May 2021 Wrap Up

Hello, reader!

Somehow, we have already made it through May and my mind is legitimately boggled. Like, how is it already June?! Of course, I’m a happy girl because summer is when I โœจthriveโœจ! I’m a creature of sun and warmth, so summer is my favorite. But, before we go full force into the summer vibes, I still need to wrap up our last full month of spring.

May was a month where I read quite a bit, but wasn’t as into the books I managed to read. It wasn’t like anything was particularly bad, but I could feel a reading slump gnawing at the edges of my consciousness and I think that affected my reading enjoyment. Still, I managed to read 11 books last month and I’m astonished about that! That’s impressive when I was starting to feel slumpy.

But enough rambling for now. Let’s see what I managed to read in the month of May!

Book: The Two Towers by J.R.R. Tolkien

Rating: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Thoughts: I finally made it all the way through the second book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy! This was the book that stopped me from completing it years ago because I could not get over the long, drawn out descriptions. Something about listening to it on audio, though, made it vastly more enjoyable. I will say, I didn’t enjoy it as much as Fellowship of the Ring but it was still a good time.

Book: The Gallery of Wonders by Marc Remus

Rating: โ˜…โ˜…

Thoughts: Sigh… this book had so much potential. It’s a story that follows a young girl and her friends who get sucked into a magical painting. They get to attend a school that teaches you how to wield magic paintbrushes and it’s all super fantastical. Unfortunately, it’s also basically Harry Potter, but make it about painting. Seriously, the comparisons where vast and, after awhile, it took me right out of the story. The writing was also stilted and just… not it. I’m sad cause it sounded so good!

Book: Things to Do Before the End of the World by Emily Barr

Rating: โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Thoughts: I read this book for a blog tour hosted by The Write Reads and, quite honestly, I had no idea what I was going into when I picked it up ๐Ÿ˜‚ It was categorized as a thriller, though lots of people where calling it a contemporary, so I went in with an open mind. I found myself really enjoying following our main characters journey as she came into her own while the world was literally dying around her. You can read my full review here!

Blog Tour: Oathbreaker by A.J. Rettger

Hello, reader!

Itโ€™s my stop on another Storytellers On Tour blog tour today. Iโ€™m excited to talk to you about a fantasy novel that captured my attention called Oathbreaker by A.J. Rettger! This book features knights, elves, and a heaping helping of intrigue.

Before I continue, I want to thank the wonderful folks at Storytellers On Tour and the author for providing me with a free e-book in exchange for my participation with this tour! I always appreciate being able to help promote books and thatโ€™s especially true for indie authors. Also, if you’d like to visit any of the other stops on this fabulous tour, click the banner below to go to the tour schedule:

Now, letโ€™s get to the post! Oh, and keep reading til the end for a surprise!

Synopsis

“For thousands of years, elves and non-humans alike had lived freely until humans colonized their land and forced them into hiding and subjugation. After years of living as slaves or second-class citizens, the elves rebelled, but their uprising failed, and humans remained victorious.

Mario Deschamps, a new graduate of the Knightโ€™s College, sets off to complete his first deed, an accomplishment that will grant him knighthood and into the ordo equestris. But he has huge boots to fill. His late father, a famous knight and considered the Scourge of Bandits, single-handedly ended the Elven Uprising. Marioโ€™s youthful confidence, vanity, and naivety donโ€™t get him far in the real world, and he quickly finds himself trapped in a political climate where tensions are on the rise and war is inevitable.

In a world filled with monsters, outlaws, bounty hunters, demons, and murderous bandits, Mario is forced to make tough moral decisions. In a world fuelled by violence, hate, and bigotry, things are not as clear cut as he once thought. Lines have been drawn, but to complete his task, he must cross them all. With every choice, the consequences weigh greatly on him, leaving him full of guilt and doubting his path . . . and all the while, in the darkness, someone-or something-is waiting for him to break . . ..

A.J. Rettger weaves an epic tale of politics and prejudice, war and depravity, and legacy and destiny in his action-packed debut fantasy Oathbreakerโ€ฆ.”

First Lines Friday #9

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?  If you want to make your own post, feel free to use or edit the banner above, and follow the rules below:

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but donโ€™t give anything else about the book away just yet โ€“ you need to hook the reader first
  • Finallyโ€ฆ reveal the book!

If youโ€™re using Twitter, donโ€™t forget to use #FirstLinesFridays!

Hello, reader!

We’ve arrived at another Friday and I, for one, am super excited! This probably has a lot to do with the fact that, as of 3:30 pm EST, I will be on vacation! I’m looking forward to a week of relaxation and hanging out with the family. Before I go into full relaxation-mode, though, it’s time for First Lines Friday. Today’s selection is something I recently picked up to try and tackle my Netgalley backlist. I’m loving it so far and I think the opening lines will definitely capture your attention! Let’s see if you can guess what book I’m talking about from just a few lines and a couple of hints.

The Line(s):

“Today he would become a god. His mother had told him so.
‘Drink this,’ she said, handing him a cup. The cup was long and thin and filled with a pale creamy liquid. When he sniffed it, he smelled the orange flowers that grew in looping tendrils outside his window, the ones with the honey centers. But he also smelled the earthy sweetness of the bell-shaped flowers she cultivated in her courtyard garden, the one he was never allowed to play in. And he knew there were thinks he could not smell in the drink, secret things, things that came from the bag his mother wore around her neck, that whitened the tips of her fingers and his own tongue.”

The Hints:

This is an adult fantasy that features multiple POVs.

The color of the cover and part of the title share a name.

The author has previously written both young adult and middle grade novels.

The Reveal:

Click the cover to be taken to the Goodreads page

Goodreads Synopsis

The first book in theย Between Earth and Skyย trilogy, inspired by the civilizations of the Pre-Columbian Americas and woven into a tale of celestial prophecies, political intrigue, and forbidden magic.

A god will return
When the earth and sky converge
Under the black sun

In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial event proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world.

Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a manโ€™s mind. Her ship carries one passenger. Described as harmless, the passenger, Serapio, is a young man, blind, scarred, and cloaked in destiny. As Xiala well knows, when a man is described as harmless, he usually ends up being a villain.”

As I mentioned, I’ve already started reading this book in an effort to knock some novels off of my Netgalley backlist. I’m so glad I requested it because I’m absolutely loving this story! There are certain POVs I prefer more than others (Xiala has my whole heart) but this has been thoroughly enjoyable, so far, and I can’t wait to continue!

Did those first few lines capture your attention? Did they make you want to read the rest of the story? Let me know in the comments!

And, as always, happy reading!

Hello, reader!

It’s my stop today for the blog tour of the winner of BBNYA 2020! We’ve finally gotten around to the book that nabbed the number one spot: The Lore of Prometheus by Graham Austin-King. Synopsis

“John Carver has three rules: Don’t drink in the daytime, don’t gamble when the luck has gone, and don’t talk to the dead people who come to visit.

It has been almost five years since the incident in Kabul. Since the magic stirred within him and the stories began. Fleeing the army, running from the whispers, the guilt, and the fear he was losing his mind, Carver fell into addiction, dragging himself through life one day at a time.

Desperation has pulled him back to Afghanistan, back to the heat, the dust, and the truth he worked so hard to avoid. But there are others, obsessed with power and forbidden magics, who will stop at nothing to learn the truth of his gifts. Abducted and chained, Carver must break more than his own rules if he is to harness this power and survive.”

Blog Tour: Fid’s Crusade by David H. Reiss

Hello, reader!

Look at me posting three days in a row. And with three blog tours no less! I will admit that I’m most excited about this one as I’ll be talking about my favorite book I read as a BBNYA panelist in 2020. It’s a superhero story that focuses on a supervillain who isn’t all he seems to be. I’m talking about Fid’s Crusade by David H. Reiss! Goodreads Synopsis

“Sixteen-year-old Deka lives in fear and anticipation of the blood ceremony that will determine whether she will become a member of her village. Already different from everyone else because of her unnatural intuition, Deka prays for red blood so she can finally feel like she belongs.

But on the day of the ceremony, her blood runs gold, the color of impurity–and Deka knows she will face a consequence worse than death.

Then a mysterious woman comes to her with a choice: stay in the village and submit to her fate, or leave to fight for the emperor in an army of girls just like her. They are called alaki–near-immortals with rare gifts. And they are the only ones who can stop the empire’s greatest threat.

Knowing the dangers that lie ahead yet yearning for acceptance, Deka decides to leave the only life she’s ever known. But as she journeys to the capital to train for the biggest battle of her life, she will discover that the great walled city holds many surprises. Nothing and no one are quite what they seem to be–not even Deka herself.”

Just look at this beauty! I can’t wait to finally crack it open and read what I’ve heard so many people rave about.

Synopsis

“In the Blue, the worldโ€™s last city, all is not well.

Julia is stuck within its walls. She serves the nobility from a distance until she meets Lucas, a boy who believes in fairytales that Juliaโ€™s world canโ€™t accommodate. The Blue is her prison, not her castle, and sheโ€™d escape into the trees if she didnโ€™t know that contamination and death awaited humanity outside.

But not everyone in the Blue is human, and not everyone can be contained.

Beyond the cityโ€™s boundaries, in the wild forests of the Red, Cameron has precious little humanity left to lose. As he searches for a lost queen, he finds an enemy rising that he thought long dead. An enemy that the humans have forgotten how to fight.

One way or another, the walls of the Blue are coming down. The only question is what side youโ€™ll be on when they do.”
