Top Ten Tuesday: Signs of a Book Lover

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish back in June 2010. It is currently hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl and, as is stated on the blog, it was “born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.”

Hello, readers!

How are we all coping with… *gestures vaguely at everything*. This is my first day off in awhile and I’m spending it as I normally would: Reading and doing other indoor activities. The fam and I are probably going to take a walk later (keeping a good social distance from others, of course) as the sun has decided to show itself. I hope y’all are dealing with everything as best as you are able!

In the form of a temporary distraction, let’s jump into this week’s TTT! This week, my list is composed of signs of a book lover. Well… more specifically signs that I think show that I’m a book lover. People are too different for me to think that the signs that apply to me apply to everybody! But, I digress, let’s talk about the things I think show the world that I am a lover of books.

#1. I always have a book on hand: Whether it’s a physical book, audiobook, or e-book, I can always be found with something that I can start reading if I have a moment or two. This is especially useful now that we live near Boston and often take the train into the city. It’s nice to have a book on hand to lose myself in during the commute.

#2. I have an overabundance of bookmarks: Mostly because I am constantly losing bookmarks 😅

#3. I dream of having my own, personal library: I mean, with the abundance of books that I have, I’m halfway there. What I really dream of is having a dedicated space for my books and reading. Towering bookshelves, a cozy chair, a small table to rest my hot cocoa… *sigh* heaven.

#4. I spend most of my time online doing something bookish: Whether it’s updating my blog, watching Booktube, or scrolling through Book Twitter, most of my time online is spent surrounded in the comforting world of books. I enjoy the online bookish community! It’s nice to see so many book lovers out in the world.

#5. My default when someone asks what I want for birthdays/Christmas/etc is ALWAYS books: Or something book-related, like a Barnes & Noble gift card or, most recently, a Kindle. Just give me all the books and I am a happy girl 😄

#6. The only celebrities I follow on social media are authors: I suppose there are a couple actors/musicians sprinkled in, but, for the most part, it’s strictly authors. And I love it!

#7. I can’t give movie recommendations, but I will wax poetic if you ask me for a book recommendation: I’m not a chatty person, but if you ask me for a book recommendation, I will talk your ear off! I love talking about books (clearly) and helping people find their next favorite read makes me happy. Ask me about other media, though, I will stare at you blankly. It’s not that I don’t enjoy movies or TV shows, but I just can’t stir up the same passion about them.

#8. I don’t like shopping unless it’s book shopping: Seriously, I could spend hours in a bookstore. Especially if there’s a cafe where I can eat a snack to keep my energy up 😂 My husband doesn’t like going to bookstores with me because he basically has to drag me out…

#9. When I move, one of the first things I get in my new city is a library card: I grew up in the military and ended up marrying a military man. I’ve moved a lot. And one of the first things I do in a new city is scope out the local library and sign up for a library card.

#10. My favorite distraction is falling into a book: In a world where we are inundated with different ways to distract our minds, my favorite thing to do is pick up a book and get lost in its pages 💕

Image by Local Bee Hunter’s Nook

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook where you chose five books from your to-be-read pile that fit that week’s theme. If you’d like more info, head over to the announcement post!

It’s time for another #5OnMyTBR and this week’s theme is all about the laughs. The theme for this week is to pick 5 humorous books from your TBR to share! I don’t have a lot of books on my TBR that are marked as strictly humor, so my list is going to be quite an interesting mix. There’s a mix of genres here, but they all promise a good belly laugh or two!

Book Blogger Hop: Mar 27 – Apr 2

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Crazy-For-Books and is currently being hosted by Coffee Addicted Writer. Every Friday, a new question is posted for book bloggers to answer in the coming week. The purpose of the hop is connection and community. You can discover new blogs to follow, new books to read, and you may end up with some new followers, as well!

This Week’s Question

Sooooo… I have three bookshelves and a box filled with books that should have gone on my fourth bookshelf. That got broken during our cross-country move and I still haven’t replaced it. I have to get ready for work, so I don’t have time to get a picture of all of the bookshelves, so I had to pick one. Seeming as I’m trying to focus on reading my owned books this year, I decided to go with my TBR shelf.

There it is in all it’s over-burdened glory! I will say that the stack on top to the far right have been read. There just isn’t any room on my other bookshelves to move them, atm 😅 And I’ve read The Merciful Crow, but I wanted to keep that pretty edition in my bedroom so I could just gaze at whenever I felt the urge, lol. Other than that, every book on that shelf is a book I haven’t read.

Yikes.

And let’s not talk about the books I have downloaded to my Kindle app and the audiobooks waiting for me on my Audible account. I’m pretty well-stocked for this whole COVID-19 situation, at least when it comes to books!

How many bookshelves to you have? Have you read all the books on your shelves? Let me know in the comments!

And, as always, happy reading!

Anonymous Bookaholics Book Tag

Hello, readers!

It’s been awhile since I’ve participated in a bookish tag, hasn’t it? I feel like it has been and I came across the perfect tag. Caffeinated Fae’s blog was featured as #blogoftheday by @TheWriteReads and she was doing the Anonymous Bookaholics Book Tag. I loved her answers and I loved the questions, so I decided to join in on the fun! By the way, you can find her answers here and maybe give her a follow while you’re there 😉

#1. What do you like about buying new books?

Pretty much everything, if I’m being honest. I love the smell of new books. I love flipping through the book for the first time and hearing the sound of the pages. I love looking at the title page and knowing I will be the first person to love that particular book (hopefully). It’s just such a wonderful feeling to have a beautiful new world to discover.

#2. How often do you buy new books?

At least once a month since I’m a member of Book of the Month Club. If I’m not controlling my spending, then I buy several a month. Because I have a problem. Though I suppose that’s not terrible considering some of the book hauls I’ve seen on Booktube!

#3. Bookstore or online book shopping: which do you prefer?

Most definitely bookstores! I could hang out in a bookstore for hours and never get bored. I love the smell and the ambiance and just being surrounded by all that potential. And there’s usually a cafe where I can sit and read in silence while enjoying some kind of pastry. Ugh, I live for those little moments!

#4. Do you have a favorite bookshop?

I sure do! I absolutely love Brookline Booksmith in Brookline, Massachusetts. It’s such a wonderful, indie bookstore that has a wide selection of all kinds of books. I think my favorite thing about them is that they have a used bookstore in the basement! I got a bind-up of The Chronicles of Narnia for like 7 bucks! They have fantastic author events, as well. And they give you cute store bookmarks with every purchase and, as a person who often misplaces her bookmarks, I really appreciate it.

#5. Do you pre-order books?

Honestly, I used to not pay enough attention to book releases to get in on pre-orders. I would just stumble across books in the bookstore or on Goodreads and be like “Ohhh, I want that!” In the last couple of years, though, I’ve been paying more attention and my amount of pre-orders has gone up. I tend to only pre-order books I am absolutely dying to read, so I still keep it to a minimum.

#6. Do you have a monthly buying limit?

When I’m not on a book buying ban? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, nooooo. Because I have no self-control.

Which is why I’m currently on a book buying ban 😬 Perhaps I should give myself a limit so I can still feed the need but not go as crazy as I used to. Moderation is key!

#7. How big is your wish list?

Ya know, not as many as you would think. Well… if we’re just talking about my Amazon wish list. The wish list in my head is a mile long 😂 I just want to read all the books!

#8. Which three books from your wish list do you wish to own right now?

All three of these books aren’t out yet, but I YEARN FOR THEM! I cannot wait to read all three!

If you would like to participate, consider yourself tagged! Let me know about all your book buying habits!

Can’t Wait Wednesday: Mar 25, 2020

Image by Tressa @ Wishful Endings

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a meme where you get to flail about whatever upcoming book you’re excited to read. Though it is generally a new release, it certainly can be any book that’s on your TBR! This meme is currently hosted by Wishful Endings and it’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.

With the general craziness that is the world right now, I’ve been surprisingly busier than one would think. I still have to go to work while most are sequestered to their homes because I work in healthcare. Though I’m certainly not on the front lines, it’s still been a very interesting time. Not to mention trying to make sure the kiddos aren’t falling behind with school stuff. You would think that not being able to go anywhere on my days off would be very conducive to reading, but it’s mostly been conducive to spending time with the family to help them de-stress. Which I’m super okay with 💕

That being said, I haven’t finished a book since my last WWW Wednesday 😅 So we’re going to talk about a book that I’m anticipating, instead! There’s a lot of uncertainty in the book world right now, especially when it comes to publishing, but there are still quite a few books that will be coming out in the next couple of months that I can’t wait to read!

For this week’s Can’t-Wait Wednesday, I’ve decided to highlight one of my most anticipated May releases. Want some hints?

  • There’s knights ⚔
  • There’s a Renaissance Faire 👑
  • There’s FEMINISM 💁🏾‍♀️💪🏾

And the book is… *drum roll*

GoodReads Synopsis:

“Kit Sweetly slays sexism, bad bosses, and bad luck to become a knight at a medieval-themed restaurant.

Working as a wench―i.e. waitress―at a cheesy medieval-themed restaurant in the Chicago suburbs, Kit Sweetly dreams of being a knight like her brother. She has the moves, is capable on a horse, and desperately needs the raise that comes with knighthood, so she can help her mom pay the mortgage and hold a spot at her dream college.

Company policy allows only guys to be knights. So when Kit takes her brother’s place and reveals her identity at the end of the show, she rockets into internet fame and a whole lot of trouble with the management. But the Girl Knight won’t go down without a fight. As other wenches join her quest, a protest forms. In a joust before Castle executives, they’ll prove that gender restrictions should stay medieval―if they don’t get fired first.”

Publication Date (hopefully): May 5th, 2020

Why I’m Excited:

Well… I love Renaissance Faires and I love feminism! I’ve recently discovered that I really enjoy books that are set at a Ren Faire and I need more of it. And the whole concept of this novel makes me want to gobble it up.

Lady knights, for the win!

Top Ten Tuesday: Fiction With A Bookish Twist

Image by That Artsy Reader Girl

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish back in June 2010. It is currently hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl and, as is stated on the blog, it was “born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.”

Hello, readers! It’s time for another Top Ten Tuesday and this week we have a freebie. The theme was Genre Freebie, so we get to build our lists around whatever genre we’re feeling. I feel like I maaaaybe cheated a little bit, but I decided to build a list around one of my favorite things: books about books! My list contains ten fiction books that have some kind of bookish element. There are five that I’ve already read and enjoyed and five that I haven’t read yet, but are definitely on my TBR!

Alright, with all that said, let’s jump into the list 😃

#5OnMyTBR – RomComs

Image by Local Bee Hunter’s Nook

Hello, readers! Today, I’m taking part in a brand new meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook. #5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme where you chose five books from your to-be-read pile that fit that week’s theme. If you’d like more info, head over to the announcement post!

This week’s theme is RomComs. I have mentioned before that I am new to the romance genre, so I’m still learning what I like an don’t like. That being said, I do have five romantic comedies that I’d love to get to soon!

#1. Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

I’ve been wanting to read this since last year, when my random interest in romance novels popped into my brain. All the other romance books I read because of that random interest I ended up loving, so I’m feeling this one is gonna be a winner. Besides, the whole concept of the First Son falling in love with the Prince of Wales just sounds like it’s going to be amazing!

#2. Beach Read by Emily Henry

The rest of the books on my list haven’t come out yet, but I cannot wait for them! Beach Read is publishing in May and centers around two author with severe cases of writer’s block. Augustus writes literary fiction while January writes romances. They meet while on vacation and decide that the best way to combat their mutual writer’s block is by switching genres. The concept sounds like it’s going to be an interesting ride and, perhaps, we’ll get a bit of the “book within a book” trope going on? Either way, it sounds fun!

#3. By the Book by Amanda Sellet

By the Book will be publishing in May, as well, though this is a YA romance as opposed to an adult one. This one also involves books in a fashion because I have a Type, apparently 😂 In this novel, Mary Porter-Malcolm compiles a list of bookish bad boy traits to avoid in real life men after someone at her school almost gets her heart broken by a cad. Unfortunately, Mary also starts to fall for a boy that displays all of these traits. I’m here for all the literary references in my romance!

#4. Well Played by Jen DeLuca

I’M SO EXCITED FOR THIS BOOK! I read Well Met earlier this year and absolutely loved! It was so much fun and the fact that it was set at a Renaissance Faire just spoke to my nerdy heart. Imagine my pleasure when I discovered it was the first in a series! Well Played will be published in September and it’s following Stacey, who was head wench in the first novel. I’m so ready to watch Stacey find love!

#5. Spoiler Alert by Olivia Dade

Not gonna lie, I added this to my TBR as soon as I saw the cover. I mean, look at it 😍 This follows the story of two nerds falling in love through their fandom. Except one of those nerds is a cosplayer who gains popularity after posting her plus-size take on a character and the other… is the star of the show from which the fandom spawned. It sounds like it’s gonna be so good! Spoiler Alert will be published in October and I cannot wait!

Do you have any RomComs on your TBR? Did you join in on #5OnMyTBR? Drop a link or let me know in the comments!

And, as always, happy reading!

Book Blogger Hop: Mar 20 – 26

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Crazy-For-Books and is currently being hosted by Coffee Addicted Writer. Every Friday, a new question is posted for book bloggers to answer in the coming week. The purpose of the hop is connection and community. You can discover new blogs to follow, new books to read, and you may end up with some new followers, as well!

This Week’s Question

This week’s prompt is submitted by Kri @ The Tired Buyer.

This is an awesome question!! And like five different answers popped into my head and were immediately scraped as soon as I read it.

Like scratch and sniff. I mean, if it were a book with a lot of tasty being described or a cookbook, that would be awesome. Other than that, though, I’m sure it could go very badly very quickly…

After sitting with this question for awhile, I think I have a much better answer:

Moving pictures!

Imagine it! You’re reading a high fantasy and our heroes are in the midst of taking on the Big Baddie. You’re deep into the action and you flip the page to find a two page spread of the battle scene. But it’s not just a picture… it plays like a movie, showing you the battle in action! I mean, we’d have to develop some Harry Potter-esque technology to make it a thing.

Or it could be an exclusive ebook feature, I guess.

Either way, that would be incredible! I feel like the reading experience would be that much more special. Of course, I’m a visual person. I love illustrations in books, anyways. Though I do enjoy picturing characters and settings in my head, I love when there is art for me to drool over, as well.

What interactive feature would you like to see in books? Let me know in the comments!

And, as always, happy reading!

WWW Wednesday: Mar 18, 2020

It’s time for another WWW Wednesday! This is a bookish meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words where bloggers answer the 3 Ws:

  1. What are you currently reading?
  2. What did you recently finish reading?
  3. What do you think you’ll read next?

If you’d like to learn more about any of these books, click on the cover to be taken to the Goodreads page.

Current Reads

Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko: I’ve only read the first couple of chapters of this book and I’m already in love! This is the story of a young girl named Tarisai who has grown up under the cold tutelage of her mother, The Lady. The Lady has a mission for Tarisai that sends her into a world where she can find the closeness that she craves. But her mysterious mother has a command for her that could ruin everything: kill the crown prince. This is an African inspired fantasy tale and, if the first few chapters are any indication, it’s going to magnificent!

Recently Finished

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The Chalk Man by C.J. Tudor: This book was so creepy and twisty and good! It’s not a perfect thriller, but it surprised me more than once. You can read my full review here.

The Last Human by Zack Jordan: I just finished this book and, my goodness, what a ride! I bounced through so many emotions while reading this book that I might need to sit with this one for awhile before I can write a coherent review. Was it good? Yes! Did it make me want to strangle the main character multiple times? …Also yes! Just… there’s a lot of complex emotions going on. Review to come!

What’s Next

Bonds of Brass by Emily Skrutskie: Currently, this is the only book I plan on picking up besides Raybearer. They are both April ARCs, so I want to focus on finishing them or at least getting a good chunk into them before we get too far into April. Especially since I have four other books to read in April for the Magical Readathon.

Also, I’ve been so hyped about this book for a long time, so I’m ready to dive in!

What are you reading this week? Finished any books recently that are your new favorites? Let me know in the comments!

And, as always, happy reading!
