One Sentence Synopsis

After the events of Voice of War, a new threat has been unleashed on Arasin and it’s up to our mixed bag of heroes to help stop it.

Favorite Quote

“But this was different. This was a child embracing a wolf, expecting it to protect him from the night. Hope standing on a tightrope while the winds surge all around. The people needed hope, and so they grasped hold of the anomaly, and eased their fear with lies.
But what is truth if not a lie that has yet to be revealed?”

June 2021 Wrap Up

Hello, reader!

We’re over halfway through July, so I figured it might be time to throw up my June Wrap Up, lol. I’m not gonna lie, June was kind of a rough reading month for me. Not only did I not read as many books as the three previous months and fail hard at Pride month, but I found it so hard to get into most of the books I picked up. Not saying I didn’t enjoy the books I read. I didn’t rate anything below four stars, it was just getting myself to actually pick up the books felt like such a chore ๐Ÿ˜… I don’t know what brought it on, but it lead to June feeling like a very odd reading month!

Still, it’s not about quantity but quality right? Like I said, I didn’t rate anything I read last month under four stars and I had two five star reads! So why don’t we get to the post so you can see what I loved in June.

Book: Instructions for Dancing by Nicola Yoon

Rating: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Thoughts: I read this YA contemporary for a The Write Reads tour and I absolutely loved it! I went into this expecting a light-hearted story about young love and relationships, with a dash of magic. What I got was so much deeper and more emotional than that! This book ripped my heart out, but then gave me a warm hug afterwards. Ugh, I want to read it again and that’s always a mark of a great book to me! You can read my full review here.

Book: Shards of Earth by Adrian Tchaikovsky

Rating: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Thoughts: This was another The Write Reads tour book and another hit. I don’t know why I’m also so nervous to go int space opera books because I always end up loving them. This was the beginning to a new epic sci-fi and it was a wild ride! I had a lot of fun reading this book, even though it was a thick one, and I’m eager to continue the series when the next book comes out! You can read my full review here.

Book: Rivers of London: Body Work by Ben Aaronovitch

Rating: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Thoughts: I’m currently buddy reading this entire series with some bookish friends and we’ve gotten to the moment where we’re diving into the graphic novels. I found myself really enjoying this story and seeing characters I’ve been following for awhile come to life. Also, Nightingale is just awesome and I love when he gets to show off, lol. This was a fun, quick read and a great addition to the series.

First Lines Friday #14

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?  If you want to make your own post, feel free to use or edit the banner above, and follow the rules below:

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but donโ€™t give anything else about the book away just yet โ€“ you need to hook the reader first
  • Finallyโ€ฆ reveal the book!

If youโ€™re using Twitter, donโ€™t forget to use #FirstLinesFridays!

Hello, reader!

We’ve made it through another week and I can actually enjoy this Friday because I’m not working this weekend! Woo! But, of course, we’re all excited about Friday for another reason, right? Because it’s First Lines Friday day!

Okay, maybe just I’m excited, but stick with me, yeah?

Today, I’m featuring a book that I randomly picked up at the library because I’ve been hearing a lot about it. It’s a thriller that has one of my favorite tropes! But, no more hints right now… time to get to the post.

The Line(s):

“Jacob Finch Bonner, the once promising author of the “New & Noteworthy” (The New York Times Book Review) novel The Invention of Wonder, let himself into the office he’d been assigned on the second floor of Richard Peng Hall, set his beat-up leather satchel on the barren desk, and looked around in something akin to despair.”

The Hints:

This thriller is a book about books, which sounds like my perfect thriller!

It was just released in May of this year.

It asks the questions: does taking the story idea of a dead person count as theft?

The Reveal:

Goodreads Synopsis

“Jacob Finch Bonner was once a promising young novelist with a respectably published first book. Today, he’s teaching in a third-rate MFA program and struggling to maintain what’s left of his self-respect; he hasn’t written–let alone published–anything decent in years. When Evan Parker, his most arrogant student, announces he doesn’t need Jake’s help because the plot of his book in progress is a sure thing, Jake is prepared to dismiss the boast as typical amateur narcissism. But then… he hears the plot.

Jake returns to the downward trajectory of his own career and braces himself for the supernova publication of Evan Parker’s first novel: but it never comes. When he discovers that his former student has died, presumably without ever completing his book, Jake does what any self-respecting writer would do with a story like that–a story that absolutely needs to be told.

In a few short years, all of Evan Parker’s predictions have come true, but Jake is the author enjoying the wave. He is wealthy, famous, praised and read all over the world. But at the height of his glorious new life, an e-mail arrives, the first salvo in a terrifying, anonymous campaign: You are a thief, it says.

As Jake struggles to understand his antagonist and hide the truth from his readers and his publishers, he begins to learn more about his late student, and what he discovers both amazes and terrifies him. Who was Evan Parker, and how did he get the idea for his “sure thing” of a novel? What is the real story behind the plot, and who stole it from whom?

Hailed as breathtakingly suspenseful, Jean Hanff Korelitz’sย The Plotย is a propulsive read about a story too good not to steal, and the writer who steals it.

Current Reads

  • Hydra by Matt Wesolowski: I started this series last month with some of the Write Reads gang. I enjoyed the first book, Six Stories, though it took me a minute to get into the podcast style. This book, however, has instantly gripped and I’m finding it hard to stick to the reading schedule. It’s dark and creepy and I want to know what is actually going on! I’m really getting into this series and I’m excited to continue with the buddy read.
  • The Girl Who Speaks Bear by Sophie Anderson: This is the July book for Middle Grade Marvels and I’m absolutely loving it! This is another one where I’m having a hard time sticking to the schedule, lol. I don’t read a lot of books that are based around Slavic culture, but this book is making me think I need to switch that up soon. It’s got a wonderful, wintery feel and I’m loving all the little folktales that are peppered throughout. I can’t wait to continue!

Zodiac Sign Book Tag

Hello, reader!

It’s time for another tag! Now, I’m not someone who is super into astrology. I can’t tell you what are the typical characteristics of signs (that aren’t mine, lol) and I know nothing of the difference between your moon sign, rising sign, and all that. But I do book tags and I learning about the various signs! So I’ve been very excited to get to this tag.

Before we dive in, though, I want to thank the lovely Becky @ Becky’s Book Blog for tagging me! I’m sorry it’s taken me forever to get to it ๐Ÿ˜… Becky runs a fantastic bookish blog that I think anyone could love. Definitely go check her out and maybe give her a follow!

Alright, now let’s get to the tag!

The Rules:

  • Link back to the creator, Just Dreamland
  • Link back to the person who tagged you!
  • Answer all the prompts.
  • Use the original graphics and credit the creator (The graphics don’t seem to work anymore soooo *shrug*)
  • Tag at least 5 bloggers and provide links to their blogs.
  • Name your Zodiac sign!
  • Donโ€™t forget to add #ItsAZodiacThing tag.
  • You can either do the zodiac book tag /the zodiac music tag or both of them. Graphics for separate tags should be given at the end.
  • Enjoy!

The Prompts:

Well, I’m a Virgo. Virgos are, apparently, hard-working, creative, reliable, critical, and stubborn which… I can see, lol. Now to get to the prompts!

ARIES: A wild and powerful book, compelling from start to finish. Every page intoxicated your heart with incredible imagery.

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse

“Wild” and “powerful” are definitely two words I would use to describe Black Sun! This book was a ride and half from page one onward. I loved everything about this tale, but one of my favorite things was definitely the vivid imagery that runs throughout. You feel like you’re in the world of Tova as you read and it is fantastic! I can’t wait for the sequel, which just had a cover/title reveal. If it’s half as amazing as this book, it’s gonna blow me out of the water.

TAURUS: A heart-wrenching story of a forbidden love that could tear a family apart

What Beauty There Is by Cory Anderson

Nothing describes this story better than “heart-wrenching”. This was a dark, atmospheric thriller that has a forbidden romance running throughout. It is also potentially triggering, so please check trigger and content warnings before giving it a go! Still, I fell into this story quickly and was completely wrapped up in the unfolding drama. It’s beautifully written and I’m glad I got a chance to pick it up as part of a The Write Reads blog tour.

GEMINI: A book that is cheeky, quippy, and witty

Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch

One of my favorite things about the Rivers of London series is the witty and funny tone. The main character, Peter Grant, is most definitely cheeky, quippy, and witty and that bleeds into the overall tone of the story. I have laughed out loud numerous times and it just bring the story to another level, in my opinion. This series has been incredible, so far, and I can’t wait to continue!

Hello, reader!

We’ve made it to another Friday and that means it’s time to do one of my favorite bookish memes: First Lines Friday! Today, I’m featuring a book that I just started yesterday and I’m already completely hooked. It’s a middle grade fantasy that is the July pick for Middle Grade Marvels and I think it’s gonna be a wild ride! But before I give everything away, let’s see if you can guess what the book is from the first few lines and a couple of hints.

The Line(s):

“I remember the bear who raised me. Nuzzling my face into her warm belly. Huge furry limbs shielding me from the biting snow. I remember the deep rumbles of her snores through the silent winter, and clouds of steamy breath smelling of berries and pine nuts.”

The Hints:

This book is based on Slavic folklore.

It’s a great book to read if you’re looking for winter vibes.

There’s an animal companion!

The Reveal:

Goodreads Synopsis

The newest heart-expanding, magical adventure from Sophie Anderson, author of the critically acclaimedย House with Chicken Legs.
“They call me Yanka the Bear. Not because of where I was found. Only a few people know about that. They call me Yanka the Bear because I am so big and strong.”

Discovered in a bear cave as a baby, 12-year-old Yanka dreams of knowing who she really is. Although Yanka is happy at home with her loving foster mother, she feels out of place in the village where the other children mock her for her unusual size and strength.

So when Yanka wakes up one morning to find her legs have become bear legs, she knows she has no choice but to leave her village. She has to find somewhere she truly belongs, so she ventures into the Snow Forest with her pet weasel, Mousetrap, in search of the truth about her past.

But deep in the forest there are many dangers and Yanka discovers that even the most fantastic stories she grew up hearing are true. And just as she draws close to discovering who she really is, something terrifying happens that could trap her in the forest . . . forever.”

Lo Denham’s sister disappeared into The Unity Project when she was a young girl and, years later, Lo takes it upon herself to save her sister from them.

Favorite Quote

“Having a sister, mom says, is a place only the two of them will share, made of secrets they never have to say aloud – but if they did, it would be in a language only the two of them could speak. Mid-year Freak Out 2021 Book Tag

Hello, reader!

June is over which means that we are over halfway done with 2021. Which, frankly, blows my mind. I don’t know if this year seems like it’s speeding by because 2020 was such a freakin’ slog, but I can’t believe it’s already July! But, seeming as we are past the midpoint of the year, it’s time to do the Mid-year Freak Out Book Tag! This tag is all over the bookish community, but I most recently read the tag that Fiona @ Fi’s Bibliofiles did. You should check out her blog because it is fantastic! Also, if anyone knows who originally created this tag, let me know so that I can properly credit them.

Alright, time to get to the tag!

The Questions:

WHAT IS THE BEST BOOK THAT YOUโ€™VE READ SO FAR IN 2021?

I’ve only had 5 five star reads so far in 2021, but even if I had 100 by now, Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse would still be at the top! This book was SO GOOD. Like… it’s hard for me to explain in words how good this book was, even though I want to tell everyone about it because everyone needs to read it. Seriously, it’s incredible!

This is the beginning of an epic fantasy series set in Mesoamerica before colonization. It’s a beautiful and evocative tale that follows multiple characters as they prepare, in their own way, for the coming eclipse. Oh, and one of them may possibly be turning into a god. Everything about this story hooked me in and, though it’s a bigger book, I found myself flying through the pages. You can read my slightly more coherent review here!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITEย SEQUEL OF THE FIRST HALF OF THE YEAR?

I just started the Rivers of London series this year, but I’m already loving it so much. So far, the second book in the series, Moon Over Soho, has been my favorite! It felt like the series really hit it’s stride in that book and it’s been steadily fantastic ever since.

This series follows a policeman, Peter Grant, who discovers there is an entire magical department of the London Met that no one talks about. He soon finds himself as the newest (and only) wizard in training and it just gets better from there. There’s something about the combination of fantasy and a crime thriller just hits perfectly, I swear. It doesn’t sound like it would work, but it truly does! It helps that Ben Aaronovitch has a great, conversational tone to his writing and his main character, Peter, is just as sarcastic as I am. It makes for a very fun time!

Current Reads

  • Witches Steeped in Gold by Ciannon Smart: I’m reading this with a few of the folks from the Write Reads gang and, so far, I’m enjoying my time with it! Am I kind of confused? Yes. But I’m still completely sucked in by the imagery and the plot, so I’m having a good time, lol. I’ve also only completed part one as our vacation last week put me behind. You would think I would read more on vacay, but that was not the case! Either way, this is the story of two Jamaican witches who should hate each other having to work together to overthrow a common foe. I’m intrigued and excited to continue!
  • Foxglove Summer by Ben Aaronovitch: This is the fifth book in the Rivers of London series, which I have been buddy reading since the beginning of the year and loving! I think Moon Over Soho continues to be my fave, but I’m liking this one so far. Our main character, Peter, is on the case of two missing girls which, at first, doesn’t appear to be magic-related. But, of course, it wouldn’t be a Rivers of London novel without some magical funny business. I’m behind on this buddy read, as well, but what I’ve read so far, I’ve enjoyed.

Blog Tour: Mirrorland by Carole Johnstone

Hello, reader!

Today, I’m bringing you another blog tour post for the ever wonderful The Write Reads! If you’re a blogger and have been looking for a blog tour company you might want to try, I can’t recommend Dave highly enough. Beyond the fact that he’s awesome, the last three tours I’ve done have all been books I’ve absolutely adored!

But I’m getting ahead of myself, aren’t I? I haven’t talked about the book I’ll be reviewing for this tour post! Today, I’m talking about a dark and frightening thriller that had me up until 3 in the morning because I could not put it down. The fact that it’s a debut novel absolutely blows my mind! Come with me as I dive into the world of Mirrorland by Carole Johnstone!

Well, first let me start by thanking Dave @ The Write Reads, the publisher, Scribner, and Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my participation with this tour and an honest review. And extra special thanks has to go out for the beautiful finished hardback Scribner sent my way! It is, as always, very much appreciated.

Okay! Now to gush about this book!

Synopsis

Twelve years ago my life began again.

But it was a lie.

With the startling twists of Gone Girl and the haunting emotional power of Room, Mirrorland is the story of twin sisters, the man they both love, and the dark childhood they canโ€™t leave behind.

Cat lives in Los Angeles, about as far away as she can get from her estranged twin sister El and No. 36 Westeryk Road, the imposing gothic house in Edinburgh where they grew up. As girls, they invented Mirrorland, a dark, imaginary place under the pantry stairs full of pirates, witches, and clowns. These days Cat rarely thinks about their childhood home, or the fact that El now lives there with her husband Ross.

But when El mysteriously disappears after going out on her sailboat, Cat is forced to return to the grand old house, which has scarcely changed in twenty years. No. 36 Westeryk Road is still full of shadowy, hidden corners, and at every turn Cat finds herself stumbling on long-held secrets and terrifying ghosts from the past. Because someoneโ€”El?โ€”has left Cat clues all over the house: a treasure hunt that leads right back to Mirrorland, where she knows the truth lies crouched and waitingโ€ฆ A sharply crafted mystery about love and betrayal, redemption and revenge, Mirrorland is a propulsive, page-turning debut about the power of imagination and the price of freedom. Perfect for fans of Gillian Flynn, Ruth Ware, and Daphne du Maurier.”
