Goodreads/TBR Monday: July 27th, 2026

Goodreads Monday/TBR Monday is a bookish meme hosted by Emily @ Budget Tales Book Blog invites you to post about what books are on your Goodreads โ€œto readโ€ lists or TBR lists, the progress you have made on your current books and reading challenges, and any other bookish news!

Hello, reader!

Goodreads Monday has arrived! I’m working with 836 books on my Goodreads “Wants to Read” shelf right now. Lots of potential to pull a random book that I’ve completely forgotten I want to read, haha. Or pull something that I’ve been dying to read and just haven’t picked up yet. Either way, I’ll decided whether or not whatever book is picked gets to stay on the TBR or not.

Let’s see what book we have today!

Synopsis:
International phenomenon Angie Thomas revisits Garden Heights seventeen years before the events of The Hate U Give in this searing and poignant exploration of Black boyhood and manhood.

If thereโ€™s one thing seventeen-year-old Maverick Carter knows, itโ€™s that a real man takes care of his family. As the son of a former gang legend, Mav does that the only way he knows how: dealing for the King Lords. With this money he can help his mom, who works two jobs while his dadโ€™s in prison.

Lifeโ€™s not perfect, but with a fly girlfriend and a cousin who always has his back, Mavโ€™s got everything under control.

Until, that is, Maverick finds out heโ€™s a father.

Suddenly he has a baby, Seven, who depends on him for everything. But itโ€™s not so easy to sling dope, finish school, and raise a child. So when heโ€™s offered the chance to go straight, he takes it. In a world where heโ€™s expected to amount to nothing, maybe Mav can prove heโ€™s different.

When King Lord blood runs through your veins, though, you can’t just walk away. Loyalty, revenge, and responsibility threaten to tear Mav apart, especially after the brutal murder of a loved one. Heโ€™ll have to figure out for himself what it really means to be a man.
