BBNYA Semi-Finalist Spotlight 2024: All In by Russell Isler

Hello, reader!

Today on the blog, I’m helping the Book Bloggersโ€™ Novel of the Year Award (BBNYA) spotlight all the books that made it to the semi-finals! We had an incredible line up of novels in 2024, which was very exciting for me as a panelist. My TBR grew exponentially just from reading my assigned excerpts! So, even though I didn’t delve into every semi-finalist, they all deserve a shout-out because the competition was tough this year.

But what is BBNYA, exactly? It is a yearly competition where book bloggers from all over the world read and score books written by indie authors, ending with 16 finalists and one overall winner. It’s a way to celebrate indie novels, which don’t get nearly enough love, and hopefully bring more attention to indie authors and indie publishing in general.

If you want some more information about BBNYA, check out the BBNYA Website https://www.bbnya.com/ or take a peek over on Twitter @BBNYA_Official. BBNYA is brought to you in association with the @Foliosociety (if you love beautiful books, you NEED to check out their website!) and the book blogger support group @The_WriteReads.

Our spotlight for today is shining on a thriller featuring a vampire playboy: All In by Russell Isler!

Itโ€™s time for another WWW Wednesday! This is a bookish meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words where bloggers answer the 3 Ws:

  1. What are you currently reading?
  2. What did you recently finish reading?
  3. What do you think youโ€™ll read next?

If youโ€™d like to learn more about any of these books, click on the cover to be taken to the Goodreads page.

Current Reads

  • Cursed in Love by Zoe Ashwood: I have been “reading” this for a minute now, but I have to be honest and say that I put it down for awhile. Not because I wasn’t enjoying it! This reverse harem paranormal fantasy has been such a wild ride so far. I put it down because I was feeling a bit of a burnout with paranormal books because I read quite a few back to back to back. Now that I’ve had a bit of a breather, I’ve dived back in and I am loving it!
  • Rogue Protocol by Martha Wells: I’m continuing my reread of the Murderbot series and, so far, this book is just as much of a good time as the first two. I could probably read about Murderbot watching TV for a week and still love it, lol. I adore their character and their thought processes and their wit. I’m really looking forward to getting to the full length novel of this series because getting to hang out with Murderbot for more than a 150 pages sounds incredible.

March 2023 Wrap Up

Hello, reader!

Look who is finally wrapping up her March reading! Yes, I know it’s the last day of April and I’ll soon need to be doing that wrap up, but better late than never, right? That’s what I’m telling myself ๐Ÿ˜‚ In March, I participated in the Trope-ical Readathon, which usually corresponds with me reading a ton of books! This March, however, I found myself in a weird, kind of reading slump. Like, I was enjoying most of what I was reading, but the urge to read was super low. Still, I managed to get through 8 books and I ended up with two five star reads! I’m gonna count that as a win.

Now, let me wrap up all my reading for last month.

Books Reads

  • Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun by Elle Cosimano: I read this book for the Literally Dead Book Club. It was the February pick and I vastly overestimated how quickly I could read it, haha. That being said, I had a good time with this book but I think I would have benefitted from not binging all the books in a row. This is the third book in a mystery series and, though I loved the concept at first, but this third book it was starting to get a little too absurd, haha. I still love Finlay and Vero, but the things they get themselves into (and out of) are starting to really stretch my suspension of disbelief. I’m not sure if I’ll pick up the next book… perhaps with a little time between reading about these characters will make me like it a lot more. โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…
  • Appointment with Death by Agatha Christie: This was my first Trope-ical Readathon read and I enjoyed it! Hercule Poirot books are just a comfort read, at this point, because they’re so easy to get into and entertaining. I’m always a little put out when it takes forever for the famous detective to make an appearance in the story and that is definitely the case with this book. Still, I liked the mystery, I liked the investigation, and I liked the reveal. This was a solid addition to the series and I ended up having a good time reading it. โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…
  • The Moth Keeper by K. O’Neill: I participated in the TBR & Beyond Tours book tour for this middle grade graphic novel and I absolutely loved it! K. O’Neill’s art is always gorgeous and this graphic novel is no different. This was a beautiful book containing and important story. It’s about a young girl who has been tapped as her community’s new Moth Keeper, a very important job because the people really depend on the moths she’ll be protecting. It talks about loneliness and burnout; topics that I think it dealt with in a wonderful and accessible way. You can read my full review here. โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Kanjin hardly view their servants as human. Even less so when they are different.

Asagi is different. Both a man and a woman.

In the wake of his failure to protect a boy they saw as a son from their abusive master, Asagi is sold into the house of a young nobleman, Mahiro, who is the opposite of everything Asagi has ever knownโ€”gentle, kind, and generous.

Mahiro bonds with Asagi and their friendship blooms into a deep and profound love. But when Asagi is poisoned out of jealousy, Mahiro reveals himself to be youkai, a demon who feeds on blood, and he has no choice but to turn Asagi to save their life.

Asagi awakes reborn, strong, and eternally youthful. But the price for Asagiโ€™s new life is high.

The blood of the innocent.

Just as Asagiโ€™s trust in Mahiro falters, the boy they failed to protect, now a man, reappears.

New master, same threat.

With both a literal and proverbial monster at the door, Asagi must decide what it means to be human to protect what they loves most.

If you like Bella Forrest, P. C. Cast, AJ Tipton, or Anne Rice, you will love this beautiful dark paranormal fantasy romance.

December 2021 Wrap Up

Hello, reader!

Welcome to the first day of the new year! What better way to kick off 2022 by closing out 2021? It’s time to wrap up my reading for December. It was a pretty easy-going reading month because I was mostly focused on getting ready for Christmas. I did manage to get through five books, though, and I’m not mad about it! Quality-wise, it was a great way to close out the year.

Alright, let’s see what I read in the last month of 2021!

Books Read

Book:ย The Girl of Dorcha Wood by Kristin Ward

Rating: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Thoughts: I read this for a tour run by The Write Reads and I had so much fun with it! It’s certainly a dark tale (so please check triggers!) but it was a wild ride, too. I loved the take on Celtic folklore. I’m looking forward to continuing the series. You can read my full review here!

Book:ย The Lost Sentinel by Suzanne Rogerson

Rating:ย โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Thoughts: I read this book as part of being a BBNYA 2021 panelist. Though this wasn’t my favorite of the three I read, it was still a solid fantasy novel. The pacing was a bit off, but the characters and the world-building was great! I’m sure I’ll be writing a full review soon for the finalists blog tour.

Book:ย Forget Me Not by Anca Antoci

Rating: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Thoughts: We have another The Write Reads blog tour book here! This was such an interesting read that I absolutely flew through. There were some pacing issues, but it was such an unique fantasy that I ended up loving. You can read my full review here!

First Lines Friday #20

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?  If you want to make your own post, feel free to use or edit the banner above, and follow the rules below:

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but donโ€™t give anything else about the book away just yet โ€“ you need to hook the reader first
  • Finallyโ€ฆ reveal the book!

If youโ€™re using Twitter, donโ€™t forget to use #FirstLinesFridays!

Hello, reader!

Welcome to October! And welcome to this week’s First Lines Friday post! In honor of us now being in the spookiest month of the year, I thought I would feature a book that’s more on the dark side. This is one I’m reading for a blog tour and, so far, it’s got the perfect vibes for this time of year. Let’s see if the first few lines can capture your interest as much as it did mine!

The Line(s):

“A pulsing entity.
It called out to him from within the torrents of rain, enticing with a promise of unimaginable power, demanding his full attention.
When Drayvex had first arrived and breathed the alien atmosphere, it had nudged against his senses. He’d almost dismissed it. But as he’d lingered at the point between worlds, he’d deduced that not only was the entity moving towards him, but its power was on a whole other level.”

The Hints:

This is a paranormal fantasy featuring a dark artifact.

To obtain this artifact, our main character has to work with the demon who stole it in the first place.

And, oh yeah, the fate of the world is kind of resting on their shoulders. No biggie.

The Reveal:

Click the cover to be taken to the Goodreads page

Goodreads Synopsis

“For her, itโ€™s her late grandmaโ€™s legacy. For him, the mother of all black arts spoils, granting one demon the power of a God. Immortality.

When occult-magnet Ruby falls victim to Demon Lord Drayvexโ€™s viperous allure, she loses a sentient dark relic to his light fingers and appetite for power. Like calls to like. But when Drayvex himself loses the relic to a traitor to the throne, Ruby coerces him โ€“ the tyrant king with a soft spot for humanity โ€“ into helping her save her pokey old world village from becoming a ground zero of mass demonic carnage.

Both invested in reclaiming the relic, the one thing Ruby and Drayvex agree on is that itโ€™s in the wrong hands. Co-existing in a precarious arrangement between predator and prey, to save the planet they both love for different reasons, they must become a formidable double-team in the face of an apocalyptic takeover. Now, the fate of both human and demon alike rests with a killer that walks between worlds, and a woman with a curse in her bloodline.”

Did those first few lines capture your attention? Did they make you want to read the rest of the story? Let me know in the comments!

And, as always, happy reading!
