October 2022 Wrap Up

Hello, reader!

It’s time for another monthly wrap up! I read the same amount of books in October as I did in September, though I felt like I was taking forever to read. October was also the month of buddy reads, so I was trying to break up my reading to keep pace with the readalongs. It worked better with some books than others ๐Ÿ˜‚ Still, it was a great month for spooky reads and books that got me into the fall/winter mood. I didn’t read anything under four stars, so I’m definitely counting it as a great reading month!

Now, let’s talk about all the books I managed to finish in October.

Books Read

  • The Midnight Guardians by Ross Montgomery: I was reading this as part of the Middle Grade Marvels buddy read in September. Clearly, it took me a wee bit longer since it’s in my October wrap up ๐Ÿ˜… This is through no fault of the book, though! This was an incredible read that had me hooked from the beginning. It just suffered because of my weird reading mood in September. This was a wonderful middle grade story about friendship and fighting for what’s right, even if it feels like everything is against you. The backdrop of this story is WWII and there is an air raid on London that is intricately detailed, so it can get a bit intense. Still, I had a great time with this book and really fell in love with the characters. โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…
  • The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones: I’ve read a few Stephen Graham Jones novels now and I think I’ve found my favorite, so far. This was such a dark, atmospheric, incredible book! The entity stalking the main characters in this book was suitably creepy and I loved the background story that was created for it. The fact that this is rooted in Blackfeet culture was interesting, as well. This was a frightening, engaging read and makes me want to read even more from this author! โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…
  • The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling: I read this book as part of a buddy read. I did not stick to the reading schedule, though, because, once I started reading, I couldn’t stop! This was such a fun, witchy romance that had me enthralled from page one. It was a quick, cute read and I was hardcore rooting for our main couple, Vivi and Rhys. I haven’t read many second chance romances, but if they’re all like this, I can see myself wanting more! I also love the town in which this was set. It was so cozy and gave the perfect Halloween vibes. I liked this book so much that I pretty much immediately picked up the next book in the series, which you’ll see later in this post, haha. โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…
  • The Legend of Black Jack by A.R. Witham: I read this fantasy novel as part of a tour hosted by The Write Reads. You can tell the author really thought about the world he created in this book a lot because the worldbuilding was top-notch! I was enchanted by this portal fantasy and found it easy to picture it all in my head. This book read like a movie, which is something I always love! I did feel like the ending was a bit rushed but, overall, this was such an engaging and enjoyable read. You can find my full review here. โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…
  • Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher: I’ve been hearing more and more about the author T. Kingfisher lately but I hadn’t read anything by her. I figured it was spooky season and this looked probably creepy, so I picked it up at the library. I’m so glad I did because I ended up loving this! It was a dark fairytale that starred all of the side characters that don’t usually get the spotlight. It was dark and funny and digs into some real world topics in a way that I very much enjoyed. And there’s a bone dog and a demon chicken! What more do you need, right? After this experience, I’m excited to give more of her books a try! โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…
  • The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley: Similarly to the last book, I’ve heard so much about Lucy Foley but had yet to pick up any of her books. I found this book on Scribd and figured, “Why not?” Again, I’m so glad I gave this a shot because I had a great time! This was a wonderfully atmospheric thriller that made me want to never go to Paris ๐Ÿ˜‚ The apartment building itself is almost a character of its own it has so much sinister personality. I wanted to strangle a good portion of the characters and I guessed a few of the twists, yet I still found myself on the edge of my seat, eager to read what was going to happen next. And I certainly didn’t see the ending coming! Again, now I’m excited to pick up more from this author. โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Down the TBR Hole #46

Itโ€™s time for a new round of Down the TBR Hole! This is where I go through my Goodreads โ€˜Want to Readโ€™ shelf and do a bit of cleaning up. If you want to see the full description of what this post is all about, check out my first round HERE.

Hello, reader!

Welcome to another round of TBR cleansing with a new Down the TBR Hole post! So my TBR has managed to grow by one book since my last round. I’m sitting at 686 books on my Want to Read shelf when I ended last round with 685 books! I mean, adding one more book to my TBR, in the grand scheme of things, is so incredibly minor. Especially when I already have such a ridiculous amount of books I want to read ๐Ÿ˜‚ Still, let’s see if I can trim it down a bit more.

Wish me luck!

Devolution by Max Brooks

I added this book solely because of how much I enjoyed another book by this author, World War Z. From what I can tell, this is written in the same style, telling the story through journals. It also revolves around the mystery of Bigfoot and some huge disaster that overtook a small town. Not gonna lie, it sounds incredible! So, of course, it gets to stick around.

Verdict: Keep

The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep by H.G. Parry

This book features one of my favorite tropes/genres ever. It’s a book about books! The main character has the ability to bring literary characters to life in the real world. Sounds like a great time, right? Well, not for Charley, who manages to let a few bad eggs loose in the city. I imagine this book is going to be such a fun time and I can’t wait to read it!

Verdict: Keep

Top 5 Tuesday: Books Set In The Past

Top 5 Tuesday is a fun, weekly meme that asks you to pick 5 books that fit that weekโ€™s theme. It was created byย Bionic Bookwormย and is currently being hosted byย Meeghan Reads. You should check out their wonderful blog for more details and the list of prompts!

Hello, reader!

I hope you’ve all had a lovely Tuesday. It was a busy day at work for me, so I’m ready to unwind, watch people talk about books on Youtube, and pick up a book of my own. First, though, it’s time for another Top 5 Tuesday post! Today, I get to talk about my top five books that are set in the past. I wasn’t sure how easy it would be to find five books that I love that are set in the past, but then I ended up with so many books from which to choose, haha. I’ve trimmed it down to my five favorites, though it was a tough decision to make.

Now, let me share them with you!

#1. The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi

This is a recent read that quickly stole my heart. It was vibrant and engaging, with incredible characters and even better writing! And it’s set in 1889 Paris, so it definitely belongs on this list. I loved this story so much. It has so many elements that I tend to gravitate towards: heists, morally grey characters, and, my fave, found family. I really need to continue with this series! Hopefully I’ll pick up the next book sooner rather than later.

#2. Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse

So I’m not 100% sure when this book takes place, but it is inspired by the pre-Columbian Americas and everything since pretty old school, so I’m saying it counts! Mostly because I just need an excuse to talk about this book at any opportunity ๐Ÿ˜‚ This book has magic, mystery, and some of the most compelling characters I’ve read in awhile. Xiala and Serapio will always be my favorites and that holds true in the sequel, as well. I cannot wait for the next book!

Current Reads

The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow

I know I talked about this book recently but I am still reading it. Because I overcommitted to buddy reads this month. Because all the books sounded SO GOOD! So far, I haven’t been disappointed, and that definitely holds true for this book. I’m loving the sisterly dynamics, the look into the suffragist struggle, and, of course, all the witchy stuff. I’m also loving Alix E. Harrow’s writing, which is unsurprising as much as I loved her first book, The Ten Thousand Doors of January.

Recently Finished

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The Kiss Curse by Erin Sterling

After devouring The Ex Hex, I was eager to pick up the next book in Erin Sterling’s witchy romance series. I’m glad I did because I may have enjoyed this one even more than the first! I loved Gwyn and Wells so much. Their dynamic was *chef’s kiss* and I could read several books about their future shenanigans. I also enjoyed the underlying mystery in this book, though I definitely guessed its resolution. I just love a good, magical mystery, apparently.

Top 5 Tuesday: Most Quotable Books

Top 5 Tuesday is a fun, weekly meme that asks you to pick 5 books that fit that weekโ€™s theme. It was created byย Bionic Bookwormย and is currently being hosted byย Meeghan Reads. You should check out their wonderful blog for more details and the list of prompts!

Hello, reader!

It’s time for another Top 5 Tuesday post! I’ve kind of been slacking on these this month because October was all about quotes. I can appreciate a beautiful line in a book, but I also have the memory of a hummingbird and, thus, don’t often remember them ๐Ÿ˜‚ Today’s topic, however, is one I could get behind because it doesn’t ask for specific quotes… it just ask what are your top five most quotable books. I have quite a few books that would be mostly tabs if I was an annotator. Now I’ve picked five that I think would be annotated the most.

That being said, let’s jump in!

#1. Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko

Look. This book was my 2020. I was obsessed with this when it came out! I’ve also re-read it more than any other book I own, save one. So not only are there so many quotes that I loved, but this is one of the few where I can actually remember a couple, haha. I have so many copies of this book that I have considered choosing one to annotate. It’s just that good, y’all, and there are definitely a lot of wonderful quotes that I want to revisit again and again.

#2. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Erin Morgenstern has exquisite writing. Every book I’ve read by her is an absolute treasure when it comes to prose. Of the two, however, I think The Night Circus is definitely the more quotable. It has one of the few first lines that I can remember off the top of my head! And, as I said, the writing is just so beautiful and lilting that I find myself drawn to so many lines throughout the story. Just thinking about it kind of makes me want to re-read it, haha.
