Book Blogger Hop: Dec 18 – 24

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created byย Crazy-For-Booksย and is currently being hosted byย Coffee Addicted Writer. Every Friday, a new question is posted for book bloggers to answer in the coming week. The purpose of the hop is connection and community. You can discover new blogs to follow, new books to read, and you may end up with some new followers, as well!

Hello, reader!

It’s been a minute since I’ve done a Book Blogger Hop. As in, I haven’t done one since October ๐Ÿ˜… But, when I read the question for this week, I knew I wanted to join in! You’ll see why in a moment.

This Week’s Question

Do you have any bookish ornaments on your Christmas tree?

This week’s prompt submitted byย Billy @ย Coffee Addicted Writer.

I’ve probably mentioned this before, but Hamlet is my all-time favorite Shakespeare play. I’ve read it multiple times. I’ve seen several of the adaptations. I even had a couple of monologues memorized for awhile in college for absolutely no reason. I just liked them ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพโ€โ™€๏ธ Years ago, my best friend told me she had to give me part of my Christmas present early. She knows I tend to be a “open presents on Christmas ONLY” kind of person, so I wondered why she was so insistent that it had to be before Christmas.

Well, this was the present:

Look at him! It’s a little tiny Hamlet ornament with a tiny skull!! I love him so much and he’s always the first ornament I hang on the tree every year ๐Ÿ’– I’m also the only one allowed to hang him up because he has to go in the perfect spot, lol. This BBH makes me realize that Tiny Hamlet is the only bookish ornament I own, however. I think it’s time to start rectifying this situation *nod*

If you celebrate Christmas, do you have any bookish ornaments that you put on your Christmas tree? Let me know in the comments!

And, as always, happy reading!

Down the TBR Hole #7

Itโ€™s time for a new round ofย Down the TBR Hole! This is where I go through my Goodreads โ€˜Want to Readโ€™ shelf and do a bit of cleaning up. If you want to see the full description of what this post is all about, check out my first roundย HERE.

Alright, let’s review where we were at the end of the last round. I ended round six with 617 books on my ‘Want to Read’ shelf. Honestly, that number seems to be the norm for my TBR, lol. Every time I take books off, I somehow manage to add enough to stay right around there. Case in point, my TBR is currently sitting at 618 books. Only one added book, though, so that’s a plus! I’ve done much better this past week, haha. But now, it’s time to try to bring that number down (and keep it down).

Let’s jump into round seven!

Life of Pi by Yann Martel

I remember when this book came out and it was just everywhere. I’m going to be honest, I was first intrigued because I heard there was a tiger involved, lol. But I never picked it up because literary fiction I have a complex relationship. And then movie came out and I could not get through it. It makes me nervous to actually pick up the book. I’m still drawn towards this story, though, so I think I’ll keep it around a little bit longer.

Verdict: Keep

It Shouldn’t Happen to a Vet by James Herriot

Upon reading the synopsis of this book, I think I’ve already read it??? It says that this is the next book after All Creatures Great and Small and I read all of James Herriot’s books about his life when I was a kid! But I don’t remember this being the title… so now I’m confused. I suppose the best way to find out is to re-read it which I’m certainly not adverse to! Perhaps it’s time to re-read all of his books for nostalgic purposes.

first lines friday

First Lines Friday #2

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted byย Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged itย by its opening lines? ย If you want to make your own post, feel free to use or edit the banner above, and follow the rules below:

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but donโ€™t give anything else about the book away just yet โ€“ you need to hook the reader first
  • Finallyโ€ฆ reveal the book!

If youโ€™re using Twitter, donโ€™t forget to use #FirstLinesFridays!

Hello, reader!

We’ve arrived at another glorious Friday and, even though I work this weekend, I’m pretty ecstatic. This has been a loooooong week, let me tell ya. If I never see another Covid-19 test, it will be too soon ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

But let’s not focus on the stresses of the lab. It’s time to do this week’s First Lines Friday! I always have a lot of fun trying to guess the books in everyone’s post, though I am notoriously terrible at it. Today, I have a completely different sort of book than the one I featured last week. Let’s see if these first lines will clue you in.

The Line(s):

“The student union’s coffee shop was like a bad pop song: painfully repetitive and unnaturally upbeat. Milk was steamed, names were chirped, and baristas beamed as if there were any call for such abominably perky behavior.”

Any guesses?

Ok, so I cheated a little and skipped the prologue and picked the first lines from chapter one. So I suppose I’ll give you some hints.

It’s the second book in a companion novel series

The cover is a bright, cheerful yellow

The main character in this book is related to the main character in the first novel of the series

Goodreads Synopsis

Talia Hibbert returns with another charming romantic comedy about a young woman who agrees to fake date her friend after a video of him โ€œrescuingโ€ her from their office building goes viral…

Danika Brown knows what she wants: professional success, academic renown, and an occasional roll in the hay to relieve all that career-driven tension. But romance? Been there, done that, burned the T-shirt. Romantic partners, whatever their gender, are a distraction at best and a drain at worst. So Dani asks the universe for the perfect friend-with-benefitsโ€”someone who knows the score and knows their way around the bedroom.

When brooding security guard Zafir Ansari rescues Dani from a workplace fire drill gone wrong, itโ€™s an obvious sign: PhD student Dani and ex-rugby player Zaf are destined to sleep together. But before she can explain that fact, a video of the heroic rescue goes viral. Now half the internet is shipping #DrRugbaeโ€”and Zaf is begging Dani to play along. Turns out, his sports charity for kids could really use the publicity. Lying to help children? Who on earth would refuse?

Daniโ€™s plan is simple: fake a relationship in public, seduce Zaf behind the scenes. The trouble is, grumpy Zafโ€™s secretly a hopeless romanticโ€”and heโ€™s determined to corrupt Daniโ€™s stone-cold realism. Before long, heโ€™s tackling her fears into the dirt. But the former sports star has issues of his own, and the walls around his heart are as thick as his… um, thighs.

Suddenly, the easy lay Dani dreamed of is more complex than her thesis. Has her wish backfired? Is her focus being tested? Or is the universe just waiting for her to take a hint?”

I am realizing now that I missed the prime opportunity to use the fact that this book is called Take a Hint, Dani Brown in the hints that I gave you. Rookie move, Kerri! Either way, I recently borrowed this book from the library and I’m so excited to give it a go! I had a great time with the first book in this series, Get a Life, Chloe Brown, and this little snippet alone makes me think I’m going to love this one just as much.

Have you read this book? Did those first few lines capture your attention? Let me know in the comments!

And, as always, happy reading!

Can’t Wait Wednesday: Dec 16, 2020

Canโ€™t-Wait Wednesday is a meme where you get to flail about whatever upcoming book youโ€™re excited to read. Though it is generally a new release, it certainly can be any book thatโ€™s on your TBR! This meme is currently hosted by Wishful Endings and itโ€™s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.

Hello, reader!

Usually, I fill up my Wednesdays answering what books I’m reading, what books I’ve finished, and what books I plan on reading next. I realized this week, though, that my WWW Wednesday would look exactly the same as last week’s ๐Ÿ˜… So, in place of my usual WWW Wednesday post, I’ll be doing another post that has kind of fallen by the wayside: Can’t Wait Wednesday!

We’re on the precipice of a new year, so there are a ton of books I can’t wait to get me hands on. Today, however, I’m going to focus on one I haven’t talked about nearly enough. This is a book by an author that is one of my favorite sci-fi writers. I’ve loved both of the books I’ve read by him and one of them is one of my favorite books of all time. His writing has a wonderful blend of humor and science that I adore. His newest book features:

  • A quest in space!
  • A main character with amnesia!
  • And the fate of the world resting squarely on our main character’s shoulders!

The book I’m speaking of is…

Goodreads Synopsis:

A lone astronaut must save the earth from disaster in this incredible new science-based thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Martian.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission–and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.

Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, he realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Alone on this tiny ship that’s been cobbled together by every government and space agency on the planet and hurled into the depths of space, it’s up to him to conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.

And thanks to an unexpected ally, he just might have a chance.

Part scientific mystery, part dazzling interstellar journey, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martian–while taking us to places it never dreamed of going.”

Publication Date: May 24th, 2021

Pre-order here: Bookshop::Indiebound::TBD::B&N::Amazon

Why I’m Excited:

The Martian is one of my favorite books of all time. Though I seem to be in the minority, I thought Artemis was great, as well! It stands to reason that I’ll probably love whatever Andy Weir writes. Also, this sounds like it’s going to be heart-pounding in a quiet yet dramatic way, kind of like The Martian. I’m excited to devour it like I did his other two books!

What is a book you canโ€™t wait to get your hands on? Did you do your own Canโ€™t Wait Wednesday post? Let me know in the comments!

And, as always, happy reading!

End of the Year Book Tag 2020

Hello, reader!

It’s time for another tag! And this one seems especially appropriate as it’s the End of the Year Book Tag. I know we have a few weeks yet til 2021, but I’m already in planning mode for the new year. As 2020 winds down, I like to try and wrap a lot of my reading up so I can start the next year fresh. This tag will help me see what books I need to prioritize in the next few weeks!

I want to thank the incredible Danni @ _ForBooksSake for tagging me! Her blog is awesome, as is her taste in thrillers, so y’all should definitely check her out! I’m not sure who originated this tag, but if I find out, I will make sure to let you know.

Alright, let’s get to the tag!

#1. Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?

Even though I’m scared, I’m determined to finish The Dragon Republic by R.F. Kuang! I’m only a chapter in, but I’m already so nervous, lol. I’m excited to continue Rin’s story and, at the same time, I know it’s gonna hurt me. Either way, though, I really want to finish this before going into 2021.

Also, this is a library loan and it’s due back soon ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

#2. Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year?

Probably should have answered this more towards the beginning of autumn… whoops!

Well, that being said, the first book that popped into my head was Small Spaces by Katherine Arden. This book practically screams fall and might even make you scream a little. It’s a middle grade horror that even gave this hardened horror-lover some minor chills. Scarecrows are creepy, y’all. It’s also a short read, so it seems like a book I wouldn’t mind re-read around fall every year.

#5OnMyTBR – Animals

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted byย E. @ Local Bee Hunterโ€™s Nookย where you chose five books from your to-be-read pile that fit that weekโ€™s theme. If youโ€™d like more info, head over to theย announcement post!

Hello, reader!

It’s once again Monday and, can I just say, I’m super excited about this week’s 5 On My TBR theme! Why is that? Because this week, we’re focusing on one of my favorite topics: animals! There are a lot of ways you can take this theme. Are we looking for animals on the cover? Animal companions? Animals as main characters? I’m going with any and all of these apply! My list of five is a mix of a few interpretations, but they are all books I can’t wait to read.

#1. A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan

This is one of those books that I put on my TBR forever ago and kind of forgot about. But it’s also one that sounds incredibly interesting! It’s about a woman who wants to be a dragon naturalist which, come on, how can you not want to read that? Women scientists and dragons all in one book! Also, I absolutely love the cover ๐Ÿ˜ One day I will pick this one up, perhaps sooner than later now that I’ve been reminded how much I want to read it, lol.

Oh and it clearly fits the theme since it’s centered around dragons!

#2. Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin

While this book doesn’t feature an animal, per se, it certainly has one in the title! The main character also has wolf tattoos according to the synopsis, so I think that counts ๐Ÿ˜‚ She’s also a skinshifter who is entering a race so she can try and kill Hitler which sounds incredible! I’ve been interested in this book for awhile. I’ve also been hearing a lot about it, lately, which makes me even more excited to pick it up! Perhaps it’ll be one of my first reads in 2021?

Down the TBR Hole #6

Hello, reader!

Itโ€™s time for a new round ofย Down the TBR Hole! This is where I go through my Goodreads โ€˜Want to Readโ€™ shelf and do a bit of cleaning up. If you want to see the full description of what this post is all about, check out my first roundย HERE.

Last round saw my TBR sitting at 618 books after I went on a little bit of an adding spree ๐Ÿ˜… Did I manage to keep the TBR additions to a minimum this week? Welp, the current number of books on my ‘Want to Read’ shelf are… 621 books. So… not terrible? I should probably just accept that this is just who I am as a person, lol. Still, it’s not as bad as last week and I’m still getting books I’m no longer interested in off my TBR. I count that as a win!

With that said, let’s jump into round six!

Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie

Kicking things off with another classic! I have to admit, growing up on Disney films, Peter Pan was one of my least favorite of all of them. And yet I’m still intrigued by the story. Perhaps the source material will prove to be more interesting to me? Who knows, but I’m willing to find out!

Verdict: Keep

America (The Book): A Citizen’s Guide to Democracy Inaction by Jon Stewart

Here’s a little fact about me: I absolutely loved The Daily Show when Jon Stewart was the host. I used to watch it religiously! So I’ve been wanting to read this book for awhile. I find Jon Stewart’s brand of humor matches mine quite well and it makes topics I typically find kind of boring become interesting. Which means this one gets to stay until I eventually get it read.

Verdict: Keep

The Story of Doctor Dolittle by Hugh Lofting

This is another one of those books that I added to my TBR because I loved the movie so much. I’m talking about the older Dolittle movie, way before Eddie Murphy and the more recent one. A story about a man that can talk to animals seems like it would be right up my alley! I can’t tell you how many times little Kerri wished she could talk to all her pets, lol. I’m honestly not sure what to expect from this book as it was originally published in the 1920s, but I’m interested enough to find out.

Arent Hayes howled in pain as a rock slammed into his massive back.
Another whistled by his ear, a third striking his knee, causing him to stumble, bringing jeers from the pitiless mob, who were already searching the ground for missiles to throw.

Any guesses?

And the book is…
