www wednesday

WWW Wednesday: Sep 8, 2021

Itโ€™s time for another WWW Wednesday! This is a bookish meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words where bloggers answer the 3 Ws:

  1. What are you currently reading?
  2. What did you recently finish reading?
  3. What do you think youโ€™ll read next?

If youโ€™d like to learn more about any of these books, click on the cover to be taken to the Goodreads page.

Current Reads

  • Ace of Spades by Faridah ร€bรญkรฉ-รyรญmรญdรฉ: I’m reading this book with a bunch of bookish friends and, y’all, it has started off strong! I honestly had to set it down for a bit because it was all I wanted to read and I had so many books to finish last month ๐Ÿ˜‚ Now that we’re into September and I have less books on my TBR, I’m excited to pick it back up. It’s so twisty and takes a hard look at some pretty heavy topics and I’m loving it!
  • The Dare by Lesley Kara: I’m also taking part in a Netgalley reading catch-up with more bookish friends and this is at the top of my list! Mostly because the publisher reached out to me to send me a copy and I feel bad I haven’t finished it yet. But also because I’ve loved both the books I’ve read by this author! It’s a thriller centering around a tragic train accident that happened when the main character was young that killed her best friend. There are secrets and, so far, is giving me some great thriller vibes.

Recently Finished

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
  • The Girls Are Never Gone by Sarah Glenn Marsh: I recently read this for a blog tour hosted by TBR & Beyond Tours. This was such an atmospheric and creepy read! It’s definitely the perfect book to get you into the mood for spooky season. I really loved the main character, as well. I certainly won’t be swimming in a lake any time soon, though ๐Ÿ˜‚ You can read my full review here!
  • Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix: I legit just finished this yesterday and it was… fine? I really liked the premise, I enjoyed the nods to old slasher films (I love horror movies!), and the writing was certainly gripping. But the characters gave me anxiety, the twist was kind of predictable (if you pay attention to the inserted media), and the wrap up felt a little too neat. It was a good time while I was reading it, but it definitely didn’t hit the way The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires did.

What’s Next

  • The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna: This poor book has been on my potential TBR for so long now, but it’s finally time! I put it on my Magical Readathon TBR and, dangit, I’m gonna read it! I’ve been anxious to read this African inspired YA fantasy ever since I saw this gorgeous cover. I’ve heard nothing but great things from others who have read it, so I’m extra excited to pick it up.
  • Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir: Though this book hasn’t been on the TBR quite as long, I’m just as excited to read it! I’ve loved everything I’ve read by Andy Weir, so I can’t imagine this will be any different. Especially since people are saying this gives strong The Martian vibes, which is my favorite book by him. Fingers crossed I love this one as much, if not more!

August 2021 Wrap Up

Hello, reader!

Guess who just had her best reading month (both in quantity and quality) in August?? Yup! This girl! Not only did I read a whopping 16 books (!!), but I read not one, not two, but four 5 star reads! Let’s take a moment to appreciate this because it won’t be happening again ๐Ÿ˜‚ I have to give props to the Trope-ical Readathon and my competitive nature for bumping them numbers, lol. Though I didn’t finish all the books on my TBR, I read more prompts than I ever have before! After a kind of lackluster July, I’m happy that August really brought its A game. I read so many incredible books (and a couple of duds…) and found a couple of new favorites.

But enough chit-chat, let’s get to what I read in August!

Books Read

Click on the covers to be taken to the bookโ€™s Goodreads page

Book:ย The Furthest Stationย by Ben Aaronovitch

Rating: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Thoughts: The Rivers of London readalong continues and, this time, I went with an audiobook! Which, I have to say, I really loved. The narrator was top-notch! This is a novella that I quite enjoyed, especially since we get to see a lot of Abigail. She’s quickly becoming one of my favorite characters in this series.

Book:ย The Princess Brideย by William Goldman

Rating:ย โ˜…โ˜…

Thoughts: This one hurt, I have to say. This was one of my favorite books when I was younger. The adventure! The love story! I remember falling for this book so hard. And then I re-read it with TWR book club and yiiiiikes. The fatphobia! The sexism! It was just… not it. Nostalgia is the main reason this got a two star instead of a one. I think I’ll just stick with the movie ๐Ÿ˜…

Book:ย The Empress of Salt and Fortuneย by Nghi Vo

Rating:ย โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Thoughts: And then came my first five star read of the month! My goodness, this book was incredible! This is the first book in the Singing Hills Cycle and it completely captured my imagination. Nghi Vo has beautiful writing that pulls you into the story in the best way. I loved the cleric and their talking bird and I loved hearing Rabbit’s story. This book made me want to read everything Nghi Vo ever writes!
