Blog Tour: Marrow Charm by Kristin Jacques

Hello, reader!

Today, I’m bringing you a special blog tour post. Last year, I was a panelist for a wonderful new award called the Book Blogger Novel of the Year Award (BBNYA)! BBNYA is a yearly competition where book bloggers from all over the world read and score books written by indie authors. I was lucky enough to read a great array of indie books, from fantasy to thrillers and more! One of the books I got to read and absolutely loved was Marrow Charm by Kristin Jacques, which ended up winning 6th place. I’m not at all surprised that this book made it to the finals because it was incredible! Of course, I received this book to read and review as part of the BBNYA 2020 competition organized by the @The_WriteReads tours team. I want to thank them so much for sending me a free copy of the e-book so I could participate in the awards! All opinions are my own, unbiased, and completely honest.

Before we talk about the book, though, here’s a bit more about BBNYA. If you are an author and wish to learn more about the 2021 BBNYA competition, you can visit the official website (https://www.bbnya.com/) or our Twitter account, @BBNYA_Official. If you would like to sign-up and enter your book, you can find the BBNYA 2021 AUTHOR SIGN UP FORM HERE. Please make sure to carefully read our terms and conditions before entering.

If you are a book blogger or reviewer, you can apply to be part of BBNYA 2021 by filling out this form (also remember to read the terms and conditions before signing up)!  BBNYA is brought to you in association with the Folio Society (If you love beautiful books you NEED to check out their website!) and the book blogger support group TheWriteReads.

Alright, on to the post!

Synopsis

“Azure โ€˜Azzyโ€™ Brimvine lives in a world decimated by magic, where humans have retreated underground from the overwhelming dangers of the surface. But Below is no safer than Above.

Magic borne plagues continue to eat away at the remaining human cities, a sickness that doesnโ€™t merely kill, but creates aberrations from the stricken: people twisted by magic into something dark, dangerous, and powerful. It is an existence of fear and constant dread. When Azzyโ€™s brother, Armin, is infected and cast out into the Above, she sets out after him, determined to be there for him no matter what he becomes.

The world Above is full of monsters, both wild and cunning, some more human than Azzy was led to believe. Armin is captured and bound for the Auction block of Avergard, a ruthless city of inhuman lords and twisted creatures. To reach him, Azzy must brave the perils of the Above and the chaotic life forms created by the Gate. To reach him, she must find allies and forge new bonds in this broken world.

And Azzy must reach him, before Arminโ€™s new power is used to open the Gate once more.”

Blog Tour: Wings of Ebony by J. Elle

Hello, reader!

I’ve just been on a roll with great fantasy reads, lately, and today, I’m excited to talk to you about yet another one! Wings of Ebony by J. Elle is a book that first popped on my radar last year when I saw the magnificent color. When I discovered it was a new YA fantasy that features Black Girl Magic, I knew I was going to read it. That’s why I was so excited to be offered a spot on the book tour being run by Caffeine Book Tours! There are, of course, many other wonderful bloggers, bookstagrammers, and Booktubers on this tour. If you’d like to see the schedule and check out their content, click here.

Before we get more into my tour stop post, I want to thank Caffeine Book Tours and the publisher, Simon & Schuster, for providing me with a free e-ARC in exchange for my participation in this tour. It is, as always, very much appreciated!

Alright, now let’s talk about this fascinating book!

Synopsis

“‘Make a way out of no way’ is just the way of life for Rue. But when her mother is shot dead on her doorstep, life for her and her younger sister changes forever. Rue’s taken from her neighborhood by the father she never knew, forced to leave her little sister behind, and whisked away to Ghizonโ€”a hidden island of magic wielders.

Rue is the only half-god, half-human there, where leaders protect their magical powers at all costs and thrive on human suffering. Miserable and desperate to see her sister on the anniversary of their motherโ€™s death, Rue breaks Ghizonโ€™s sacred Do Not Leave Law and returns to Houston, only to discover that Black kids are being forced into crime and violence. And her sister, Tasha, is in danger of falling sway to the very forces that claimed their motherโ€™s life.

Worse still, evidence mounts that the evil plaguing East Row is the same one that lurks in Ghizonโ€”an evil that will stop at nothing until it has stolen everything from her and everyone she loves. Rue must embrace her true identity and wield the full magnitude of her ancestorsโ€™ power to save her neighborhood before the gods burn it to the ground.”

Today on the blog, I’m bringing you another tour post! This tour is being run by TBR & Beyond Tours and, when I read the synopsis for this book, I knew I wanted in. I’ll be talking about a new YA fantasy with rebels, princes, and magic called Of Silver and Shadow by Jennifer Gruenke. And, not for nothing, but the cover is absolutely gorgeous! Before I continue, I want to thank TBR & Beyond Tours, the publisher, Flux, and Netgalley for providing me with a free e-ARC in exchange for my participation with this tour and an honest review. I always appreciate it!

And now, let’s talk about the book!

Synopsis

“Ren Kolins is a silver wielderโ€”a dangerous thing to be in the kingdom of Erdis, where magic has been outlawed for a century. Ren is just trying to survive, sticking to a life of petty thievery, card games, and pit fighting to get by. But when a wealthy rebel leader discovers her secret, he offers her a fortune to join his revolution. The caveat: she wonโ€™t see a single coin until they overthrow the King.

Behind the castle walls, a brutal group of warriors known as the Kingโ€™s Children is engaged in a competition: the first to find the rebel leader will be made Kingโ€™s Fang, the right hand of the King of Erdis. And Adley Farre is hunting down the rebels one by one, torturing her way to Ren and the rebel leader, and the coveted Kingโ€™s Fang title.

But time is running out for all of them, including the youngest Prince of Erdis, who finds himself pulled into the rebellion. Political tensions have reached a boiling point, and Ren and the rebels must take the throne before war breaks out.”

wrap up

January 2021 Wrap Up

Hello, reader!

We’re into the second week in February, so I figured it was about time I wrapped up my reading in January. I’m planning on doing things a little bit differently this year. I’m not going to be including my year-long reading challenges in my wrap ups anymore because all it did was cause me stress ๐Ÿ˜… It felt like I was barely doing anything because I would only have one or two books a month in that section! I’ll be keeping track of that separately and talk about it in a dedicated post, I think. I’m also only going to focus on my best book of the month as opposed to doing highs and lows. This is because what may be a low for me might be someone else’s favorite book and I always felt bad drawing attention to the fact that I just didn’t jive with it. We’re focusing on the positive in this blog! Of course, that’s not to say that I’ll never talk about books I didn’t like (it’s part of being a reviewer… you can’t enjoy every book!) but I’m not going to make it such a feature, ya know?

Alright, enough blabber. Let’s get to my first wrap up of the new year!

Book: The Dragon Republic by R.F. Kuang

Rating: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Thoughts: This book was as good, if not better, than the first one in the series! The Poppy War hurts and this book was no different, but, for some reason, I welcome the pain. Rin’s story is just so compelling and it’s interesting to watch her rise and descent.

Book: Fly Free by Allison Rose

Rating: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Thoughts: This was a quick, enjoyable read that throws you into the land and intrigue of the land of fae. I really enjoyed the plot and the world-building, though the love interests (and the romance, in general) fell a little flat for me. You can read my full review here.

Book: Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert

Rating: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Thoughts: Ahhhh, this was so CUTE! I absolutely loved the romance between Dani and Zafir ๐Ÿ˜ This was the perfect mix of adorable and steamy. I can’t wait to get my hands on the last Brown Sisters book!

Blog Tour: Wench by Maxine Kaplan

Hello, reader!

It’s time for another blog tour and this is for a most unusual book which takes the concept of Medieval tavern wench and twists it into knots. I’m happy to be joining in on the tour for Wench by Maxine Kaplan! This tour is hosted by TBR & Beyond Tours, who are always a complete pleasure to work with. If you are a book blogger/bookstgrammer/Booktuber, you should definitely give their website a peek. You can find information about upcoming tours and, most importantly to this post, a schedule for the Wench book tour!

I want to give a hearty thank you to both TBR & Beyond Tours and the publisher for providing me with an e-ARC of this book in exchange for my participation with the tour. It is greatly appreciated! It sometimes still boggles my mind that I’m lucky enough to participated in opportunities such as these and I’m forever grateful.

All that said, let’s jump into the post!

Synopsis

A funny, fiercely feminist YA epic fantasyโ€”following the adventures of a tavern wench

Tanya has worked at her tavern since she was able to see over the bar. She broke up her first fight at 11. By the time she was a teenager she knew everything about the place, and she could run it with her eyes closed. Sheโ€™d never let anyoneโ€”whether it be a drunkard or a captain of the queenโ€™s guardโ€”take advantage of her. But when her guardian dies, she might lose it all: the bar, her home, her purpose in life. So she heads out on a quest to petition the queen to keep the tavern in her nameโ€”dodging unscrupulous guards, a band of thieves, and a powerful, enchanted feather that seems drawn to her. Fast-paced, magical, and unapologetically feminist, Wench is epic fantasy like youโ€™ve never seen it before.”

Blog Tour: Fly Free by Allison Rose

Hello, reader!

Welcome to my first blog tour of 2021! It seems fitting that my first tour would be with the first tour company I ever joined. Storytellers on Tour does a fabulous job of highlighting indie fantasy and science fiction writers and I’ve always enjoyed working with them. Those are two of my favorite genres, after all! Today on the blog, I’ll be highlighting a fantasy story focused on the twisty world of faeries called Fly Free.

Before I jump into my post, I want to thank Storytellers on Tour and the author, Allison Rose, for providing me with a free copy of her book in exchange for participation with this tour! It was much appreciated, as always! I’m only one stop on this tour, of course. There are a lot of incredible bloggers and Bookstagammers participating from January 10th – 16th! You can check out the banner below to see the schedule or click it to be taken to the SoT website where links should be available.

Synopsis

“In the land of Faerie, lies are easily disguised as truths.

They were raised like sisters, the heir to the Court of the Day and her guardian.

And as rebellion darkens the land of the Dayโ€”and the faeries of Court fall under a dark magic that disconnects them from the land, dooming them to a slow, agonizing deathโ€”they will question all they know to be true.

Sevelle, the Light of the Day, is destined to rule one day. She possesses a rare form of magic, the ability to heal the powerful connection between faeries and the magic in the land, the connection that gives them lifeโ€”if only she could figure out how to use this magic, or even find it within herself.

Jae lives in the shadows, watching over Sevelle as her guardian and listening to the whispers of Court brought to her by the winds. She longs for a life outside of Court, but knows her duty to Sevelle is more important than her own desires.

But when an unexpected proposition comes from none other than Lex, son of the rebel leader, Sevelle and Jae realize their lives will never be the sameโ€”and that evil may be within their own court more so than in the rebels that oppose them.

Walking paths far different than they imagined separates the sisters, but then a secret is revealed that may break them apart forever.

Fly Free is the first installment of the Light of Faerie series. Enter a land of magic in the midst of a power struggle, where all is not as it seems and love may be found in the most unlikely places.”

Favorite Quote

“When had she last been this scared? Had she felt this paralysis, this numbing dread before she stepped into the ring with Nezha two years ago? No, she had been angry then, and proud. She had thought she was invincible. She had been looking forward to the fight, anticipating the bloodlust. That felt stupid now. So, so stupid. War was not a game, where one fought for honor and admiration, where masters would keep her from sustaining any real harm. War was a nightmare.

Mini Reviews: Middle Grade Edition

Hello, reader!

I’ve been reading quite a bit of middle grade recently, all thanks to joining in with Middle Grade Marvels! I had forgotten how much fun middle grade books can be! I do love a whimsical book and I’ve been getting a heavy dose of that lately joining in on the monthly reading for Middle Grade Marvels. But, though I’ve been reading a lot of middle grade, I’ve fallen behind on my reviews. I mean, I’m behind on all of my reviews, but let’s not talk about that ๐Ÿ˜‚ Today’s post is me catching up! I’ll be reviewing three middle grade novels I’ve read and enjoyed recently.

Title: Keeper of the Lost Cities

Author: Shannon Messenger

Genre: Fantasy

Source: Borrowed (Scribd)

CW/TW: Depictions of grief, violence

Rating: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Links: Bookshop::Indiebound::TBD::B&N::Amazon::Goodreads

When this book was picked as the September Middle Grade Marvels read, I have to admit I was stoked. I had heard a lot about this series from people all over the bookish community. And the concept instantly captured my attention! We’re following a young girl who has the ability to read minds. Not that she wants to… ever since Sophie fell and hit her head at the age of five, she has been assaulted by other people’s thoughts. It’s something she’s come to live with as she also keeps it hidden… until she meets a strange boy who seems to know all about her telepathy. Soon, she is whisked into a magical world where she learns that nothing she knew previously was at it seemed.

I have to say, this book was definitely a wild ride! It also did not go where I thought it was going to at first. The pacing will have you tearing through this book at breakneck speeds. I really enjoyed all the fantastical elements of this story and I think the author does a great job of capturing your interest throughout the book. I will say, if you’re not a fan of the Chosen One trope, you might want to give this one a skip because Sophie is about as Chosen as One can get! It even started rubbing me the wrong way and I don’t mind that trope at all. It just felt a little over the top at times. Still, I really enjoyed Sophie as a character and I thought the supporting cast were interesting, as well.

Overall, this book was a lot of fun and it had a lot of heart. Though it is thoroughly entrenched in the Chosen One trope, it was still an enjoyable read, with it’s fast-paced story and lovable characters. I’m definitely interested in continuing the series!
