Current Reads

  • Babylonia by Costanza Casati: I just started this historical fiction novel, but I can already tell I’m going to enjoy it. It starts with our main character grifting a man out of some gold in exchange for her helping to save his life. Get that coin, girl! I’m loving the writing style, the setting, and the interesting characters. I’m excited to keep reading! It seems like it’s going to bloody and political and right up my alley.
  • One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig: I’m re-reading this fantasy novel as a part of another Fable book club. I had forgotten how much I loved this story! The atmosphere, the characters, the hint of romance… it’s really scratching a lot of my itches. The audiobook is pretty great, as well, so I’m glad I decided to go that route with my re-read. I see myself reading the sequel in the very near future.

25 Books In 2025

Hello, reader!

We’re into the second week of 2025 and I haven’t spoken a word about any of my 2025 reading goals. Mostly because I’m trying to go into this year putting as little pressure on my reading life as possible! In that direction, slumps lie, ya know what I mean? Going into the year struggling with a reading slump already feels like not the best time to start making demands of myself when it comes to books.

I do, however, love me a list and, while I was on leave from work for a minor surgery, I decided to make a spreadsheet of all the unread books that I own. I was bored and stuck at home and it seemed like a great idea. That task revealed that I have 375 books that I physically own that I haven’t read! That… feels like a lot 😅 So I decided that I needed to set at least own reading goal in 2025 and that was to read more of my owned TBR instead of getting distracted by flashy, new things.

In the spirit of this goal (and because it’s one of the challenges in my Little Inklings Design planner), I’ve decided that I’m going to do the 25 Books In 2025 reading challenge! And every book on my list is going to be a book from my owned TBR. All the books on my list were chosen at random by using a number generator and my spreadsheet, so there is no rhyme or reason to this at all, haha. Still, I’m excited for all the picks and happy to bring down the, frankly, ridiculous number of unread books that I own.

That being said, let me share which 25 books I’ll be attempting to read in 2025!

My Top 5 Reads of 2024

Hello, reader!

We have rolled into 2025 and that means it’s time to look back at my reading from 2024. Quite honestly, I found myself hitting another slump in the summer time just like I did in 2023. Here’s hoping this is not a trend because summer used to be one of my favorite seasons for reading! That being said, I didn’t read nearly as much as I was hoping to in 2024. So, as the year was coming to an end, I couldn’t see myself doing a bunch of individual end-of-year posts but I still wanted to talk about my favorite reads from the past year. Thus this post was born!

Here’s a quick overview of how my reading year went in 2024:

That’s quite the drop from 2023, when I read 86 books, but I also spent most of the first few months in a reading slump and then most of the summer in a similar slump 😅 So over 50 books isn’t half bad! I think I only got that many under my belt because I really started embracing audiobooks in 2024. The fact that I found earbuds that actually fit my tiny, baby ears helped with that, haha. Seriously, though, a good audiobook can elevate a story so much and I’m happy I’ve jumped on this particular train.

The format I’ve kind of stopped loving, though, are e-books. I don’t know what it is, but e-books and I are not grooving these days. I don’t like reading on my phone or my Kindle nearly as much as I used to and I think that it’s because I tend to get a headache even if I’ve only been reading for thirty minutes. My old lady eyes are not loving screens lately so now most of my reads are either physical (still the favorite!) or audiobooks. I don’t know if that will be changing anytime soon, but I’m not ready to give up on e-books all together.

Top 5 Reads of 2024

But enough rambling about my lackluster reading year! Though it was less than I wanted and though it felt very “meh” overall, I had five books that stood out and made me fall in love with reading all over again. All but one are fantasy and the outlier is science fiction. So maybe I should head back to my roots and wallow in my favorite genre for 2025 😂

(I’m not gonna do that because that’s how you miss great reads!)

These books are the ones that reminded me why I love reading and, for that, they deserve a shout out! Here, in no particular order, are my Top 5 Reads of 2024!

Current Reads

  • No One Can Know by Kate Alice Marshall: We’re beginning 2025 with some dark reads, y’all. I got this book from Book of the Month in December… of 2023, heh. One of my goals this year is to try and read down my BotM backlog so it seemed appropriate to kick my reading year off with one! I know nothing about this book because I like to go into mystery/thrillers that way. But I’ve read the first few chapters and, yup, this is gonna be dark. There’s already been blood and bodies! I’m loving the writing, so I’m excited to continue with this one.
  • The Indifferent Stars Above by Daniel James Brown: To get myself back into the reading groove, I’ve joined a couple of book clubs over on Fable. Also, I have a Fable account now, I guess, haha. I keep taste-testing all these reading trackers (my poor, neglected Storygraph…) because there has to be something better than Goodreads, right? Anyways, one of the book clubs I joined is called the Weirdo Book Club and this book is the pick for January. Didn’t think I’d start off the year reading a non-fiction but the fact that it’s about the Donner Party feels very me. Hmm… that’s a worrying statement 😂 So far, I’m loving the writing because it doesn’t read like a textbook.

#5OnMyTBR – 2024 Titles You Didn’t Get To

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook where you chose five books from your to-be-read pile that fit that week’s theme. If you’d like more info, head over to the announcement post!

Hello, reader!

I hope everyone is enjoying their holidays. This is a weird time of year where I’m still working (yay, healthcare) but the world feels like it’s in a liminal space, haha. It’s also a time to reflect on the year that has past, which lends itself well to this week’s 5 On My TBR theme. We’re talking all about books I meant to read in 2024. There were… a lot of books I meant to read this past year that never got picked up, so I’m deciding to focus on five 2024 releases that I really wanted to read, but never did. Trust me, even that reduced list could go on for ages 😅😂

That being said, let’s dive in!

#1. The God of the Woods by Liz Moore

I got this book from Book of the Month Club because of two reasons. Number one, I kept seeing this book everywhere! People were talking about this one all over the bookish internet and I jumped on the hype train. Number two, I love the cover. I mean… look at it! It just gives off a dark, woodsy vibe that has me intrigued. And, according to the synopsis, this will be a “thrilling drama”, and I need more thrilling reads in my life right now. Count me in!

#2. Wisteria by Adalyn Grace

I’ve found recently that YA fantasy is very hit or miss for me. I either fall in love with the story or can barely force myself through the book. Which, hey, I’m 42 so decidedly not the target audience. But this series? This series has absolutely captured my imagination. It’s a combination of beautiful writing, fascinating characters, and love stories that don’t make me want to roll my eyes. I’m eager to give this one a read and finish out the series.

Trope-ical Readathon TBR: August 2024

Hello, reader!

It’s time for another round of the Trope-ical Readathon! I noticed that I never did a TBR on the blog for the last round, which was in March. That’s because the last round is what helped me dig myself out of a reading slump that I’m still kind of battling. My reading has ben sloooow this year, but readathons are always a great way to find my motivation. Hopefully, this go around will help me kick my slump all together!

Before I tell you what I’m planning on reading this round, why don’t I tell you more about the actual readathon. The Trope-ical Readathon is a month-long, team-based readathon created and run by Jenny @ JenJenReviews and her partner, @BookRob. It centers around reading books that feature specific “tropes”. Think stuff like “found family” and the ever contested “love triangle”. There are thirteen general prompts geared towards thirteen different tropes, so there’s bound to be at least a couple you love! For all the info and to join a team, just check out the Trope-ical Readathon website.

All that said, let me share all the prompts and what I’m hoping to read for each one!

Team Fantasy Challenges

Team Book (New)

Masquerade by O.O. Sangoyomi

This African loose retelling of the legend of Persephone sounds like something I would absolutely love! It promises high stakes, political intrigue, and a woman claiming her power. Also, I’m in awe of the cover. It’s absolutely stunning! This book is a recent release but I’ve already heard amazing things about it. I can’t wait to give it a read in August.

Team Challenge #1: “Talking Animal” Trope

Wundersmith by Jessica Townsend

I’ve been meaning to continue my read of the Nevermoor series and, yet, I still haven’t picked up the second book. It’s been lost of the shuffle of all the new books I buy or check out from the library, heh. But this challenge gives me the perfect excuse to get back into the series! I’m excited to go back to the Wonderous Society and see how our girl Morrigan is getting on.

Team Challenge #2: “Unlikely Allies” Trope

Five Broken Blades by Mai Corland

I’ve wanted to read this book since I picked it up from Book of the Month Club. It features deadly people thrown together to complete a job who are, more than likely, ready to turn on each other in a heartbeat. If that’s not the definition of “unlikely allies”, I don’t know what is! I’m excited to see how they work together and what the end results will be. I’m guessing murder.

New Bookshelf, Who Dis?

Hello reader!

Recently, I was gifted a new bookshelf for my birthday because my books had long since ceased to fit on the ones I already owned. A tragedy and a good problem to have all at the same time, in my opinion. Well, my birthday was back in September and I finally got around to building that beautiful new bookshelf.

And guess what?

My books still don’t fit 😂 So that got me to thinking about books and organizing and how I can make my limited shelf space work. It also made me immediately assess my bedroom to see if we could find space to fit yet another bookshelf… because I have a problem.

Time to Organize!

One good thing about building that new shelf was I had to go through the various stacks of books I had scattered about my office. It was an illuminating experience, that’s for sure. I found quite a few books where I had two copies (oops!), a few books that I didn’t even remember buying, and lots that reignited my excitement for the book just by pulling them out of the pile. But then I had to consider how I wanted to organize them all!

Currently, all my read books are downstair on two bookshelves, while I had one bookshelf upstairs for my unread books. As the years have gone by, though, I’ve been terrible at transferring my read books downstairs, which leaves no space for all the new books that were coming in. Thus, the random books stacks were born. As I went through my books after building the new shelf, I made sure to separate out all my read books because I want to get back to keeping those in separate spaces. And I got almost all my unread books on the shelf… but there are still a couple (much smaller!) stacks lying about.

This prompted me to think about how to make more space for all my unread books, which led me to ponder a topic I’ve avoided for quite some time…

To Unhaul or Not Unhaul?

I am a reader at heart but you know what else I am? A book hoarder. Once a book has come into my possession, it never leaves. At least… that’s how I’ve lived most of my life. Whether I hate a book or love it, I can’t seem to make myself part with any book I’ve ever either bought or received.

I think, however, it’s time for a change. My space dilemma has made me finally sit down an seriously consider doing a massive unhaul. The book hoarder in me rages against the idea, but the organizer in me thinks this is just what the doctor ordered. I can not only make space for the books I haven’t read yet, but I can cultivate bookshelves that really reflect who I am as a reader. Right now, there are books I gave one or two stars that are prominently displayed on my shelves. We can’t have that, right?

I think my other unhaul roadblock, beyond my dragon-like obsession with not parting with any bit of my hoard, is that I’m unsure how I want to get rid of the unlucky books I decide to let go. We don’t have a used bookstore that’s terribly close to us. My local library does accept donations, but I feel like I’m going to have a least a couple of boxes of books that I unhaul and, for some reason, I feel like I would be such a burden dropping all that off at once, lol. They probably wouldn’t care, but that’s how my weird little mind works. I suppose I could try selling them online, like with Pango Books, but that sounds an awful lot like work and my full time job is quite enough, thank you. So I have the will, but not a plan, and I’m a woman who needs a plan before she does anything.

Perhaps it’s enough that I’ve finally made that leap and made the decision to get rid of some books. Now, I just need to come up with a plan to make it happen. The bookish organization journey continues!

How do you organize your books? How do you get rid of books you no longer want to keep? Let me know in the comments and help me plan!

#5OnMyTBR: Author’s Debut

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook where you chose five books from your to-be-read pile that fit that week’s theme. If you’d like more info, head over to the announcement post!

Hello, reader!

It’s Tuesday and I’m a day late (thanks, migraine…), but it’s time for another 5 On My TBR. What is the topic for this week? We’re talking about authors’ debuts! I honestly don’t track whether books are debuts or not, so I had to look up a list on Goodreads, haha. And then I realized just how many debut novels I have on my TBR! It is… a little much. So I’ve narrowed it down to five debuts on my TBR that I’m eager to give a read. Who knows? Maybe I’ll discover a new favorite author.

#1. Sing Me to Sleep by Gabi Burton

This book sounds like it’s going to be an absolute thrill! We follow a young siren who has to hide who she is and suppress her powers to protect her family. When a blackmailer gets a hold of her, she is forced to be the bodyguard for the crown prince. By all rights, she should hate him, but we all know that’s not how this story goes, haha. It sounds so twisty and action-packed and I’m so excited to give it a try!

#2. Ink Blood Sister Scribe by Emma Törzs

If all I knew about this book was that it involves a library filled with magical books, that’s all I would need to know to want to read it. It also revolves two estranged sisters and I do love a book that delves into complicated familial relationships. That is especially true if it’s a sibling relationship, so this book is truly calling to me! I’m not gonna lie, the cover also got because… I mean… look at it! Simple but beautiful and I can’t wait to read it.

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

In an effort to try and cut down on the amount of books on my physical TBR, I’ve been picking up some books that I’ve been meaning to read for years. This one sits near the top of the list, haha. I actually own both this and the sequel, Children of Virtue and Vengeance, because I bought them forever ago when the hype for this was peak. Then I saw that the last book in the series was coming out this month so I figured this was perfect timing! So far, I’m really enjoying this novel and I’m excited to see how it all wraps up.
