships and love abound and sirens are sure to stealโ€”or eatโ€”your heart.

Trigger warnings: mild gore due to carnivorous sirens and sensations of drowning.

Down the TBR Hole #27

Itโ€™s time for a new round of Down the TBR Hole! This is where I go through my Goodreads โ€˜Want to Readโ€™ shelf and do a bit of cleaning up. If you want to see the full description of what this post is all about, check out my first round HERE.

Hello, reader!

Today feels like a good day to do another round of Down the TBR Hole! I’m pretty impressed with my restraint this time around, as well. After ending last round with a whooping 732 books on my Goodreads Want to Read shelf, I’m starting this one with 733 books!. The fact that I’ve only added one book to the TBR in the last week or so is shocking ๐Ÿ˜‚

Still, the goal is to make this TBR reflect books I actually want to read, so let’s see if we trim so more of the list this time.

Malice by John Gwynne

I’ve been curious about John Gwynne for awhile now. He seems to be one of those big names in fantasy and I want to check him out! I’ve heard good things about this series and, even though I’m intimidated by the size of these novels, I do want to read them. Eventually.

Verdict: Keep

Everwild by Neal Shusterman

I read the first book in this series awhile ago and remember enjoying it. It follows two children that die and find themselves in limbo. It was an interesting read, so I stuck the sequel on my TBR, fully planning to continue. And, clearly, that never happened. Since reading the first one, my interest in this book and series has dropped. I think it’s time to say goodbye.

Verdict: Remove

Hunger by Roxane Gay

Roxane Gay is another author I’ve been wanting to try for awhile. I own this memoir, I’m eager to read it, but I always seem to let it sit on the TBR. Probably because it’s non-fiction and that’s just not a genre I gravitate towards. But I am going to read this and I’m gonna do it soon!

Verdict: Keep

Current Reads

  • Highway of Tears by Jessica McDiarmid: I’ve just started this non-fiction about missing and murdered Indigenous women, so I don’t have a true feeling for how I’m liking it. So far, I’m liking the tone of the story. It doesn’t read like a textbook, which is something I’m always worried about when going into a non-fiction book! As predicted, I’m already angry about the injustices that have been highlighted so far. Initial thoughts? I’m going to love this and also want to fight people after reading it.
  • The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi: I have read a page of this so I truly have no thoughts yet. I’m picking it up for the various readathons I’m participating in this week/month! It’s been on my TBR for what feels like forever and I’m excited to finally give this heist story a shot!
