Goodreads Monday

Goodreads Monday is a weekly meme that was started by Lauren’s Page Turners and I stumbled across on The Pine-Scented Chronicles. It’s a simple task to start your week: simply pick a random book from your Goodreads TBR and explain why you want to read it. Easy!

This Week’s Book

Descendant of the Crane by Joan He

Goodreads Synopsis:

Tyrants cut out hearts. Rulers sacrifice their own.

Princess Hesina of Yan has always been eager to shirk the responsibilities of the crown, but when her beloved father is murdered, sheโ€™s thrust into power, suddenly the queen of an unstable kingdom. Determined to find her fatherโ€™s killer, Hesina does something desperate: she engages the aid of a soothsayerโ€”a treasonous act, punishable by death… because in Yan, magic was outlawed centuries ago.

Using the information illicitly provided by the sooth, and uncertain if she can trust even her family, Hesina turns to Akiraโ€”a brilliant investigator whoโ€™s also a convicted criminal with secrets of his own. With the future of her kingdom at stake, can Hesina find justice for her father? Or will the cost be too high?

In this shimmering Chinese-inspired fantasy, debut author Joan He introduces a determined and vulnerable young heroine struggling to do right in a world brimming with deception.

Why I Want To Read It:

I’m gonna be honest, the reason I wanted to read this originally was because the first Booktuber I ever started watching, Sassenach the Book Wizard, would not stop talking about this book! She raved about it and declared more people needed to read it so that the author would write a sequel. When someone loves a book so much that they are begging for a sequel, it definitely piques my interest.

That’s not to say that I didn’t find the premise interesting, of course! Political intrigue in fantasy settings is one of my favorite things! The fact that it was Chinese-inspired had me even more intrigued. And there is a strong female lead coming into her own as a young woman (and new empress)? Yes, please!

I’ve also been wanting to fit more Asian influenced stories and Asian authors on my TBR. I know I read a LOT of white authors and that’s not saying that I should stop, but I definitely need to be more conscientious of reading diverse books. I’ve already discovered a few amazing reads by diverse authors that I would’ve missed out on if I hadn’t been consciously trying to pick up books by POCs.

Now I just need to get off my butt and actually read this book!

Itโ€™s time for another WWW Wednesday! This is a bookish meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words where bloggers answer the 3 Ws:

  2. What did you recently finish reading?
  3. What do you think youโ€™ll read next?

Current Reads

After the Flood by Kassandra Montag: I picked this book after Jesse @ Bowties and Books gushed about it on their channel. It sounded like it was going to be an intense ride and, so far, it is definitely delivering on the intensity! I’m really enjoying the plot and the writing is engaging af. I’m excited to continue!

Recently Finished

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The Tenant by Katrine Engberg: Well, this was an alright mystery/crime novel and that’s about it *shrug* It had a great premise, but the execution left me feeling a bit meh. You can read my review here.

Come Tumbling Down by Seanan McGuire: The fifth book in the Wayward Children series did NOT disappoint! I absolutely loved getting to see Jack and Jill again in their creepy world. You can read my review here.

American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins: This book was a pile of problems and not just because of the terrible promotion that tried to make people believe it was own voices. There is so much going on with this book that it’s taking me awhile to wrap my head around it so I can write a review. But it is an ARC, so a review is forthcoming!

Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert: UGH, I loved this! It was adorable and sexy and heartbreaking and I can’t wait to read the next Brown Sisters book! There will be a review soon.

What’s Next

Tuesday Mooney Talks to Ghosts by Kate Racculia: I talked about this book a little bit in my Top Ten Tuesday post yesterday. I’m incredibly excited to read this! It’s also due back to the library soon, which seems to be my motivation for picking my next reads these past few months, lol.

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren: My last library romance pick and it’s the one that made me want to give adult romances a try in the first place. I’ve just heard about it (and the authors) EVERYWHERE and I want to know what’s with all the hype. Yes, I can be made to read a book simply because of hype. Also, shocker, it’s due back soon ๐Ÿ˜†

Top Ten Tuesday: My Five Star Predictions

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday was created byย The Broke and the Bookishย back in June 2010. It is currently hosted byย That Artsy Reader Girlย and, as is stated on the blog, it was โ€œborn of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.โ€

It’s another fresh week and time for another Top Ten Tuesday. This week’s theme made me exam my TBR shelf with one question in mind: Which of these books will end up being my favorites? I’m not one to throw out five stars, though I do hand out four stars left and right. Actually finding ten books I thought I would love so much that they would get the coveted 5/5 took some time, but I think this list captures the ones I think have a fighting chance. Since I’m still learning my reading tastes, it will be interesting to see whether or not these predictions are correct.

But enough chit-chatting, let’s get to the list!

January 2020 Wrap Up

The first month of the year has come to a close. We are now solidly in the middle of winter and 31 days into the new year. Despite feeling like this month crawled by, I will say I am very happy with the reading I accomplished this past month! Last year, I wasn’t big on doing wrap ups, but I also wasn’t really tracking my reading beyond plugging it into Goodreads. This year, I have a reading journal, notebooks, and PLANS! Organization, FTW, y’all. So, without further ado, let’s see how my reading month shaped up.

Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Recent Book Covers

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday was created byย The Broke and the Bookishย back in June 2010. It is currently hosted byย That Artsy Reader Girlย and, as is stated on the blog, it was โ€œborn of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.โ€

Happy Tuesday, dear reader! It’s been awhile since I’ve done one of these, but when I saw it was a book cover freebie, I couldn’t resist! I’ve read quite a few books recently that had gorgeous covers. It makes me wonder if I’m just drawn to pretty books or the genres I typically read are upping their cover game. Either way, I thought I’d share my top ten favorite covers of books that I have recently read. Enjoy!

  1. Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire: I just love the dark, creepy vibe of this cover. It’s also my favorite of the Wayward Children’s series!
  2. The Merciful Crow by Margaret Owen: I just love the color scheme and the art of this cover! I honestly originally picked this up solely because of the cover. Thankfully, I ended up loving it.
  3. Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia: Another book that I picked up solely because of the cover. I mean, look at it! It’s absolutely gorgeous! The colors, the art, the whole aesthetic is just *chef’s kiss*
  4. Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir: I loved this entire book’s aesthetic. Honestly, it just fit the book so well. That aside, this cover just makes me drool. Gideon looking suitably badass and bones aplenty. It speaks to me.
  5. Wilder Girls by Rory Power: Yet another book that I picked up solely because of the cover. Sensing a theme with me? I can 100% be sold on a book if I find it pretty. I just love the art on this. It’s evocative and creepy and it makes you want to know what’s inside.
  6. A Heart so Fierce and Broken by Brigid Kemmerer: I mean… just look at it! It helps that green is my second favorite color. It’s so pretty…
  7. The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow: I don’t usually go for flowery covers, but this cover just slapped me in the face in the best of ways! It’s eye-catching and stunning and I just want to stare at forever.
  8. The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern: I do love a cover with symbolism. Everything on this cover is a hint to things found within the book and I adore it. It’s also beautifully understated.
  9. SLAY by Brittney Morris: This is probably my favorite one on the list. I love the colors. I love that it features a beautiful, geeky, black young woman. I love the effects. And, not gonna lie, the naked hardcover is beautiful!
  10. Come Tumbling Down by Seanan McGuire: Yup, another Wayward Children book, but look at it! The lightning! The door! It makes me think of a horror movie, which makes sense when you think of the content of this book. It’s deliciously weird and I love it!
