Mini Reviews: Graphic Novel Edition

Mini Reviews

It’s time for another set of mini reviews! I’ve been sitting on this one for awhile, as I finished all the books I’ll be reviewing back in 2019. I just find it difficult to review graphic novels since they are so short! Still, I wanted to talk about these three graphic novels because each of them left me with such a happy feeling and really helped close out my reading year.

So, without further ado, let’s dive in!

Title: The Tea Dragon Society

Author/Illustrator: Katie O’Neill

Source: Borrowed (library)

Rating: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Links: Amazon::B&N::TBD::Indiebound

Of the three graphic novels I read, this one was the most adorable. And it’s solely because of the TINY, BABY DRAGONS!! They are so stinkin’ cute ๐Ÿ’•

Other than the adorable artwork, the story was quite enjoyable, as well. This is the story of Greta, who saves a tiny dragon from roaming dogs and ends up joining a long defunct society. It’s so interesting learning about not only the dragons, but the world in which both they and Greta live. I also love the incredible diversity that is such an easy part of the story. I think my only gripe with this book is that it’s soooo shooooort! I wanted more! Thankfully, The Tea Dragon Festival, the sequel, is already out there in the world so I can jump back in anytime I want.

Title: Pumpkinheads

Author: Rainbow Rowell

Illustrator: Faith Erin Hicks

Source: Borrowed (library)

Rating: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Links: Amazon::B&N::TBD::Indiebound

I read this in December, but I felt like I was smack in the middle of spooky season. This is one of those graphic novels that just pulls you into the setting with the gorgeous art and the storytelling. I felt like I was hanging out at the pumpkin patch with Deja and Josiah. This story follows Deja and Josiah on their last day working at the local pumpkin patch. They have worked there every year, but this is not only their last day, but their last year there, as they’ll both be off to college soon. So Deja has decided to help Josiah do the one thing he’s never done at the pumpkin patch: talk to his long-time crush.

I will say that, solely from looking at the cover, I guessed how this book was going to end. And, yet, that didn’t detract from my enjoyment at all! I may have known what was waiting at the end, but the ride was so damn enjoyable that I didn’t care! I absolutely adored this graphic novel! The art was A+, the story was so dang cute, and the ending made my heart go pitter-pat.

I am a huge sap, though, soooooo… ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ I thought this was a beautiful story with beautiful art to match!

Title: The Prince and the Dressmaker

Author/Illustrator: Jen Wang

Source: Borrowed (library)

Rating: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Links: Amazon::B&N::TBD::Indiebound

This was the last book I read in 2019 and, can I just say, what a way to end out the year!

This is the story of a young seamstress named Frances, who dreams of her skills being adored by the masses. She ends up in the employ of Prince Sebastian, who sometimes wears dresses and loves Frances’ style. Together, they take the Paris fashion scene by storm, but how can Frances and her creations be recognized when no one can know who she is or who she works for?

Uuuuugh, this book hurt me and brought me joy in equal amounts. It was so beautiful! And I’m not just talking about the art, though the art is just *chef’s kiss* This was a touching story about trying to be accepted for who you are. There are definitely rough parts of this story that made me ache, but it is overall a wonderfully hopeful tale. And I recently found out that it’s going to be a movie and I am very excited!

Have you read any of these graphic novels? Do you have any suggestions for ones I should pick up? Let me know in the comments!

And, as always, happy reading!

This Week’s Question

Hahahaha, just my whole dang life?

Just kidding! I think the first time I truly hit me that I was what would be considered a bookworm was in fourth grade. My teacher would give me additional books to read after I would finish whatever book we were reading for class. She knew I read fast (at least back then!) and didn’t want me to get bored. Reading was always my favorite thing to do at school and at home, though video games were a close second once we got a Sega Genesis.

I think what really brought it home, though, was that none of my friends liked to read as much as I did. In fact, they would actively try and get out of having to read. They would try and watch movies instead of reading the books or just ask me what happened, lol. It really struck me then that not everyone thought books were as magical as I did. Thankfully, the internet became a Thing and now I can find all the bookish people I could want to meet! I love the online bookish community ๐Ÿ’•

As for losing sleep over a novel… there are so many! One I distinctly remember, though, was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It was the last book. People had a field day spoiling others just for fun. So I was determined to read the whole book right after picking it up at a midnight release party.

Maaaan, I was exhausted the next day! Was it a smart idea? No. Would I do it again? Of course! Because that’s just the kind of person I am ๐Ÿ˜‚

What made you realize you were a bookworm? What was the last book you lost sleep over? Let me know in the comments!

WWW Wednesday: Mar 4, 2020

Itโ€™s time for another WWW Wednesday! This is a bookish meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words where bloggers answer the 3 Ws:

  1. What are you currently reading?
  2. What did you recently finish reading?
  3. What do you think youโ€™ll read next?

If youโ€™d like to learn more about any of these books, click on the cover to be taken to the Goodreads page.

Current Reads

The Last Human by Zack Jordan: I started on my second March ARC! So far, it’s definitely interesting. I’ve just started so there’s not much going on. There is, however, a ton of potential!

The Chalk Man by C.J. Tudor: I picked this book out for the Popsugar Reading Challenge prompt that requires you to pick the first book you touch on your bookshelf. Apparently, my subconscious thinks it has been far too long since I read a proper thriller. I’m really enjoying it so far!

Recently Finished

The Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu: Y’all, this book was beautiful. The descriptions! The emotions! The cover! Everything about this book was mesmerizing. I’m going to stop myself before I just ramble on for the next hour and point you towards my review if you’d like to know all my thoughts.

The Deep by Rivers Solomon: This is more of a 3.5 rounded up. I rarely give out half stars but this is one of those books that needs it. Because I’m confused about my feelings for this book, lol. It was excellent, but weird? I’m not sure… I’m still trying to wrap up my feelings so I can write my review. It’s definitely a powerful book, though.

What’s Next

Bonds of Brass by Emily Skrutskie: This is one of my most anticipated books of 2020 and I was just approved for an ARC on Netgalley! I was browsing Netgalley when I really shouldn’t be…

Ya know, as one does…

And I spotted this beauty available for request. I knew I shouldn’t cause I’m still catching up, but I figured I wouldn’t get approved anyway. And then, BAM, I got the email saying it was ready for download! I’m so excited to get started on this one ๐Ÿ˜

Top Ten Tuesday: Books With Single-Word Titles

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday was created byย The Broke and the Bookishย back in June 2010. It is currently hosted byย That Artsy Reader Girlย and, as is stated on the blog, it was โ€œborn of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.โ€

Happy Tuesday, everyone! It’s time for another TTT and our theme for this week is single-word titles. I feel like titles are getting longer and longer these days. Which was kinda confirmed when I was going through my read books on Goodreads and was having a TIME trying to find single-word titles! Still, I’ve rounded up ten of my favorites to share with you. Enjoy!

If youโ€™d like to learn more about any of these books, simply click on the cover to go to the Goodreads page.

  • Becoming by Michelle Obama
  • SLAY by Brittney Morris
  • Dracula by Bram Stoker
  • Uprooted by Naomi Novik
  • Coraline by Neil Gaiman
  • Cinder by Marissa Meyer
  • Artemis by Andy Weir
  • Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
  • Circe by Madeline Miller
  • Carrie by Stephen King

I have quite a mix in there, but they were all four or five star reads. These are some of my favorite books, both new and old!

February 2020 Wrap Up

The shortest month of the year has come and gone! Though it felt like February flew by, I’m happy to be one month closer to Spring! And though I didn’t read as many books as I did in January, this was a great month for wonderful reads. I didn’t rate anything read below a four star and I read my second five star book of the year. Kicking 2020 off right!

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s jump into the wrap up ๐Ÿ˜Š

This Week’s Question

Ohh, interesting question! I’m not one who follows books that I don’t care to read. I have so many books that I’m desperately waiting to read and all my bookish energy goes to them, lol.

That being said, there are a few books that I’ve heard of just from being a part of the book community that I genuinely have ZERO interest in. Like Crescent City by Sarah J. Maas and Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare. I haven’t read any of these authors’ books and they aren’t really on my radar for anytime in the near future. I don’t know why, I’m just… not interested. But it’s not like I’m actively avoiding these books.

I just don’t care ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

Are there any books you are NOT looking forward to? Should I try and give SJM and Cassandra Clare a go? Let me know in the comments!

book tag

TBR Book Tag

TBR Book Tag

While reading through various blogs, I stumbled upon this tag over at A Journey of Words. Though I’m not one to typically build monthly TBRs, I still have quite an extensive list of books I want to read! Besides, I thought the questions were intriguing, so why not give it a whirl?

With that said, let’s dive in!

How do you keep track of your TBR pile?

Currently, I have an entire bookshelf in my bedroom dedicated to all my unread books! I’ve been meaning to focus on reading those books this year, though this past month has been filled with library books… oops. Still, it’s nice to have all my unread books in one spot.

Other than that, I have a Goodreads shelf dedicated to books I want to read. That shelf is much more full than my physical bookshelf, heh. I just want to read all the books, ya’ll.

Is your TBR mostly print or e-books?

Currently it is mostly print books. I tend to enjoy reading physical books more than e-books, so they make up more of my owned books. I do have a growing collection of e-books, though, and most of my ARCs are in e-book format. And I have a small Audible collection, as well. I just have books everywhere, lol.

A book thatโ€™s been on your TBR list the longest?

It used to be The Count of Monte Cristo but I finally finished that book last year! So now the one that has been there the longest would probably beeeee…

Are we seeing a trend? Most of the oldest books on my TBR are classics and ya girl has a tense relationship with classics. I did end up loving The Count of Monte Cristo, though, so perhaps it’s time to suck it up and finally read Les Mis. I mean, it’s only been on my TBR since *peeks* 2011?!

Yikes…

A book you recently added to your TBR?

I literally just added this book to my TBR yesterday! The author, Alix E. Harrow, posted the cover reveal on Twitter and… I mean… look at it! How could I not add it?! Also, I adored the author’s first book, The Ten Thousand Doors of January, and this book is about witches. I just want it now, please.

A book in your TBR strictly because of its beautiful cover?

Like, all of them?

Hmm… what is the most recent book I picked just because of the cover? Let’s go with…

I distinctly remember seeing the cover of this book, not knowing a single thing about it, and thinking, “I must read this.” I LOVE this cover! And I own the book! But still haven’t read it because of who I am as a person!

Sigh…

Still, since randomly buying it because pretty, I have actually learned more about the book and I’m excited to actually read it!

A book on your TBR that you never plan on reading?

Well, the whole point of a TBR is that they are books I’m planning on reading at some point in time. I don’t think there are any books on my TBR that I’m actively planning on not reading. That being said, I’m sure there are quite a few books on my TBR that I won’t manage to get to in my lifetime. And, if I’m being honest with myself, one of the classics would be most likely to be forgotten.

An unpublished book on your TBR that youโ€™re excited for?

I just… really need this book. I need to know how Fie’s story ends. I need to know what’s up with that title! That title has me W O R R I E D.

A book on your TBR that basically everyoneโ€™s read but you?

I feel like everyone has read this book but me, heh ๐Ÿ˜… It is definitely on my soon-to-read list. It’s currently chilling on my physical TBR bookshelf, judging me for ignoring it for so long. I just know I’m going to love this book, but I kept skipping it for shiny new releases. Mayhaps I’ll finally get to it in March.

A book on your TBR that everyone recommends to you?

This was the book I heard the most about last year. Quite a few of the Booktubers I watched loved this, it was all over book Twitter… it was freakin’ everywhere! I found myself falling for the hype. So now it’s hanging out on my TBR bookshelf, waiting to be picked up. With as well as my recent foray into adult romances went, I’ll probably be reading this sooner than later.

A book on your TBR that youโ€™re dying to read?

*grabby hands* GIMMIE!

…Please?

Seriously, though, I’m so excited to read this book. The cover! Harrow! More weird necromancy sh*t! My body is ready.

How many books are on your Goodreads shelf?

Hahahahahahaha, do we have to talk about it…?

Yes?

….Fine. It’s *cough*539*cough*

I have a problem, okay?

How many books are on your TBR? What are you most excited to read? Let me know in the comments! Feel free to snag this tag if you enjoyed it! I’d love to see your answers, so drop me a link if you decide to join the fun.

Current Reads

The Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu: I won an ARC of this from BookishFirst after reading an excerpt. I’m enjoying the rest of the book as much as I enjoyed that small taste! This is the story of a young woman named Nannerl Mozart and her soon to be well known brother, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Both Nannerl and Wolfgang are musically talented, but she is still a young girl in eighteenth century Europe. She makes a wish to not be forgotten, a wish that is heard by a faerie princeling in a magical kingdom. This is part historical fiction, part fairytale and I’m absolutely loving it!

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Tuesday Mooney Talks to Ghosts by Kate Racculia: Ya’ll, I looooooved this dark, weird, funky book! It centers around a treasure hunt that is heavily influenced by the works of Edgar Allan Poe. It’s an amazing ride and I’m so glad I stumbled upon the synopsis on Goodreads. You can read my full review here.

What’s Next

The Last Human by Zack Jordan: My other March ARC that I want to read before it’s release date. This is a sci-fi that I talked about on my last WWW Wednesday and I’m excited to read it! Probably won’t be finishing it before the end of this month, but I’ll definitely have it done before the release date on March 24th.

The Deep by Rivers Solomon: I’ve been meaning to read this for MONTHS! It’s so short, I really have no excuse for why I’ve put this off for so long. So I’m picking it up next! No excuses!
