Two Twisted Crowns by Rachel Gillig

Unlike my last update involving this book, I’m not longer barely into it and I have thoughts! I think I may be enjoying the second installment in The Shepard King duology and I think I may love it more than I did One Dark Window. I’m only 50 or so pages away from the end and, as long as the conclusion isn’t complete trash, this is going to be a 4.5 star read at the very least. I was almost late coming back from lunch today because I did not want to stop reading!

Two Twisted Crowns by Rachel Gillig

I quite literally just picked up this book because I just finished my last physical read! That means I don’t have much to share about my feelings for the sequel to One Dark Window other than I’m happy to be back in this world. There’s something about the winter time that lends itself to a nice, gothic atmosphere and this book certainly has that in spades. I’m hoping to love it as much as I did the first book. Fingers crossed for me!

Babylonia by Costanza Casati

I’m a slow reader, y’all, so I’m still making my way through this one. The start, though it definitely has exciting parts, is a bit slow, but I think it works with the kind of story that is being told. We’re really focusing in on two people, Semiramis and Ninus, and how they view the world and navigate through it. So far, it’s fascinating and, now that I’m deeper into the novel, it’s starting to get beautifully politically twisty, too. One of my favorite things!

  • Babylonia by Costanza Casati: I just started this historical fiction novel, but I can already tell I’m going to enjoy it. It starts with our main character grifting a man out of some gold in exchange for her helping to save his life. Get that coin, girl! I’m loving the writing style, the setting, and the interesting characters. I’m excited to keep reading! It seems like it’s going to bloody and political and right up my alley.
  • One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig: I’m re-reading this fantasy novel as a part of another Fable book club. I had forgotten how much I loved this story! The atmosphere, the characters, the hint of romance… it’s really scratching a lot of my itches. The audiobook is pretty great, as well, so I’m glad I decided to go that route with my re-read. I see myself reading the sequel in the very near future.

  • No One Can Know by Kate Alice Marshall: We’re beginning 2025 with some dark reads, y’all. I got this book from Book of the Month in December… of 2023, heh. One of my goals this year is to try and read down my BotM backlog so it seemed appropriate to kick my reading year off with one! I know nothing about this book because I like to go into mystery/thrillers that way. But I’ve read the first few chapters and, yup, this is gonna be dark. There’s already been blood and bodies! I’m loving the writing, so I’m excited to continue with this one.
  • The Indifferent Stars Above by Daniel James Brown: To get myself back into the reading groove, I’ve joined a couple of book clubs over on Fable. Also, I have a Fable account now, I guess, haha. I keep taste-testing all these reading trackers (my poor, neglected Storygraph…) because there has to be something better than Goodreads, right? Anyways, one of the book clubs I joined is called the Weirdo Book Club and this book is the pick for January. Didn’t think I’d start off the year reading a non-fiction but the fact that it’s about the Donner Party feels very me. Hmm… that’s a worrying statement 😂 So far, I’m loving the writing because it doesn’t read like a textbook.

  • Nine Tailed by Jayci Lee: I received an e-ARC for this romantasy that just came out this month. I figured I should stick it on my Trope-ical Readathon TBR so that I will read it before it has been over a year like some of my e-ARCs 😅 So far, I’m interested in the world but, be warned… here thar be insta-love. Like… the most instant of insta-love. I mean, the two leads did know each other for a long time, but they haven’t seen each other in eight years, they were never together previously (as far as I know), and they are currently investigating the male lead’s brother’s murder. Maybe not the time to be so dang thirsty? The world is intriguing enough that I’m willing to continue, but the relationship is a little ick for me at the moment.
  • Wundersmith by Jessica Townsend: I’m finally continuing the Nevermoor series! I’ve just started this book and I’ve already fallen back in love with the world that the author has created. I missed Morrigan and Jupiter and everyone in this magical series! I’m also interested to see how Morrigan gets on with her training at the Wunderous Society and with her mysterious powers. And Jupiter has somehow managed to already be awesome in the first 50 pages. I think this read is going to go very well, haha.

  • Role Playing by Cathy Yardley: I was randomly scrolling through my Kindle, trying to find an ebook to read, and this popped up. I’ve had it on my Kindle for awhile but just hadn’t read it yet. I decided to give it a whirl and I’m so glad that I did! This is a contemporary romance that features older love interests (late 40s-early 50s older!), who are both video game nerds, and it’s grumpy x sunshine where the woman is the grump. This romance was basically handcrafted for me to love, haha. So far, I’m really enjoying the banter and, much like Maggie (even if she won’t admit it), I would fight someone if they were mean to Aiden 😤 I’m loving this so far and I’m eager to continue.
  • Heartstopper Vol 5 by Alice Oseman: I’m finally reading the next installment in the Heartstopper series! It’s been a minute since I’ve checked in with Nick and Charlie, so I’m looking forward to getting more into the fifth volume of their story. I’ve only just started but, so far, this is just as adorable (and potentially heart-wrenching) as the other volumes. This graphic novel series will forever be a favorite, so I’m sure I’ll love this one.

  • Woe To Those Who Dwell On Earth by John Lynch: August is the month of readathons and my current reads reflect that. This is a short story collection I picked up solely because it was short, on Kindle Unlimited, and fit one of the Magical Readathon prompts, haha. It had good ratings, so I thought it was worth a go. So far, it is certainly creepy but don’t go into this book if you don’t get on with military fiction. I feel like I’m back in uniform reading this! Still, I’m enjoying it and it is a quick read, so far.
  • Belladonna by Adalyn Grace: This read is a triple whammy. It fulfills a prompt for both my Trope-ical Readathon TBR and my Magical Readathon TBR and is also on my 12 friends, 12 recommendations TBR! I’ve been meaning to read this since May and have finally cracked it open. Having done so, I’m kicking myself for not starting it sooner. It’s gothic and creepy and has freakin’ Death as a potential love interest. I’m only ten chapters in and I’m already hooked.

  • Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros: Okay, so the hype got me on this one. Well… that and it’s a book of the month pick for one of my Goodreads groups, haha. But that only made me pick this up sooner rather than later! I’m only a few chapters in but, so far, I find myself really engaged with the story. Does Violet read like she’s in her twenties? Not in the slightest. Am I still having a good time learning about this world and this school? Absolutely! I’m hoping the dragons come more into play as the novel goes on.
  • Soul of the Deep by Natasha Bowen: I’m finally attempting to finish this novel! I’ve only been reading since, like… March? Maybe even earlier this year 😅 I’m excited that I found the audiobook on Libby because I was not getting on with the e-book. Nothing wrong with it, it’s just that my eyes don’t handle e-books as well as they used to. I’m about 50% through the audiobook and, now that I’m immersed back into this world, I’m having a good time! I will say that it’s taken this long to feel fully wrapped in the story, but here’s hoping it will only go up from here.

  • 11/22/63 by Stephen King: I’ve been reading this book for… almost a month now. It’s a long one, I’ll give it that, but it’s mostly because portions of it feel like such a slog. I’m finding myself easily distracted by other books and that’s never a good sign. Is it a bad book? No. When the main purpose of the story is the focus (some random dude going back in time to stop the Kennedy assassination) I’m all in! It’s when it drifts into the subplots that I start getting bored. Either way, I will finish it… eventually 😅
  • The Fine Print by Lauren Asher: On the opposite side of the spectrum, I just started this book this morning and I’m already over halfway through! I’ve been curious about the Dreamland Billionaires series for quite some time and have checked this book out from the library more than once. I always ended up having to return it before I managed to pick it up. I finally broke through whatever mental block was stopping me and I’m so glad I gave this a chance! It’s the perfect steamy romance to indulge in on a lazy day off from work.
