5 on my tbr

#5OnMyTBR – Nonfiction

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook where you chose five books from your to-be-read pile that fit that week’s theme. If you’d like more info, head over to the announcement post!

Hello, reader!

I hope y’all are having a grand Monday! It’s time for another 5 On My TBR to kick off another week. This week I had plenty of books from which to choose since the theme this week is non-fiction books. I don’t pick up non-fiction nearly as much as I do fiction, so there are quite a few that are just languishing on my TBR.

I’ve picked five that I’d love to get to sooner rather than later, so let’s get to the list!

#1. The Lost Continent by Bill Bryson

Bill Bryson has to be one of my favorite non-fiction writers. His book about hiking the Appalachian Trail, A Walk in the Woods, was both informative and quite humorous. I had such a great time with that book, so I’ve been wanting to read another of his books. This one talks about Bill Bryson re-settling in the United States after spending years abroad. I’m sure it will be just as engaging!

#2. The Real James Herriot by Jim Wight

James Herriot was one of my favorite authors when I was a kid. I loved reading about his adventures as a Yorkshire veterinarian and tore through his collection of tales at rapid speed. So when I discovered that his son had written a biography on his dad, I knew I wanted to read it. It’s sat on my TBR for ages, now, but I would love to read it sooner rather than later.

Down the TBR Hole #46

It’s time for a new round of Down the TBR Hole! This is where I go through my Goodreads ‘Want to Read’ shelf and do a bit of cleaning up. If you want to see the full description of what this post is all about, check out my first round HERE.

Hello, reader!

Welcome to another round of TBR cleansing with a new Down the TBR Hole post! So my TBR has managed to grow by one book since my last round. I’m sitting at 686 books on my Want to Read shelf when I ended last round with 685 books! I mean, adding one more book to my TBR, in the grand scheme of things, is so incredibly minor. Especially when I already have such a ridiculous amount of books I want to read 😂 Still, let’s see if I can trim it down a bit more.

Wish me luck!

Devolution by Max Brooks

I added this book solely because of how much I enjoyed another book by this author, World War Z. From what I can tell, this is written in the same style, telling the story through journals. It also revolves around the mystery of Bigfoot and some huge disaster that overtook a small town. Not gonna lie, it sounds incredible! So, of course, it gets to stick around.

Verdict: Keep

The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep by H.G. Parry

This book features one of my favorite tropes/genres ever. It’s a book about books! The main character has the ability to bring literary characters to life in the real world. Sounds like a great time, right? Well, not for Charley, who manages to let a few bad eggs loose in the city. I imagine this book is going to be such a fun time and I can’t wait to read it!

Verdict: Keep

top 5 tuesday

Top 5 Tuesday: Books Set In The Past

Top 5 Tuesday is a fun, weekly meme that asks you to pick 5 books that fit that week’s theme. It was created by Bionic Bookworm and is currently being hosted by Meeghan Reads. You should check out their wonderful blog for more details and the list of prompts!

Hello, reader!

I hope you’ve all had a lovely Tuesday. It was a busy day at work for me, so I’m ready to unwind, watch people talk about books on Youtube, and pick up a book of my own. First, though, it’s time for another Top 5 Tuesday post! Today, I get to talk about my top five books that are set in the past. I wasn’t sure how easy it would be to find five books that I love that are set in the past, but then I ended up with so many books from which to choose, haha. I’ve trimmed it down to my five favorites, though it was a tough decision to make.

Now, let me share them with you!

#1. The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi

This is a recent read that quickly stole my heart. It was vibrant and engaging, with incredible characters and even better writing! And it’s set in 1889 Paris, so it definitely belongs on this list. I loved this story so much. It has so many elements that I tend to gravitate towards: heists, morally grey characters, and, my fave, found family. I really need to continue with this series! Hopefully I’ll pick up the next book sooner rather than later.

#2. Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse

So I’m not 100% sure when this book takes place, but it is inspired by the pre-Columbian Americas and everything since pretty old school, so I’m saying it counts! Mostly because I just need an excuse to talk about this book at any opportunity 😂 This book has magic, mystery, and some of the most compelling characters I’ve read in awhile. Xiala and Serapio will always be my favorites and that holds true in the sequel, as well. I cannot wait for the next book!
