Blog Tour: Harrow Lake by Kat Ellis

Hello, reader!

There’s an aspect of myself that I haven’t talked about much on my blog: I’m a huge fan of horror movies. I grew up watching them and have longed held a love for all things creepy. Of course that means when I started expanding my reading tastes beyond fantasy, horror was one of the first ones I picked up. I’m slowly making my way through Stephen King’s vast amount of novels and I generally think the creepier the better! So, when Dave @TheWriteReads asked if I wanted to be part of a blog tour for a horror book that centered around a fake horror movie, I jumped at the chance!

Today, I will be one of the stops on said blog tour. I want to thank @TheWriteReads for working so hard to put this all together! I would also like to thank the publisher, Penguin Books, for providing an e-ARC through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. It is all very much appreciated!

Now, let’s dive in!

Synopsis

The must-have thriller of 2020 that will keep you gripped, keep you guessing and keep you up all night.

Welcome to Harrow Lake.

Someone’s expecting you.

Lola Nox is the daughter of a celebrated horror filmmaker – she thinks nothing can scare her.

But when her father is brutally attacked in their New York apartment, she’s swiftly packed off to live with a grandmother she’s never met in Harrow Lake, the eerie town where her father’s most iconic horror movie was shot. The locals are weirdly obsessed with the film that put their town on the map – and then there are strange disappearances, which the police seem determined to explain away.

And there’s someone – or something – stalking her every move.

The more Lola discovers about the town, the more terrifying it becomes. Because Lola’s got secrets of her own. And if she can’t find a way out of Harrow Lake, they might just be the death of her . . .”

My Review

So I grew up on horror movies, right? I remember watching The Night of the Living Dead at a ridiculously inappropriate age and being terrified of zombies for years afterwards! I’ve watched a gambit of classics when I was young and, as I grew up, I found myself gravitating to the genre. And I found that I wasn’t scared as I had once been. No more hiding under blankets because I saw a mummy scooping some guy’s brains out with a coat hanger for this girl!

I say all this to really get to one point: I don’t scare easy.

Why do I bring this up? Because most people go into horror novels expecting to be scared! I’m sure you want to know if Harrow Lake delivered.

Well… sort of?

I will say that this book delivered on the creep factor. There’s something about an isolated, small town that’s only famous because a surreal horror movie was filmed there that lends itself to being utterly creepy. I think the author did a masterful job of instilling a deep sense of foreboding as we discover the town of Harrow Lake alongside our main character, Lola. The residents are strange, the town itself is on the verge of literal collapse, and the atmosphere is perfectly odd.

But, still, was I scared? Not even once. But I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing! Why? Because the entire time I was reading this, I felt like I was watching a campy horror movie. And I love campy horror movies! They aren’t necessarily the scariest, but they definitely are fun as hell. That’s how I felt about Harrow Lake. It was terrifying, but I had a blast reading it!

I think my favorite part of the whole book was Lola. She was such an interesting main character! She clearly had her own issues before being shipped off to the town where her famous father filmed his most iconic movie. I do love a book with an unreliable narrator, as well. I like to be kept on my toes as to whether or not I should take everything I’m being told with a grain of salt. It adds to the suspense for me, so I appreciated not knowing whether Lola’s POV was 100% trustworthy.

Also, like I said, the creep factor of this book is top notch! I’d imagine more so if you’re not a fan of bugs. I liked the weird backstory of the Big Baddie. I thought the strangeness of the town and the people who lived there was wonderfully written. The isolation and the hostility could almost be felt radiating from the pages! It all combined to give this book a certain chilliness that I appreciate in my horror in any format.

I will say, though, that I guessed pretty much every twist before it occurred. I think there was one twist I didn’t see coming and it was a minor one. But, again, I have watched a lot of horror movies and this book felt like a horror movie in paper form. Honestly, if it’s ever made into a movie, I would definitely watch it! So I can excuse a little predictability because it was still an engrossing ride.

Final thoughts: Though this was a bit predictable, it was a thrill to read and definitely delivered when it came to creepiness. If you’re looking for a dark story that reads kind of like a campy horror flick, you’re going to love Harrow Lake!

Book Blogger Hop: May 8 – 14

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created byย Crazy-For-Booksย and is currently being hosted byย Coffee Addicted Writer. This Week’s Question

This week’s prompt submitted byย Elizabeth @ย Silver’s Reviews.

I currently use one that seems to be a mainstay for a lot of bloggers: WordPress. I’m going to be honest, I didn’t really shop around the various different platforms before setting up my blog. I had heard of WordPress frequently, most of the blogs I already read were on WordPress, and I was constantly seeing ads for it everywhere! Once I finally got off my butt and decided to Do The Thing, WordPress was the first place I went.

Currently, I’m making do with the free version and I’m enjoying the experience, so far! But, again, I have absolutely nothing with which to compare it ๐Ÿ˜… I enjoy the ease of setting up blog posts and, if I have questions, I can typically find an answer pretty quickly from fellow bloggers. Because, again, just a TON of bloggers use WordPress and have been using it for a lot longer than I have.

Will I one day expand beyond this platform? Perhaps get a paid subscription? Or leave WordPress entirely? Who knows ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพโ€โ™€๏ธ But, for now, it works for me just fine!

Bookish Prediction Tag

Hello, reader!

I know what you’re thinking. Two bookish tags in one week?! How have we been blessed so?

Or… ya know… something along those lines ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Well, I was once again tagged by the lovely Danni @ _ForBooksSake and I couldn’t say no! Also, if you haven’t checked out Danni’s wonderful blog, please do. She posts great bookish content and is definitely worth a follow!

Next Read

In an attempt to keep up with my Netgalley titles, I’ll probably be picking this one up next. It comes out on June 2nd and I want to get a jump on it. Also, it’s billed as Les Misรฉrablesย meetsย Six of Crows and I am definitely here for that!

Next 5 Star Read

Does it count as a prediction if I’m currently reading the book? We’re going to say it does. I decided to check out Scribd and discovered the audiobook for The Poet X was available. I’ve been wanting to read this for ages and I had heard the audiobook was incredible. And, yup, it’s fucking amazing. I’m loving so far and I’m almost done and I don’t want it to be over ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Next 1 Star Read

I don’t typically pick up a book that I think I’m going to hate. The point of casual reading is to get some form of enjoyment out of it after all! So I’ve got nothing for this one.

Next Love Interest (or Character that Seems Really Cool to You)

From following the author on Twitter and listening to people who have read this already, I’m thinking that I’m really going to like the main character in Where Dreams Descend. Kallia sounds fierce and flamboyant, which I suppose you would need to be when you’re competing to be the headliner for a magical circus. I’m excited to read her story!

Next Book Youโ€™ll Be Buying

I mean… I technically already bought this, but it’s not out yet, so I’m counting it! I can’t wait for my book to get here. I am so hyped for this sapphic beauty! Also, that beautiful cover will soon be gracing my shelves and I can’t wait ๐Ÿ˜

Next Book That Will Leave You with a Book Hangover (and Desperately Wanting a Reread or Next in Series)

The Merciful Crow came out of left field and punched me in the face last year. And I loved it! So I’m ready for The Faithless Hawk, it’s sequel, to just wreck my entire life. It’s an immersive world and I know I’ll be lost for days after finishing it. But my body is ready!

Did you get a kick out of this post? Do you have your own bookish predictions? Then consider yourself tagged! I would love to see your answers ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

And, as always, happy reading!

Blog Tour: Disenchanted by Brianna Sugalski

Hello, reader!

Today, I am one of the stops on a blog tour for Disenchanted by Brianna Sugalski! The tour is being put on by Storytellers on Tour, which is a blog and bookstagram tour company that focuses on indie published fantasy and sci-fi. Which I think is pretty awesome! Thank you to Storytellers on Tour and the publisher for letting me come along for the ride.

But enough rambling about the tour… let’s talk about this book!

Synopsis

“A Breton princess at the peak of the French Renaissance, Lilac lives prisoner in her parents’ castle after a wicked secret is revealed on the eve of her tenth birthday soirรฉe. Years later, her coronation ceremony looms, and between the riotous townsfolk and scheming nobleman bent on snatching the throne, Lilac prepares for the worst… Until a mysterious letter arrives from The Witch of Lupine Grotto, detailing a curious offer to cure her darkness forever.

Lilac begrudgingly trades her coronet for a cloak and ventures into the forest Brocรฉliande in pursuit of the impious enchantress at the edge of town. With only the protection of an inherited daggerโ€”and unsolicited help of the sardonic stranger who inserts himself on her questโ€”she must traverse Brocรจliande and return in time to claim her rightful position as sovereign monarch.

This is the story of a cursed princess,
A crestfallen killer,
The town that wants them to burn,
And the witch that can save them both.”

My Review

“My point is, if you cannot live with the shard of darkness that rests within you, then tell me, princess… How will you live with all of mine?”

I have to be honest. Even after reading the synopsis for this book, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I love a dark fantasy, but I don’t think I’ve ever read a dark YA fantasy. It sounded intriguing, though, so I decided to give it a go.

Disenchanted is definitely not lacking in action! This was a fast-paced read, with the action starting from chapter one and keeping you in it’s grip until the very end. There was no point in this story that I felt like it was lagging or getting dull. I do enjoy a fantasy that can keep me interested throughout the entire story. This was expertly paced, which made it a very quick read.

I also enjoyed the development of both our main characters, Lilac and Garin. It was interesting to follow a heroine who wasn’t immediately a badass. Lilac is definitely fierce and bold when she is cornered, but you can tell she’s spent most of her life locked away in a castle. She makes some… dubious choices, but, you know what? It’s a little refreshing reading about a heroine that isn’t instantly perfect. Lilac is messy and has flaws and it makes her a nuanced character. I felt like I would have like to see her grow a little more throughout the book, but this is the first book of a series, so it kinda makes sense. Her arc is yet to be completed!

As for Garin, he was an interesting protagonist. Again, like Lilac, he has his issues and flaws that made him come alive on the page. He is kind of your typical, tortured bad boy, but there are little traits sprinkled into him that make him just that much more intriguing. I honestly wish we could have had more of his prospective in the story! Either way, I liked watching his development as I read this book.

The one thing I would say felt a little rushed to me was the romance. This is probably because I went into this expecting more fantasy than romance. The fantasy elements were fantastic, but the romance very quickly took over. It felt a little insta-lovey, which is not my favorite thing. Still, even with the insta-love, I thought the author did a beautiful job of twisting the heartstrings as we watched these two spiral towards one another.

I think my favorite thing about this book was the world-building. I loved all the myths and supernatural creatures that were woven throughout this book! And the creepy, atmospheric descriptions of the forest Brocรจliande were just… *chef’s kiss* The author has a way with beautifully wrought descriptions. It was so easy to picture the forest in my mind’s eye. I felt the closeness of the witch’s hut. Strong descriptions are something I always appreciate in my fantasy reads! It makes it so easy to get lost in the story.

Final thoughts: This was a dark, atmospheric fantasy book that will have you captivated from page one. The characters are interesting to follow and I really enjoyed watching their development. I was a little thrown off with how much romance was in this book, but I still enjoyed my reading experience.

The Quarantine Book Tag

Quarantine Book Tag

Hello, reader!

It’s been a bit since I’ve done a book tag, hasn’t it? Thankfully, the lovely Danni @ _ForBooksSake, recently tagged me for one! The Quarantine Book Tag was created over on Words About Words and it looks like fun! So let’s take a look at the rules and jump in.

Rules:

  • Pingback to the creators, @WordsAboutWordsย , so they can see all your answers.
  • Tag the person you found this from. (Thanks for the tag, @_ForBooksSake!)
  • Donโ€™t stress and have fun! (& also stay safe!)

#1. Favourite reading spot at home?

Propped up in my bed with a hot cocoa cooling on the bedside table. I always read before bed and it’s just become my go-to spot when I’m ready to get into a book.

#2. An unread book in your physical TBR?

Heh… *glances nervously at her bookshelf full of unread books*

Alright, let’s just pick one randomly. And the winner is…

Heh… ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜… One day I will actually finish this duology, I swear!!

#3. A book youโ€™veย actually readย from your physical TBR pile?

Haha, I feel called out ๐Ÿ˜‚ But, thankfully, I have a few to choose from since last month! I’ll just pick my favorite one.

My only five star read from last month and a graphic novel I think everyone should pick up. It’s just so good, I promise!

#4. Next book release youโ€™re hyped for?

This one is easy!

The Henna Wars is a sapphic rivals-to-lovers romance that I’ve been dying to read. It comes out next Tuesday (!!) so I don’t have much longer to wait! And I have it pre-ordered, so hopefully it will be here sooner than later ๐Ÿ˜

#5. Favourite bookish world to escape to?

The answer for this will probably be Harry Potter, lol. I was older when I read the books, but I can still vividly imagine myself riding the Hogwarts Express, hanging out with Nearly-Headless Nick, and spending all my money at Honeyduke’s! I love that world and it has a way of igniting the imagination. J.K. Rowling may be problematic af, but the world she created will always be one of my favorites.

#6. A bookish world you would NOT want to visit?

As much as I enjoyed Gideon the Ninth, the world where Gideon came from sounds… just awful. I don’t think I would want to visit the Ninth House at all. I mean, I loved the dark nature of this book, but I would most definitely die if I was dropped into Gideon’s universe, lol.

#7. Favourite author to follow on Twitter?

Oh man, so many… In fact, I made an entire Top Ten Tuesday post about it! We’ll pick one from that post and go with Margaret Owens. She’s the author of The Merciful Crow and her Tweets range from hilarious to very informational.

#8. A bookish craft youโ€™d like to try?

I am probably the least crafty person you will ever meet ๐Ÿ˜ฌ That being said, I’d love to try doing a bullet journal for my reading. Does that could as a bookish craft? Cause that’s all I’ve got, lol.

#9. Something youโ€™d like to practice/get better at?

I’ve always wanted to be able to draw. I’ve been wanting to try my hand at it/practice it to see if I could finally draw something beyond a stick figure. I just want to be able to draw all my favorite characters/scenes from books!

#10. How many times has your reading been interrupted by a family member/living mate?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚ Literally multiple times a day unless I hide in the bathroom. And that doesn’t even guarantee me some alone time.

#11. Have you bought a book since youโ€™ve been in quarantine? Which & from where? [No? Well, thereโ€™s still timeโ€ฆ]

I’m technically on a book buying ban, so I was trying so hard to be good… but I broke ๐Ÿ˜ฉ I mean, I’m not really sad about it. I honestly lasted longer than I thought I would. But someone linked Bookshop.org, which donates part of it’s proceeds to indie bookstores, and I couldn’t resist! I ended up buying four books:

#12. What TV shows/movies have you binged watched?

Honestly, I’m not a big TV/movie person. I don’t know what it is, but my attention span is not built for marathoning a show. We have been watching Tiger King, which is a trip. I’m a big fan of true crime shows, so that one is right up my alley. Other than that, I’ve watched some random Disney movies… ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿพโ€โ™€๏ธ

#13. What other media are you consuming?

I’ve been playing A LOT of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. My daughter asked for it for her birthday and I was curious. I had never played an Animal Crossing game, but everyone was losing their minds about it so I wanted to see what the hype was about. And now I’m hopelessly addicted, so there’s that!

#14. Favourite song to wash your hands to?

I usually just count to twenty seconds because, if I start singing a song, I’m gonna be washing my hands for the duration of that song, lol. We’ll just saaaaay…

(I haven’t even watched the show but this song is CONSTANTLY STUCK IN MY HEAD!)

Did you enjoy this post? Did you find the questions interesting? Then consider yourself tagged! I would love to see your answers!

April 2020 Wrap Up

April Wrap Up

Hello, reader!

It seems like it was just March and now it’s suddenly May. April went by in a blip! This was a busy month, settling into our new normal and trying to keep up with all the closures. And I definitely think my reading suffered. I’m an essential worker and it felt like I had even less time than usual to relax and read. And, when I could relax, reading just wasn’t keeping my attention. Still, I managed to get through five books this month and complete all the books on my O.W.L.s TBR! So, I’m feeling fairly accomplished!

Let’s take a look back at my reading month.

Highs/Lows

I decided to change the title of this section from “Best/Worst” since, just because I may not enjoy a book doesn’t make it the worst. So now I’m going to my top book of the month and my bottom book of the month. This month’s top was actually the last book I read in April, which was…

I had heard of this graphic novel before, but hadn’t picked it up until it fit one of my Magical Readathon prompts. I’m so glad I finally read it because I absolutely adored it! This was such a wonderful way to finish out my reading month. The art was gorgeous, the story made me feel a lot of feelings, and I can’t wait to read more from this author.

Now, my bottom book of the month was one that very nearly knocked me into a reading slump. If you read my O.W.L.s mini-review post, you’ll know the book I’m talking about is…

Now, as I said in my review, it’s not that I didn’t enjoy this book. When I could convince myself to pick it up, I really enjoyed the experience! But it felt like such a chore to read. It was just far too slow for my liking and probably could have benefited from being a tad shorter. Still, I did think it was a well-written book and definitely worth the read. As you can maybe tell, I had an odd relationship with this one ๐Ÿ˜…

Reflections

As I’m sure it was for many, April continued to be a strange month. I think the family and I are still adjusting to our new normal. I mentioned that my desire to read took a hit and I definitely think it has to do with… *vaguely gestures at everything*

With that being said, I’m still pretty happy with how my reading month turned out! I finished all of my O.W.L.s for the Magical Readathon, which sets me up rather well for the N.E.W.T.s later on this year. I read the same amount of books as I did in March, and, while there may have only been one five star read in April, I still enjoyed everything I picked up. I’ve never been the type of reader who can tear through over ten books in one month, though I definitely envy them! One day…

I think the thing that I’m most excited about, though, is how many challenge prompts I checked off! After a month where I didn’t tic off a single Book Riot challenge, I knocked off two! And I honestly could have made a couple more books fit some of the prompts if I was being generous with interpretation, lol. I’ve consistently been checking off Popsugar prompts, as well, as this month was no different. But the biggest thing is that I’m finally making a dent in my #StartOnMyShelfathon challenge! 3 out of the 5 books I read were books on my physical TBR. I’m hoping to keep that momentum going in May!

So what is the focus for May? Honestly, I have quite a few books/ARCs to read for blog tours/reviews this month. I don’t know how it happened, but here we are ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Of course, I’m incredibly excited to read all of them, else I wouldn’t have requested them! I’m also excited to get more involved in blog tours. It’s always something I’ve been interested in as a blogger and I’m happy to help promote new books! Especially with the current state of things in the publishing industry. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be for folks who are publishing books during this pandemic, whether they are a debut or an established authors.

And, perhaps, I’ll break out of my five-books-per-month reading trend! Fingers crossed ๐Ÿ˜‚

I hope April treated you well, reader! Did you read a new favorite book? Did you participate in any readathons or challenges? Let me know in the comments!

And, as always, happy reading!

One Sentence Synopsis

Kit Sweetly works as a wench at The Castle, a medieval themed restaurant which is distinctly patriarchal, but wants to fight as a knight and decides to make that happen.

Favorite Quote

This quote is from an uncorrected copy and may change in the final version

“Well, at first, I didn’t think I was going to be able to change or prove anything – I was just helping my brother out. But, as I was fighting, I realized I liked it. I wanted to show kids they can do anything, regardless of gender identity. So, yes, it might be symbolic. But what better way to smash the patriarchy than with a lance and sword?”

Mini Reviews: O.W.L.s

Hello, readers!

Welcome to the last day of April! And we all know what that means.

Well… yes… tomorrow is May. But, more importantly, it’s the end of the Magical Readathon! You can read my initial announcement post here. This year, I was set on completing O.W.L.s that would put me on track for my chosen magical career: Trader of Magical Tomes. That meant I needed to read four books to “test for” four different O.W.L.s: Ancient Runes, Charms, History of Magic, and Transfiguration. It was touch-and-go for half the month but, I am happy to report, I completed all of my O.W.L.s! And now I can try and string my thoughts together about each book I read. Let’s get to it!

Disenchanted by Brianna Sugalski: I’m about 20% into this book, but I’m enjoying it! I’m really liking the main character, Lilac. She’s pretty feisty and take charge, which I appreciate in my heroines. The setting is intriguing, as well. The pace seems a bit slow at the moment, but, again, I’m only 20% in! I’m excited to keep reading.

The Whisper Man by Alex North: Maaaaaan, this book messed me up! I thought I knew what was going on, but NOPE. This was a fun, freaky journey and I really enjoyed it. I also loved the look at a single father raising his son. It made me think back to my single parent days and I remember feeling a lot of the same feelings as Tom. It was a connection I wasn’t expecting to find in a thriller!

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson: I read this graphic novel in one night. I stayed up way too late reading it. I couldn’t stop once I started! This was so. damn. GOOD! The art was superb. The story was engaging and incredible. And there were SO MANY FEELINGS! The book is still chilling on my bedside table and I have to talk myself out of picking it up and re-reading it every night. SO. GOOD.

What’s Next

Harrow Lake by Kat Ellis: I’m part of The Write Reads blog tour for this beauty and I’m pumped to start it! I’m in a real thriller mood and this sounds like it’s going to be right up that alley. Also, I’m a lover of horror movie, so the premise of this book just sucked me in! I’ll be starting this one this weekend so I can be prepared for my tour date.

So what books are you reading this week? Finished any new favorites? Did you do your own WWW Wednesday post? Let me know in the comments!

And, as always, happy reading!
