First Lines Friday #29

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?  If you want to make your own post, feel free to use or edit the banner above, and follow the rules below:

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but donโ€™t give anything else about the book away just yet โ€“ you need to hook the reader first
  • Finallyโ€ฆ reveal the book!

If youโ€™re using Twitter, donโ€™t forget to use #FirstLinesFridays!

Hello, reader!

It’s the first Friday of the new year, so let’s kick it off right with a First Lines Friday post! The book I’m featuring today is one I’ve mentioned recently on the blog. I’m reading it for a blog tour and I’m so excited to dive in! Let’s see if the first few lines can amp up my excitement even more.

The Line(s):

“When Ebenezer Tweezer was eleven years old, the world was much younger.
Instead of cars on the streets, there were horses and carriages. In place of phones and computers, people would communicate via letters and hopeful shouting.
There was no such thing as photographs, and so if you were the sort of person who liked to capture the moment whenever you happened to be wearing a nice outfit or eating a pretty meal, you would have to travel around with your own personal portrait artist.”

The Hints:

This is a sequel to another blog tour book I read in 2020.

It is a middle grade novel that promises to be both gruesome and hilarious.

Though I suppose a child-eating monster is no laughing matter…

Synopsis

Treacherous. Evil. Dark. Dorcha Wood is all of these. And none of them.

The people of Felmore talk of Dorcha Wood in whispers, if they speak of it at all, fearing the wrath of the Cรน-Sรฌth should their words be carried on the wind. Those murdering beasts still roam the darkness of the forest, the last remnants of the cursed Aos Sรญโ€”a race of elves long since vanished from the world.

But to seventeen-year-old Fiadh, it is home. A haven. A forest whose secrets become known only when it chooses to reveal them. Her life is one of balance until the outside world shatters it.

From the moment Fiadh set eyes on Gideon, the peaceful rhythm of her life was lost. As a new path unfolds, Fiadh confronts the reality of old hatreds, the consequences of things hidden, and the truth of who she really is.”

Can’t Wait Wednesday: Oct 20, 2021

Canโ€™t-Wait Wednesday is a meme where you get to flail about whatever upcoming book youโ€™re excited to read. Though it is generally a new release, it certainly can be any book thatโ€™s on your TBR! This meme is currently hosted by Wishful Endings and itโ€™s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.

Hello, reader!

It’s been awhile since I’ve done a Can’t Wait Wednesday post, hasn’t it? I’d thought I’d switch it up this week! And then, as soon as I had this thought, I realized there really aren’t a lot of my most anticipated 2021 releases that aren’t already out. It seems like not a lot of books get published in the tail-end of the year. Well… at least not a lot of books that have ended up on my Want to Read shelf.

But then I remembered that one of my most anticipated sequels has yet to be released! I loved the first book when I read it in 2020, so much so that as soon as it was available, I pre-ordered the second one. Which is saying something because I don’t pre-order a lot of books. I really should, though… it’s like a little present to future-Kerri ๐Ÿ˜‚ This particular present features:

  • World-changing magic โœจ
  • Complicated relationships ๐Ÿ’”
  • A beautiful, African-inspired setting ๐ŸŒ

The book I’m talking about is…

Synopsis

“For her, itโ€™s her late grandmaโ€™s legacy. For him, the mother of all black arts spoils, granting one demon the power of a God. Immortality.

When occult-magnet Ruby falls victim to Demon Lord Drayvexโ€™s viperous allure, she loses a sentient dark relic to his light fingers and appetite for power. Like calls to like. But when Drayvex himself loses the relic to a traitor to the throne, Ruby coerces him โ€“ the tyrant king with a soft spot for humanity โ€“ into helping her save her pokey old world village from becoming a ground zero of mass demonic carnage.

Both invested in reclaiming the relic, the one thing Ruby and Drayvex agree on is that itโ€™s in the wrong hands. Co-existing in a precarious arrangement between predator and prey, to save the planet they both love for different reasons, they must become a formidable double-team in the face of an apocalyptic takeover. Now, the fate of both human and demon alike rests with a killer that walks between worlds, and a woman with a curse in her bloodline.”

Book Blogger Hop: Oct 1 – 7

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Crazy-For-Books and is currently being hosted by Coffee Addicted Writer. Every Friday, a new question is posted for book bloggers to answer in the coming week. The purpose of the hop is connection and community. You can discover new blogs to follow, new books to read, and you may end up with some new followers, as well!

Hello, reader!

We’re on the cusp of a brand new week and I thought this would be a great time to check out the new Book Blogger Hop question! I’d forgotten how much I enjoy doing this meme because it’s a chance to just ramble about whatever bookish topic is on the table. And some people come up with the most interesting questions! The one we have this week is case in point…

This Week’s Question

Image created by Coffee Addicted Writer

Which book series make you crave chocolate?

Submitted by Julie @ Stepping Stones Book Reviews.

This is actually a tough one! There have been quite a few books that have made me crave food, but chocolate in particular? The obvious answer would be Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, but I’ve heard some dubious things about him lately, so I decided to dig a little deeper into my read books. And that’s when I remembered the wonderful book Tilly and the Bookwanderers by Anna James!

Though this book doesn’t focus around a magical chocolate factory, it does take place in a magical bookstore. And that bookstore has a cafe that sells some incredible treats! The descriptions of the pastries that Tilly gets to sample honestly had me drooling. Why this book popped into my mind for this question, though, was the hot chocolate. The hot chocolate sounded so good! Just thinking about it right now makes me want a mug ๐Ÿ˜‹

Now I haven’t continued this series, so I don’t know if the wonderful food descriptions are in the later books, but I certainly hope so! I love a book that has such descriptive writing that you can almost taste the brownies as they are described.

And now I want a brownie…

Are there any books or book series that make you crave some chocolate? ย Let me know in the comments!

And, as always, happy reading!
