BBNYA Spotlight: A Game of Wings and Marks by Rebecca Crunden

Hello, reader!

Today on the blog, I’ll be doing one of many spotlights featuring one of the 65 novels that made it through to round two of BBNYA! This is my second year being a panelist for the awards and I’m having just as much fun discovering new books as I did last year. The fact that they are all indie-published is just an added bonus. But what is BBNYA and why all the spotlights, you may ask? Keep reading to find out!

This year, the Book Bloggers’ Novel of the Year Award (BBNYA) is celebrating the 65 books that made it into Round Two with a mini spotlight blitz tour for each title. BBNYA is a yearly competition where book bloggers from all over the world read and score books written by indie authors, ending with 10 finalists and one overall winner.ย

If you want some more information about BBNYA, check out the BBNYA Website https://www.bbnya.com/ or take a peek over on Twitter @BBNYA_Official. BBNYA is brought to you in association with the @Foliosociety (if you love beautiful books, you NEED to check out their website!) and the book blogger support group @The_WriteReads.

Mini Reviews: Middle Grade Edition v. 2

Hello, reader!

Today, I’m bringing you a batch of mini-reviews for some middle grade novels I’ve read recently. I have to say, before 2020, I really didn’t get into middle grade books beyond the wildly popular ones. Then I joined in with the Middle Grade Marvels group and I’ve discovered some truly incredibly tales! I’m loving being able to chat about this wonderful books as we read and, honestly, middle grades are just good for the soul. They’re usually so freaking wholesome and, sometimes, that’s just what you need.

The books I’ll be reviewing today are the first three Middle Grade Marvels picks from 2021. Because I’m v. behind on my reviews ๐Ÿ˜… That being said, why don’t we jump in!

Title:ย A Pinch of Magic

Author: Michelle Harrison

Genre:ย Fantasy

Source:ย Borrowed (Scribd)

CW/TW: Death, violence, kidnapping

Rating:ย โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

We kicked off the year with a pretty amazing pick! A Pinch of Magic follows the Widdershins sisters, Betty, Charlie, and Fliss. Betty wants to explore the world beyond their small town, but her grandmother has strictly forbidden it. Through a series a misadventures, Betty finds out why: all Widdershins are curse to die if they ever leave their town of Crowstone. Now Betty and her sisters are determined to find a way to counteract this curse and they are racing against the clock.

This was a lot of fun to read and, I have to say, much darker than the cover would lead you to believe! Which I kind of loved, if I’m being honest. I had a lot of fun following the Widdershins on their spooky adventure. There were moments where Betty could get under my skin. She’s headstrong and makes some rather impulsive decisions. I had to remind myself constantly that we all do dumb stuff at that age… though maybe not so life-threatening.

Overall, I loved getting to know all three of the sisters and I really enjoyed the story. The pacing was great, the atmosphere was wonderfully developed, and it had a very satisfying ending. It’s a strong start to a middle grade series and I’m definitely interested in reading more about the Widdershins!

First Lines Friday #18

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?  If you want to make your own post, feel free to use or edit the banner above, and follow the rules below:

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but donโ€™t give anything else about the book away just yet โ€“ you need to hook the reader first
  • Finallyโ€ฆ reveal the book!

If youโ€™re using Twitter, donโ€™t forget to use #FirstLinesFridays!

Hello, reader!

Welcome to another First Lines Friday post. Today, I’m featuring a book that has been on my TBR for quite some time. I’ve been promised a book that is feel-good and has a lot of heart and I’m eager to get to it! It also happens to be on my Trope-ical Readathon TBR because it features one of my favorite tropes.

But, before I completely give it away, let’s get to the first few lines and see if they will capture our imaginations.

The Line(s):

“Oh dear,” Linus Baker said, wiping the sweat from his brow. “This is most unusual.”
That was an understatement. He watched in rapt wonder as an eleven-year-old girl named Daisy levitated blocks of wood high above her head. The blocks spun in slow, concentric circles. Daisy frowned in concentration, the tip of her tongue stuck out between her teeth. It went on for a good minute before the blocks slowly lowered to the floor. Her level of control was astounding.

The Hints:

This is an adult fiction that is probably one of the most hyped books on my TBR.

It features the found family trope, which is one of my faves!

And I’ve been told there’s a M/M romance that will hit you right in the feels.

This or That Book Tag

Hello, reader!

I’m back with another book tag! I was tagged by the wonderful Danni @ _ForBooksSake to do the This or That Book Tag. She is one of my favorite bloggers and my go-to when I need a thriller or horror recommendation! You should definitely go check out her blog. Thank you so much for the tag, Danni โค

This tag was created by Ayunda @ย Tea and Paperbacks and it looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun, so let’s get to it!

The Rules:

  • Mention the creator of the tag
  • Thank the blogger who tagged you!
  • Tag other people to do the tag and spread the love!

The Questions:

Reading on the couch or on the bed?

Lately, I’ve been gravitating towards reading on the couch. Mostly because, when I read in bed, I end up falling asleep ๐Ÿ˜‚ That can be dangerous (and painful) when you’re reading a chonky one!

Sweet or salty snacks while reading?

If I’m snacking and reading, I typically lean towards salty snacks. Not because I love salty snacks more than sweet ones. I have a huge sweet tooth! But most of the sweet treats I like can be a bit messy to eat and I ain’t trying to get ice cream on my books. So we go with salty, lol.

Trilogies or quartets?

Though I do love even numbers, there is something about a trilogy that just hits different. I think it’s the perfect length for a series! Enough books to satisfy but not so many that I start to lose interest, ya know? Of course, there are exceptions (high fantasy, mostly), but I tend to love trilogies the most.

WWW Wednesday: Aug 11, 2021

Itโ€™s time for another WWW Wednesday! This is a bookish meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words where bloggers answer the 3 Ws:

  1. What are you currently reading?
  2. What did you recently finish reading?
  3. What do you think youโ€™ll read next?

If youโ€™d like to learn more about any of these books, click on the cover to be taken to the Goodreads page.

Current Reads

  • Malice by Heather Walker: I’ve finally started this dark fairytale retelling and I’m already invested in what happens to Alyce. This book has a lot going for it! The plot is intriguing, I’m liking the tone, and the writing is fantastic so far. I’m eager to get more into the story.
  • Redemptor by Jordan Ifueko: That’s right! I’m finally reading my most anticipated book of 2021! No pressure, right? It certainly has started off with a bang and it’s great to see all this characters I love so much again. I expect I’ll tear through this one in no time, lol.

Recently Finished

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
  • The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo: Uuuummm, this novella was incredible! And makes me want to read more by Nghi Vo! This was lyrical, mystical, and beautifully sad. I loved the characters. I could read an entire book of Rabbit telling stories, tbh. This was a breath of fresh air and I can’t wait to continue with the series!
  • A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers: Two five star reads pretty much back to back and they’re both novellas! This is a sci-fi novella featuring two of my new favorite characters: a tea monk named Dex and the robot they run into in the wilderness, Mosscap. I would fight for both of them and I’ve only just met them, lol. Thankfully, this is the first book in a new series which means I get more of these amazing characters!

What’s Next

  • The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune: That’s right, I’ll be picking up on of the most hyped books of this year next. I’m really excited to read this one as it features one of my favorite tropes: found family. Which is why I’m using it for that challenge in the Trope-ical Readathon, lol. I’m also eager to get to this because I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about it!
  • Fireborn by Aisling Fowler: I’m reading this one for a The Write Reads blog tour. Much like the previous book, I’ve heard nothing but great things about it! So much so that, even if I wasn’t on the tour, I would want to pick it up soon, lol. It’s a middle grade that is promising a lot of action and some โœจmagicโœจ, so I can’t wait! Also, how beautiful is that cover, right?

5 on my tbr

#5OnMyTBR – Science

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunterโ€™s Nook where you chose five books from your to-be-read pile that fit that weekโ€™s theme. If youโ€™d like more info, head over to the announcement post!

Hello, reader!

It’s been awhile since I’ve done a 5 On My TBR, so I figured it was about time I brought it back. The topic this week is science and I’m interpreting this one in a couple of ways. I have a mixture of science fiction and and non-fiction centered around science and they’re all books that I can’t wait to read!

Now it’s time to see what’s on my list.

#1. The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

One day, I am going to finally read the Broken Earth trilogy. One day!

This series, and this book in particular, has been on my TBR for forever. It sounds like a science fiction novel that would be right up my alley. Something that focuses on the characters and their struggles but also has incredible world-building. I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about this book, which is why I’m so excited to pick it up! Now I just gotta squeeze it onto a monthly TBR, lol.

#2. Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly

I’ve wanted to read this book ever since I heard about the movie. Which is kind of funny because I haven’t seen the movie, either ๐Ÿ˜… But a book that tells the true tale of the Black women who helped make NASA what it is? Yes, please! This sounds like one of those non-fiction books that won’t read like a textbook. Those are the ones I can just eat up! I’m looking forward to getting to this one… eventually.

#3. Kindred by Octavia Butler

I’ve been wanting to dip my toe into Octavia Butler’s books for a long time. I figured, why not start with one of her more popular sci-fis?

The subject matter of this story promises to pack quite a punch, so I feel like I need to be in a good mindset for it. But it also sounds likes it’s going to be absolutely amazing. I do love a bit of historical fiction, too, so here’s hoping I love this one, too.

The Bookworm’s Book Tag

Hello, reader!

Today on the blog, I’ll be doing another fun, bookish tag! Tags are some of my favorite posts to do and I’m glad I’m finally starting to catch up on them. I’m excited to bring to you The Bookworm’s Tag, which looks like it’s gonna be a blast. I was tagged by the lovely Livy @ Shelves of Starlight. She runs a fantastic bookish blog, so you should definitely go check it out! Thank you so much for the tag, Livy! Sorry it took me forver to get to it ๐Ÿ˜… This tag was originally created by Jehosheba @ Rambling Reviews.

Alright, let’s get to the questions!

The Rules:

  1. Thank and link the blogger who nominated you
  2. Include the tag graphic in your post
  3. Answer the 10 questions the blogger asked
  4. Nominate 5-10 bloggers
  5. Ask you nominees 10 book related questions
  6. Donโ€™t feel bound to these rules
  7. Have fun!

Livy’s Questions:

Where is your favourite place to read?

Currently? The recliner in our living room. I can play an ambiance video on YouTube, cuddle with the cats, and keep an eye on our youngest all at the same time, lol. If I’m reading a book where I don’t want to be too distracted, I’ll read up in my little office or on the bed or, if the weather is agreeable, on the back porch. Those are my go-to spots!

What has been your favourite book so far this year?

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse! Hands down! Will I shut up about this book any time soon?

Probably not.

But that’s only what it deserves! This is a vivid and lush story set in ancient Mesoamerica that will have you completely wrapped up in its world. The world-building? Top shelf! The characters? Compelling! The… everything?! EPIC!

Seriously, I loved this book and I want more people to love it too. If you haven’t read it yet (especially if you’re a fan of fantasy), I’m begging you to give it a try!

Which book are you excited to read in the second half of the year?

Is anyone surprised by this?

Redemptor by Jordan Ifueko is my most anticipated book of 2021, so of course it’s the book I’m most excited to read in the second half of the year! This is the sequel to Raybearer, my favorite book of 2020, and I’m both stoked to read it and a little nervous. This is the problem with loving the first book in a series…. what if I don’t love the subsequent books as much?

There is also the fact that this is the last book in the series. I don’t know if I’m ready to say goodbye to Tarisai and the world of Aritsar. Still, I’ll be reading this book in August and I cannot wait!

First Lines Friday #17

Hello, reader!

Happy Friday! I can’t tell you how excited I am that it’s finally the end of the week. It’s been super busy at work and ya girl is T I R E D. But now I can look forward to two days to just relax and garden and read. Ugh, it sounds fantastic.

But! That’s neither here nor there. Right now, it’s time for First Lines Friday! Today, I’m featuring a book that I’d been curious about for awhile and was happy to snag a copy from my library recently. I’ve been seeing it all over the bookish internet and my curiosity has just grown! I’m currently in the middle of it and it’s definitely living up to the hype. So now it’s time to share the first few lines and a few hints and see if I can get you hooked, as well.

The Line(s):

“Something wants to eat you,” called Almost Brilliant from her perch in a nearby tree, “and I shall not be sorry if it does.”
Chiming bells. Chih rolled to their feet, glancing around the perimeter and squinting at the jangling string of bells that surrounded the small campsite. For a moment, they were back at the abbey in Singing Hills, late for another round of prayers, chores, and lessons, but Singing Hills did not smell of ghosts and damp pine boughs. Singing Hills did not make the hairs on Chih’s arms rise up in alarm or their heart lurch with panic.”

The Hints:

This is a fantasy novella that was released last year.

It’s the first book in a series of fantasy novellas.

It’s set in an empire reminiscent of imperial China.

The Reveal:

Click the cover to be taken to the Goodreads page

Goodreads Synopsis

“A young royal from the far north is sent south for a political marriage in an empire reminiscent of imperial China. Her brothers are dead, her armies and their war mammoths long defeated and caged behind their borders. Alone and sometimes reviled, she must choose her allies carefully.

Rabbit, a handmaiden, sold by her parents to the palace for the lack of five baskets of dye, befriends the emperor’s lonely new wife and gets more than she bargained for.

At once feminist high fantasy and an indictment of monarchy, this evocative debut follows the rise of the empress In-yo, who has few resources and fewer friends. She’s a northern daughter in a mage-made summer exile, but she will bend history to her will and bring down her enemies, piece by piece.”

Did those first few lines capture your attention? Did they make you want to read the rest of the story? Let me know in the comments!

And, as always, happy reading!
